For local residents in central Iowa seeking a "camping near me" experience that offers a quiet, rural setting, Shady Brook Camping & RV Adventures, LLC, located at 36026 Jewell Ct, Earlham, IA 50072, USA, presents a potential option. Contactable at (515) 238-1998 and +1 515-238-1998, this campground in Madison County has received mixed but informative reviews regarding its environment, services, and suitability for different types of campers. This introduction aims to provide a detailed and objective overview for prospective local users based on the available customer feedback.
The Beautiful and Quiet Rural Environment
Shady Brook Camping & RV Adventures, LLC is praised for its "nice rural location" and "beautiful setting," suggesting a peaceful and scenic environment that appeals to those looking to escape the noise and bustle of urban life. One reviewer specifically noted that it was "very quiet," which can be a significant draw for campers seeking tranquility and relaxation. The name "Shady Brook" implies the presence of trees providing shade and possibly a brook or creek running through or near the property, enhancing the natural ambiance. The rural setting likely offers opportunities for observing local wildlife and enjoying the starry night skies away from city lights. For local users prioritizing a quiet and picturesque "camping near me" experience, Shady Brook appears to offer these qualities.
However, one reviewer mentioned that the "roads going in and out were dusty," suggesting that the internal or access roads might be gravel or unpaved. While this is a common characteristic of rural campgrounds, it's something to be aware of, especially during dry periods. The reviewer also noted that this could be easily remedied with a "quick spray with the hose," implying that the owners are aware of this issue. Another concern raised was the presence of "many deep ruts in driveway," which could pose a challenge for vehicles entering and exiting the campground, particularly those with lower clearance. Local users should consider these access conditions when planning their visit.
Services and Amenities Offered
Based on the customer reviews, Shady Brook Camping & RV Adventures, LLC provides several amenities, with varying degrees of satisfaction reported:
- Helpful Staff: Cody, presumably a staff member, is highlighted for being "great to work with" and helpful in resolving issues, such as moving campers to a more level site. This suggests a willingness to assist guests.
- Clean and Nice Showers with Hot Water: The shower facilities are described as "very clean and nice" with "very hot water," which is a significant positive for campers who appreciate good hygiene facilities.
- Full Hookups (Implied): The fact that RVs were accommodated and moved to different sites suggests the availability of hookups such as water and electricity, although sewer hookups are not explicitly mentioned. Local RV users should confirm the availability of specific hookups.
- Tent Camping Suitability: One reviewer stated it was "great if you tent camp," implying that there are suitable areas and conditions for tent camping, likely within the "beautiful setting."
- Uneven Sites for Rigs Towing: A significant concern was raised about the sites for "rigs towing" (presumably RVs and trailers) being "uneven," making it "very difficult to level." This is a crucial consideration for RV campers, who rely on level sites for the proper functioning of their appliances and overall comfort.
- Long-Term Campers: The presence of "many long term campers" is noted. This can contribute to a sense of community but might also mean that prime, level spots are often occupied.
- Dusty Roads and Rutted Driveway: As mentioned earlier, these are environmental factors that could impact the overall experience and accessibility.
- Check-in Office Odor: One reviewer mentioned a "dark smoke odor" in the check-in office, which, while not directly affecting the camping experience, could be a point of concern for some guests.
Local users should contact Shady Brook Camping & RV Adventures, LLC directly to inquire about the specific amenities available, the levelness of RV sites, and the current condition of the roads and driveway.
Key Features and Considerations for Local Campers
The key features of Shady Brook Camping & RV Adventures, LLC include its quiet, rural, and beautiful setting, clean and nice showers with hot water, and helpful staff. The suitability for tent camping is also a notable feature for those preferring a more traditional camping experience.
However, potential local users should carefully consider the following points raised in the reviews:
- Uneven RV Sites: This appears to be a significant issue for RV and trailer campers, potentially requiring extra effort and equipment to level their rigs. It's crucial to inquire about the levelness of specific sites when booking.
- Dusty Roads and Rutted Driveway: These conditions could affect the cleanliness of vehicles and the ease of access to and from the campground.
- Customer Friendliness Concerns: One reviewer suggested that the owners "could give attention to customer friendliness," indicating a potential issue with the overall welcoming experience beyond the helpfulness of specific staff members like Cody.
- Check-in Office Odor: The smoke odor in the office could be off-putting for some guests during the check-in process.
- Presence of Long-Term Campers: While not necessarily negative, the prevalence of long-term campers might influence the availability of prime spots and the overall atmosphere of the campground.
Local users should weigh these factors against their priorities when choosing a "camping near me" location. Tent campers might find Shady Brook particularly appealing due to its beautiful and quiet setting, while RV campers need to be aware of the potential for uneven sites and inquire accordingly.

Cody was great to work with! The first space we tried was not very level and Cody helped us move to a different space. The showers were very clean and nice very hot water. It was very quiet. The roads going in and out were dusty. Something a quick spay with the hose will fix. Thanks for the help Cody!! Hope to stay with you guys again.
Jun 04, 2024 · Benjamin McCoolNice rural location. Great if you tent camp. Beautiful setting. Perhaps owners could give attention to customer friendliness. Dark smoke odor check in office. Needs to give attention to many deep ruts in driveway. My biggest concern was site for rigs towing was uneven sites. Very difficult to level. Many long term campers. Once set up no problem.
May 01, 2024 · David KinderdineDon't know much about the cabin but it looked very nice from the outside. This is a beautiful and well-kept site. Fantastic for kids but also plenty of room for privacy if you don't have any kids. Owner was super friendly and helpful. I would definitely recommend this as a great campsite.
Jul 31, 2024 · James Alvares (Jim)This campground is located a few miles off route 80, which makes it very convenient for travel. Also a lot of pull Thro, full hook up sites makes it ideal if you don’t want to unhitch your tow vehicle. The sites are very close but the owners worked with us when we asked to move. Very windy so no one had their awning out. Quiet except for highway noise which did not bother us. Nice bathroom facilities and very nice cabin.
Jun 16, 2024 · Ruthie marchThe hosts were very accommodating for our late arrival and offered to reserve a space for us over the phone. Found a tent site right by a stream with plenty of shade. You can certainly hear the trucks on 80, but that's what you expect when pulling off for the night along the interstate. The sites are pretty close together, but we only pitched camp to sleep and packed up early so we didn't mind.
