Ragans Family Campground Introduce
For local residents in and around Madison, Florida, searching for "camping near me" that caters to families, Ragans Family Campground, located at 1051 SW Old St Augustine Rd, Madison, FL 32340, USA, presents itself as a destination with a range of advertised amenities. However, recent customer experiences suggest a need for careful consideration and awareness of potential limitations. While the property boasts natural beauty and certain recreational features, feedback indicates inconsistencies in service and amenity availability that local users should be aware of when planning their visit.
Ragans Family Campground, positioned in Madison, Florida, aims to provide a comprehensive family camping experience. The initial impression, according to one reviewer, is that the property itself is "absolutely gorgeous," characterized by "big beautiful trees" and "beautiful lakes." This suggests a potentially scenic and pleasant environment for those seeking a natural escape within a reasonable distance. The presence of playgrounds is also noted, with one reviewer highlighting a "decent" playground and another specifically praising a "really good one" that their children enjoyed. This indicates that the campground offers facilities aimed at entertaining younger visitors, making it potentially attractive for families with children looking for "camping near me" with on-site recreational options.
However, the positive aspects of the environment are somewhat tempered by other observations. The newest playground reportedly lacks shade, which could be a significant concern during the hot Florida summers, necessitating extra precautions like sunscreen and umbrellas. Additionally, one reviewer strongly advises bringing "LOTS of bug spray" due to the prevalence of gnats, no-see-ums, bumble bees, and mosquitoes. While acknowledging that insects are "part of camping in the wilderness," the emphasis suggests they may be particularly noticeable at this location. Furthermore, the process for garbage disposal is described as inconvenient, with a specific timeframe for placing garbage by the road that is not reliably followed by pickup, leading to issues with squirrels rummaging through the trash.
In terms of services and amenities, the advertised offerings seem extensive, leading to "very high expectations" for some visitors. However, recent experiences indicate potential discrepancies between what is promoted and what is actually available. A significant disappointment reported by one family was the closure of the water park, despite a prior phone confirmation stating it would be open. This highlights the importance of verifying the operational status of key amenities directly with the campground, especially if they are a primary reason for choosing this location. Similarly, the gem mining activity was also closed, with an alternative offered of purchasing a bag of dirt with a potential gem inside for an additional cost. These closures can significantly impact the overall experience, particularly for families with children who may be looking forward to these specific activities.
Another critical aspect of the services at Ragans Family Campground, as reported by a disgruntled visitor, is the inconsistent level of staff professionalism and customer service. The reviewer recounted encountering staff members who were "NOT professional at all," lacking customer service skills, and being "VERY RUDE, VERY UNFRIENDLY." This negative interaction significantly detracted from their experience, even overshadowing the positive aspects of the property itself. The reviewer did note two young ladies in the office/store who were "very pleasant and sweet," suggesting that customer service quality may vary among staff members. The lack of water for an entire day during one visitor's stay, coupled with the staff's apparent lack of empathy, further underscores potential issues with service responsiveness and guest care. While another reviewer who visited during the winter acknowledged that some activities were closed due to the off-season, the issues reported by the first reviewer seem to extend beyond seasonal closures and relate to communication, amenity availability, and staff conduct.
Key features of Ragans Family Campground, based on the available information, include its potentially beautiful natural environment with large trees and lakes, as well as the presence of playgrounds for children. However, these features are accompanied by potential drawbacks such as the lack of shade at the newest playground, significant insect presence, and an inconvenient garbage disposal system. The advertised amenities of a water park and gem mining may not always be operational, requiring verification prior to booking. The overall experience appears to be significantly influenced by the quality of the staff, with reports of both exceptionally friendly and unprofessional interactions. The availability of potable water and the provision of campsites are basic services that seem to be in place, although the water outage reported by one visitor raises concerns about the reliability of these essential services.
Currently, there is no explicitly stated promotional information for Ragans Family Campground in the provided reviews. However, the fact that the campground advertises amenities like a water park and gem mining on its website (as mentioned by one reviewer) could be considered part of their promotional efforts to attract families. Local users interested in any potential discounts, seasonal rates, or special packages should contact Ragans Family Campground directly at (850) 973-8269 or +1 850-973-8269 to inquire about current offers and to verify the operational status of specific amenities, especially the water park and gem mining.
The reviews suggest that Ragans Family Campground aims to cater primarily to families with children, given the emphasis on playgrounds and the advertised water park and gem mining activities. However, the potential for seasonal closures of these key attractions, as well as the reported issues with staff attitude and service reliability, should be carefully considered by local families looking for "camping near me." While the natural beauty of the property and the presence of lakes may appeal to a broader range of campers, the practical considerations of shade, insects, and garbage disposal, along with the potential for amenity closures and inconsistent service, warrant thorough investigation before making a reservation.
