Presque Isle Campground Introduce
For local residents of Ironwood, Michigan, and the surrounding Upper Peninsula region seeking an exceptional "camping near me" experience, Presque Isle Campground offers a fantastic opportunity to immerse yourselves in the natural beauty of the area. Located in Ironwood, MI 49938, USA, and accessible by phone at (800) 447-2757 or +1 800-447-2757, this campground is highlighted by its proximity to excellent hiking trails and stunning lake views. Based on visitor feedback, Presque Isle Campground serves as a convenient and scenic basecamp for exploring the wonders of the Upper Peninsula, including the renowned Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park, often referred to as "The Porkies."
When considering "camping near me," the environment surrounding Presque Isle Campground is a significant draw. The campground is praised as a "great place for hiking," with specific mention of the easily accessible and beautiful "river loop," making it suitable for hikers of all skill levels, including beginners. For those fortunate enough to secure a spot that "backs up to the lake," the opportunity to witness "breathtaking sunsets" adds a layer of natural beauty to the camping experience. While one review noted that the campground can feel "cramped in the middle spots," opting for a site on the "outer ring" appears to offer more space and privacy. The overall environment is characterized by the natural landscapes of the Upper Peninsula, including rivers, forests, and the picturesque Lake Superior, which contributes to the scenic appeal of the campground and the surrounding area. Visitors during mid-August reported pleasant temperatures in the 60s-70s with minimal rain and, surprisingly, a lack of the notorious UP black flies, though a moderate amount of mosquitoes was present, which is typical for the region during that time.
The services at Presque Isle Campground appear to be somewhat rustic, consistent with many state park campgrounds. The presence of "vault toilets" is noted, with one reviewer describing them as "average." It's important to be aware that the check-in station might have limited operating hours, as one visitor encountered it closed at 4 pm on a Thursday, preventing them from purchasing firewood upon arrival. This suggests that local users planning to arrive later in the day should consider bringing their own firewood or sourcing it before reaching the campground. While the number of pit toilets is limited to four for the entire campground, it is mentioned that "park rangers clean and stock daily." However, there was an issue reported with the emptying of these facilities, leading to potentially unpleasant conditions during the first couple of days of one visitor's stay. On a more positive note, "plenty of clean well water" is available, although it requires manual pumping. This indicates a reliable source of drinking water, but campers should be prepared for the manual effort required to access it. Given the nature of a state park campground, services like electrical hookups or laundry facilities are not mentioned and are less likely to be available compared to private campgrounds. Local users should plan accordingly for a more self-sufficient camping experience.
The features of Presque Isle Campground are primarily centered around its natural setting and access to outdoor activities. The highlight is undoubtedly the proximity to excellent hiking trails, including the beginner-friendly river loop. The potential for lakefront campsites with stunning sunset views is another significant feature. The campground's location also provides convenient access to the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park ("The Porkies"), recognized as one of the top state parks in the country, offering a vast expanse of wilderness to explore, including more challenging hiking trails, waterfalls, and old-growth forests. While the campground itself might feel cramped in certain areas, the outer ring sites offer more spaciousness. The availability of clean well water is a practical feature for campers. The mention of mosquitoes suggests that insect repellent is a necessary item to bring, especially during the summer months. For local users, the campground serves as an ideal base for exploring the natural attractions of the western Upper Peninsula, with easy access to both the immediate hiking trails and the broader wilderness of the Porkies. The overall experience seems to emphasize immersion in nature and outdoor recreation.
No specific promotional information for Presque Isle Campground was included in the provided reviews. As a state park campground, fees are typically charged per night, and reservations are often recommended, especially during peak seasons. Local residents might benefit from purchasing a Michigan State Parks Recreation Passport, which grants access to all state parks and recreation areas for a year. It would be advisable for local users interested in "camping near me" at Presque Isle Campground to visit the official Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) website or contact the park directly to inquire about current camping fees, reservation procedures, and the requirements for the Recreation Passport. Information about any seasonal specials or local resident discounts might also be available through these channels. Planning ahead and understanding the costs and reservation system will ensure a smooth and enjoyable camping experience.
