Rainbow Point Campground Introduce
Looking for "camping near me" that offers lakeside access and a family-friendly environment? Rainbow Point Campground, located in the Boise National Forest near Donnelly, Idaho (address: Forest Rd 422R, Donnelly, ID 83615), might be just the place. Based on recent customer reviews, this small campground offers several appealing features alongside some considerations to keep in mind.
Environment and Location: Rainbow Point Campground is situated within the Boise National Forest, near Donnelly, Idaho. This location strongly suggests a natural, wooded environment typical of a national forest in this region. One reviewer mentioned it as a potentially "awesome campground" for a "good family weekend in the woods," reinforcing the likely presence of trees and a forest setting. More specifically, the campground features a "boat ramp" and a "dock," indicating that it is located on or very near a body of water suitable for boating, likely Cascade Lake, which is near Donnelly. Lakeside campgrounds often provide opportunities for scenic views and water-based activities.
However, one reviewer noted that the campground had been "logged thinned recently (last two summers)" and that "large slash piles remain and disturbed soil areas are present," which detracted from the visual appeal, resulting in a 3-star rating for visuals due to "Forest Service thinning treatments." This suggests that while the natural setting has potential, recent forestry work has temporarily impacted the aesthetics of some areas within the campground. Despite this, the underlying natural beauty of the Boise National Forest and the lakeside location likely still offer a pleasant environment.
Services and Amenities: Rainbow Point Campground offers a range of amenities, as detailed by a reviewer:
- Number of Sites: It is a "small CG" with only 11 sites in total.
- Reservations: Of these, 7 sites can be reserved online, while 4 are available on a "first come/no reserve" basis. This provides options for both planning ahead and spontaneous trips.
- Water: The campground has "pressurized water," which is a significant convenience for drinking and other needs.
- Waste Management: There are "garbage containers" and a "recycle bin for plastic and alum," indicating provisions for waste disposal and recycling.
- Restrooms: The facilities include "vault toilets." One reviewer commented that "the bathrooms could use a little more upkeep," suggesting that while present, the restrooms might not be the most modern or frequently maintained.
- Lake Access: A key feature is the presence of a "boat ramp," "boat trailer parking," and a "dock," making it well-suited for those wishing to bring boats and enjoy the water.
- Fees: There are fees associated with camping: $15 for a single site and $30 for double sites, with a "1/2 price senior discount" available. This confirms it is a "pay to camp spot."
- Camp Host: There is a "camp host on-site," which can be beneficial for assistance, information, and security.
These amenities suggest a moderately developed campground catering to both families and those interested in lake activities.
Features and Activities: The standout features of Rainbow Point Campground are its lakeside location with boating facilities and its family-friendly atmosphere. The boat ramp, trailer parking, and dock make it ideal for campers who want to bring boats for fishing, water sports, or leisurely lake exploration on what is likely Cascade Lake. The reviewer who recommended it for families with small kids highlights its suitability for a "good family weekend in the woods," implying a safe and enjoyable environment for children. The small size of the campground (11 sites) could also contribute to a more intimate and manageable setting for families.
While the recent forest thinning has impacted the visuals in some areas, the access to the lake and the surrounding Boise National Forest still provide opportunities for outdoor activities such as hiking, picnicking, and enjoying nature. The presence of a camp host can also enhance the camping experience by providing local knowledge and assistance.

Rainbow Point Campground Reviews
Decent little pay to camp spot but as a native idahoan we don't pay to camp so we found a sweet little spot across the road naturally. If you have small kids and are looking for a good family weekend in the woods this is an awesome camp ground. The bathrooms could use a little more upkeep tho in my opinion.
Jun 17, 2019 · Tempest BaldersonSmall CG only 11 sites total, 7 sites can be reserved online, 4 are first come/no reserve. Pressurized water in CG, garbage containers, vault toilets, recycle bin for plastic and alum. Has a boat ramp, boat trailer parking and a dock. However, CG was logged thinned recently (last two summers) and large slash piles remain and disturbed soil areas are present..so the 3 stars rating for the visuals left from Forest Service thinning treatments. Some sites are not very attractive. Fees are 15$ for single site, 30$ for double sites, 1/2 price senior discount. Camp host on-site.
Jul 03, 2018 · Greg D. LindGood NF campground. No hook ups! 15$ single site. Only 4 are first come first serve. The rest are reservation only! Boat dock. Vault toilets. Water fill. Gets kinda crowded.
