Porcupine Mountains Presque Isle-Rustic Introduce
If you're searching for "camping near me" and crave a rustic outdoor experience amidst breathtaking natural beauty, Porcupine Mountains Presque Isle-Rustic campground, located at 33303 Headquarters Rd, Ontonagon, MI 49953, USA, is a destination worth considering. You can reach them at (906) 885-5275 or +1 906-885-5275 to inquire about availability and plan your visit to this unique part of Michigan's Upper Peninsula.
The Presque Isle-Rustic campground is situated within the expansive and stunning Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park. This location provides unparalleled access to a variety of natural attractions, most notably its numerous waterfalls and the shores of Lake Superior. For those who appreciate the raw beauty of nature and are comfortable with a more rustic camping setup, this campground offers a gateway to an unforgettable outdoor adventure.
One of the primary highlights of the Presque Isle area is its collection of picturesque waterfalls. While reaching these natural wonders requires navigating many stairs, the reward of witnessing their beauty is consistently mentioned as being well worth the effort. The presence of multiple waterfalls within the vicinity of the campground offers ample opportunities for exploration and photography. Additionally, a "cool bridge" is noted as part of the scenic trails, adding to the charm and accessibility of the area.
Beyond the waterfalls, the campground provides access to the mouth of the Presque Isle River, where visitors can enjoy fishing. Hiking trails lead to this area, allowing campers to combine a scenic walk with the opportunity to cast a line. This confluence of river and wilderness offers a tranquil setting for relaxation and angling.
Another significant feature of the Presque Isle-Rustic campground is its proximity to Lake Superior. Stairs from the campground lead directly to the rocky shoreline of the lake, providing a front-row seat to spectacular sunsets right over the water. The experience of sitting on the rocks and watching the sun dip below the horizon is described as "amazing," highlighting the visual splendor that this location offers.
In terms of facilities, the campground is described as rustic, implying basic amenities. Reviews mention the presence of outhouses, which are reported to be clean and well-maintained. One reviewer specifically noted a staff member sanitizing door handles and toilets, indicating a commitment to hygiene even in a rustic setting. A water pump is also available within the campground, providing a source of potable water for campers.
It's important for potential visitors to be aware of the campsite layout. One review mentions that campsites were "practically on top of each other" with "no privacy or trees" in the specific area where they stayed. However, they also noted that many reserved "good spots" remained empty. This suggests that the level of privacy and the character of individual campsites may vary within the campground, and booking in advance might be advisable to secure a more desirable location if privacy is a priority. It also underscores the popularity of the campground, as they secured the last available spot on a Sunday afternoon.
Another crucial piece of information for planning a trip to Porcupine Mountains Presque Isle-Rustic is its location relative to other key areas within the state park. One reviewer pointed out that the campground is situated 30 miles through the park from the park headquarters and the popular Lake of the Clouds. This distance should be factored into travel plans, especially for those intending to explore other parts of the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park. The drive itself through the park is likely scenic but requires adequate time.
The overall sentiment from visitors is positive, with the park being described as "beautiful" and the campground as "quiet" with "great trails/boardwalks" leading to the waterfalls and the lake. This suggests that despite the rustic nature of the camping and potential lack of privacy in some areas, the natural beauty and recreational opportunities of the location are the primary draws and create a rewarding experience for those who visit.
For local users seeking a "camping near me" experience that prioritizes immersion in nature, access to stunning waterfalls and Lake Superior, and a network of hiking trails, Porcupine Mountains Presque Isle-Rustic offers a compelling option. While the amenities are basic and campsite privacy may vary, the opportunity to witness breathtaking scenery, hike through a beautiful wilderness, and enjoy the tranquility of a lakeside setting makes this campground a unique destination within the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park. Be sure to consider the distance to other park attractions and the potential for crowded conditions, especially during peak season, and perhaps call ahead to inquire about specific campsite characteristics to ensure a stay that meets your preferences.

Porcupine Mountains Presque Isle-Rustic Reviews
We rolled in on a Sunday afternoon and got the last spot. Campsites practically on top of each other, no privacy or trees. Alot of people with reservations, never showed up, so the good spots were empty. I can saw the waterfalls made it worth it! There are few there and many, many stairs to get to them, also a cool bridge. You can also hike to the river mouth and fish. There are also stairs that lead right to the lake, you can sit on the rocks and watch the sunset right off the water, its amazing!! Out houses were clean and the girl was sanitizing the door handles and toilets!! There is a water pump.
Jul 27, 2022 · Maria MariaThis park was beautiful! The campground was quiet with great trails/boardwalks to the waterfalls and the lake. Keep in mind when planning this campground is 30 miles through the park to the headquarters and Lake of the Clouds.
Oct 30, 2023 · Erica CampbellA beautiful state park! Went for a day trip from northern Wisconsin. The waterfalls are gorgeous. Pretty easy hike to see them on a very well constructed boardwalk. Pictures do not do it justice.
Aug 10, 2023 · Debby Salberg25 years ago My wife and I met here... first come first serve camping.I have been to every state park in Michigan, and this is tops. The river has cut incredible formations into these series of falls, in my opinion the most breathtaking falls in Michigan.I AM biased, but this campground has it all for the nature lover. Not a circus like other campgrounds, basic camping with basic services.Down the steps to Lake Superior where river meets is where all your daily worries fade in view of the natural splendor.AMAZING star watching at night. If I had to recommend any destination, this would be number one.The drive is 8 hours, the memories are forever.
Feb 25, 2024 · Scott HuffmenThe site numbers are painted on the concrete road, no signs are available. Look down! For non-powered sites, Site # 2, 4 and 6 are on the edge of lake Superior, giving superior view. (No pun intended) 6 has the best view with the least trees but also can be quite windy at night.Walk-in sites such as 12-15 need some footwork to bring all your stuff to the site. Cars can only be parked some distance away. Also no firewood for sale on-site. Bring some along the way to save another 15 mile trip.In all great campground!