In conclusion, Ragans Family Campground in Madison, FL, offers a local camping option with a potentially beautiful environment and family-oriented amenities like playgrounds and lakes. However, feedback from recent visitors indicates potential drawbacks, including seasonal or unexpected closures of key attractions like the water park and gem mining, issues with staff professionalism and customer service, lack of shade at the newest playground, significant insect presence, and an inconvenient garbage disposal system. Local users searching for "camping near me" should weigh these factors carefully and are strongly advised to contact the campground directly at (850) 973-8269 or +1 850-973-8269 to verify the current operational status of all advertised amenities, inquire about any recent improvements or changes in management, and get a clear understanding of what to expect during their stay. While the property may have potential, based on recent reviews, it is essential for local campers to be well-informed before choosing Ragans Family Campground for their next outdoor adventure.

Ragans Family Campground Reviews
My wife and I had very high expectations, after reading all the amenities that the website offered. We were excited to take our youngest daughter and our 3 young grandchildren on this fabulous camping adventure, along with our friends and their children. However, just minutes after arriving, we were met with disappointment and ATTITUDE!! The water park park was closed (though we were told it was open during a phone call to confirm, prior to making reservations, and driving over 3 hours to get there). along with the water park being closed, the gem mining was also closed, however, we were told that we could purchase a bag of dirt for 20.00 and there MIGHT be a gem in the bag... there were a few staff members that were NOT professional at all, having no customer service skills at all. VERY RUDE, VERY UNFRIENDLY. The property itself is absolutely gorgeous. with big beautiful trees and decent playgrounds ( NO SHADE at the newest playground though, so bring sunscreen and an umbrella for shade. The lakes were beautiful as well. Our stay lasted from Friday afternoon to Sunday morning. We spent the entire day Saturday with NO WATER. The staff had no empathy for its guests during this inconvenience either. The pool is small, with NO SHADE either. Bring LOTS of bug spray, because you will be eaten alive by the gnats, no see'ems, bumble bees, and mosquitoes!! ( part of camping in the wilderness). And they will tell you to have your garbage out by the road between 8-10am.. trust that it will not be picked up before 2pm and by the time they get to it, the squirrels have already rummaged through it SEVERAL TIMES. ( they should put garbage cans in the budget). They currently have a "now hiring sign" out front, so I really do hope that they plan to hire a more professional property /general manager that has experience in customer service , and just being kind. I didn't catch the short chubby lady's name that was so negative and hateful, but they really need to put her on garbage duty, and bring in some less argumentative and a lot better positiveness. (There were two young ladies working the office/store that were very pleasant and sweet).. PROMOTE THEM!! I truly wish I could give a 5 star rating, but that negative Nancy done us in... I really hope they take these reviews seriously, because that place really does have amazing potential... with the right staff!!
Apr 08, 2025 · Homero DiazWe had a nice time spent at this campsite. Unfortunately, we realized that it was winter for a lot of places here and had our expectations pretty high seeing the pool and all the activities cater to young children. If it was summer it would be so much fun but obviously not a lot of people camp during the winter period so hence why some activities are closed for the season. The playground was a really good one! Our kids pretty spend the whole 5 hours playing at the play ground.
Jan 05, 2025 · Hailey McConchieThe campground is clean and spacious. There is tons of activities for the kids to do, everybody’s very friendly very safe place for the children to roam and have fun. The side-by-side and four wheeler trails are lots of fun. Our children love the pool with the waterslide and the trampolines. This is a place that we go to every Fourth of July and Halloween. It has become a tradition. Definitely recommended.
Mar 13, 2025 · Diana “Kit-Kat” CDisappointed to say the least. Guess it is my fault for not doing more research. It’s been 4 years since we’ve been here. Had another baby and it’s a 4 hour drive. We were SO excited to come back. Their New Year’s Eve use to be AMAZING. So much to do. This year all they have is their basic activities they do every Friday-Sunday. Tie dye and a craft. They said it was too wet (morning dew) to do their “warrior obstacle course”. Staff is friendly even tho I was clearly annoyed. I can’t blame them. The place is completely dead. I love the old school nature vibe that you don’t get at many new resorts. But to go from what I posted on the second photo to absolutely nothing, really sucks. Oh. But they got a new playground (which I will add is really nice). We won’t travel this far again, makes sense why the park is dead. Owners really drove this place down. It’s sad.
Dec 31, 2024 · Tim & Emily HuffVery nice campground with SO many amenities for the kids. They were never bored, and that is saying something. With multiple playgrounds, full basketball court, mini golf, disc golf course, jump pads, and plenty of room to ride scooters and bicycles, they were never without entertainment. We visited in the winter, so did not get to enjoy the waterpark and pool, but plan to return in warmer months to try them out. Office staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. Very enjoyable trip!
