Riverside Park Campground Introduce
Looking for "camping near me" in the Springfield, Illinois area? Riverside Park Campground, located at 4115 Sandhill Rd, Springfield, IL 62702, USA, offers a camping experience that, based on recent customer feedback, presents a mix of positives and areas for potential improvement. You can reach them at (217) 753-0630 or their mobile number, +1 217-753-0630, for inquiries and bookings.
As a local option within the "camping near me" category, Riverside Park Campground provides a location that some visitors have found convenient and quiet. One reviewer noted its good location and the peaceful atmosphere during their stay, highlighting the absence of traffic noise. They also appreciated having their choice of over 50 sites, indicating ample availability, at least during their visit. The presence of water and electric hookups at the sites was also mentioned as a positive aspect, catering to both tent and RV campers seeking these basic utilities. The campground was described as fairly easy to find, despite a slight initial confusion in directions.
However, it's essential to consider all feedback to gain a comprehensive understanding of what Riverside Park Campground offers. Another camper who stayed several years prior shared a less favorable experience. They mentioned that while the rates for tent camping were reasonable at the time, the bathrooms were cold and in poor condition, lacking hot water in the showers. Road conditions within the campground were also reported as being bad during their visit. This reviewer also noted an incident of being bitten while sleeping and subsequently falling ill, alongside overpriced firewood despite the availability of dead trees for potential gathering (though regulations on gathering firewood may vary and should be checked). Their overall impression was that the campground was "lackluster" and, while acknowledging its primitive nature, suggested that better peace and quiet could be found elsewhere.
More recent feedback provides a slightly different perspective, indicating that while the bathhouse needed some attention to spider webs, it was generally clean and suggested the need for updates. The sites were described as all gravel and not entirely level, though manageable. The fact that only the reviewer and the camp host were present suggests that the campground might experience periods of low occupancy, which could contribute to the quiet atmosphere mentioned. This could be a significant advantage for those seeking a secluded camping experience.
Considering the environment of Riverside Park Campground, the reviews suggest a location that can offer tranquility, particularly with the noted absence of traffic noise. The presence of over 50 sites implies a potentially spacious area. However, the older review points to possible issues with infrastructure, such as road conditions and the state of the bathrooms. The more recent review indicates some improvements or at least a different experience regarding cleanliness, though the need for updates to the bathhouse remains. The all-gravel sites might be beneficial for drainage but could pose challenges for tent setup depending on their levelness.
In terms of services and features, the availability of water and electric hookups is a significant plus for many campers, especially those with RVs or those who prefer some level of convenience while tent camping. The presence of a bathhouse, even with noted issues, provides a basic amenity. The mention of overpriced firewood in one review suggests that this might be an available service, though campers might want to inquire about current pricing and alternative options. The quiet location can be considered a feature for those prioritizing peace and relaxation during their camping trip.
Promotional information is not provided in the given reviews. Therefore, it's not possible to comment on any current discounts, special offers, or packages that Riverside Park Campground might be offering. Local users interested in potential promotions should directly contact the campground via phone or check if they have an online presence where such information might be advertised.
In conclusion, Riverside Park Campground near Springfield, IL, presents a mixed picture based on the available customer reviews. It appears to offer a potentially quiet location with a good number of sites and the convenience of water and electric hookups. However, past issues with bathroom conditions and road quality have been raised, and even recent feedback suggests the bathhouse could benefit from updates and that the gravel sites are not entirely level. For local users searching within the "camping near me" category, Riverside Park Campground might be a viable option, particularly if a quiet and less crowded environment with basic utilities is a priority. However, it would be prudent to contact the campground directly to inquire about the current condition of facilities, road conditions, and any other concerns based on the feedback provided. Visiting the campground beforehand, if feasible, could also help potential campers assess if it meets their expectations for a local camping experience.

Riverside Park Campground Reviews
It's been many years since I camped here with an ex. Rates were good for tent camping but bathrooms were cold and nasty. No hot water in the showers. Roads were too bad then. Didn't really get harassed but this place definitely wasn't the best to stay at. Wound up getting bit on my back by something while sleeping and got sick. Overpriced firewood bundles available but plenty of dead trees laying around. Definitely lackluster. It definitely is primitive camping but I can could get better peace and quiet somewhere else.
Mar 26, 2025 · Katy FordOnly campers there were us and camp host. It was a good location. Very quiet. All gravel. Not level sites, but not unmanageable. Water and electric. Fairly easy to get to, a little confusing, but we found it. No traffic noise. Bathhouse needed the spider webs wiped out but were clean, needed an update. It was an overnight stop for us. Didn't even unhook from the truck. Our choice of over 50 sites.
Jun 28, 2024 · Lisa WillisWow I read reviews and was very glad it was perfect for me! Family in hospital 10 minutes away! ... Close to lots of fast food & dining. There is a club with food down at the end of the road. No It's not a koa w/pool ($80+ per night) but plenty of space, shade & picnic tables. $25 per night! Very spread out. All shapes & sizes campers & tents. (Not payed anywhere ) Also the bath house is handicap with a code to enter. I felt safer at night. Well lit up
Aug 19, 2023 · 13kittykatI love this park! It has beautiful views along the Sangamon river. The park crews are housed here as well, and they are friendly and helpful when you have questions. Tom is the fella that will check you in, and he takes care to make sure your camping needs are met. I gave a 5 star review. Somebody should give Tom a hat with 5 stars on it!
Oct 28, 2023 · Todd LoweryAvoid.Campground and facilities are not well cared for. The road to sites is crumbling and very hard to see at night. Our first couple days no electricity until maintenance could come out. Site management has weird vibes as do the guests they attract. Families cussing and yelling at their kids and hovering around your campsite. Overall disorganized and dirty, trash overflowing from dumpsters not being emptied, loud music from a nearby bar until late hours. We were hoping for a quiet nature experience, the only part of that we got was swarms of mosquitoes and sadly that was the hilight of our stay. There's better locations for campers in the nearby area. We moved sites and are much happier and comfortable.