In conclusion, Presque Isle Campground offers local residents of Ironwood and the surrounding areas a valuable "camping near me" opportunity to experience the natural beauty of the Upper Peninsula. Its standout features include easy access to scenic hiking trails, the potential for breathtaking lakefront sunset views, and its prime location as a gateway to the renowned Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park. While the campground offers basic amenities like vault toilets and manually pumped well water, and some areas might feel cramped, the overall experience is geared towards outdoor enthusiasts seeking immersion in nature. Local users should be prepared for a more rustic camping experience and plan accordingly for items like firewood and insect repellent. By checking the Michigan DNR website or contacting the campground directly for information on fees, reservations, and the Recreation Passport, local campers can make the most of their visit to Presque Isle Campground and the stunning natural wonders of the region.

Presque Isle Campground Reviews
Great place for hiking! The river loop is easy to access and beautiful for beginners like me. Vault toilets were average. FYI- The check-in station was closed at 4pm on Thursday, so we couldn’t buy firewood when we arrived. I recommend a spot that backs up to the lake, the sunsets are breathtaking!
Oct 07, 2020 · Dylan ThomasOverall, a 4.5 star camping experience for us here. We came in mid-Aug and while there was a moderate amount of mosquitoes, we didn't see a single one of the dreaded UP black flies. The temps were in the 60s-70s almost every day and it only rained once. The campground is cramped in the middle spots, but we had one on the outer ring so plenty of space. There are 4 pit toilets total which the park rangers clean and stock daily, but they are having a hard time emptying them right now (our first 2 days the level of excrement was only a few feet from the toilet🤢 - the park rangers said the guy they hire to empty the pit toilets is unreliable). Plenty of clean well water available, tho you have to manually pump it. The UP is a beautiful place and I definitely recommend camping here and exploring one of the top state parks in the country ("The Porkies").
Aug 19, 2023 · Yoni NiknamOne of the prettiest state campgrounds to stay in. The bathrooms were kept clean, sites were nice and plenty of trees around. The view of Lake Superior is always a bonus, too. The rainstorm rainstorm made for a cool color change in the lake from the river running in to it.
May 26, 2024 · Nick PoshThis review is for Presque Isle Campground Memorial Weekend 2022. Tented at site P141--were warned about bears roaming recently upon check-in. The campground is nice, quiet with big sites and lots of trees (be aware of the generator allowed sites vs not). It is WAY NICER than the main campground, Union Bay, which is 45 minutes away. Spend the day walking the whole Presque Isle River and waterfalls, lots of freaking stairs but worth it. ***If the dirt looks like it rained overnight and it didn't, it's no-see-ums, so beware if you're prone to bug bites*** (Photos are of the site and the view from the site.)
Mar 10, 2024 · Stephanie GarnPresque Isle Campground:This is a very nice rustic campground. The campsites are fairly spacious, larger than at most other campgrounds, and the campers are largely quiet. I heard / smelled two generators in the generator area of the campground when I was there (3 nights). The generator loop did seem to have larger groups of people making a bit more noise than the non-generator loop. The well water hand pump is a good hundred yards walk off the campground loop road, so you may want to bring a full jug of water with you. The pit toilets are well-ventilated and do not smell; you won’t smell them at an adjacent campsite. On some days there is a pretty stiff wind coming off the lake, so you may want to consider that when positioning your camper and putting up an awning. There is a nice stairway down to Lake Superior at the north end of the campground. They take only cash (no cards) for camping fees and firewood, so be ready for that. The nearest cell phone signal is about 10 miles south on Presque Isle Road/M-519, so be sure to download any maps, e-books, trail descriptions, or geocaches before you lose a signal.
