Soldier Lake Campground Introduce
For local users seeking a back-to-nature "camping near me" experience in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, Soldier Lake Campground, located off FS 3138 in Raco, MI 49781, USA, offers a rustic and scenic lakeside retreat. This primitive campground provides a tranquil escape for those who appreciate the simplicity of nature without the need for extensive amenities. While it forgoes electrical hookups and a dump station, Soldier Lake Campground compensates with its natural beauty, clean facilities, and direct access to a lovely swimming lake. It's an ideal destination for those looking to disconnect and immerse themselves in a more traditional camping experience.
The environment surrounding Soldier Lake Campground is characterized by its pristine natural beauty. Situated alongside Soldier Lake, campers can expect picturesque water views and the opportunity to enjoy lakeside activities. The campground is described as a "great primitive campground," emphasizing its focus on a more natural and less developed camping experience. One reviewer noted it as a "nice spot to swim," indicating that the lake is suitable for enjoying the water. The presence of pine trees is also mentioned, which provide shade but also come with a caution to avoid parking directly underneath them due to potential pine tar residue that can be difficult to remove from vehicles and RVs.
While Soldier Lake Campground is a primitive site without electrical hookups or a dump station, it does offer essential services for a comfortable stay. Clean pit toilets are provided, which are a basic but necessary amenity for a rustic campground. Community water is "easily and abundantly available" throughout the campground. However, it's important to note that the water has a high iron content. While initially clear, it may develop a brown or yellow tint if left standing and can cause staining, particularly in RV faucets. Campers planning to fill their RV tanks are advised to bring a water bandit (a device to easily connect a hose to a spigot) and a filter to mitigate the iron content and prevent staining. For shorter stays using water for drinking and cooking, the iron content might be less of an issue, but awareness is key.
The features of Soldier Lake Campground cater to those who enjoy a more self-sufficient camping style. The paved road leading into and around the lake is a significant advantage, especially for those towing larger trailers, as one reviewer with a 30' travel trailer noted it to be "in great shape." This ease of access is a notable feature for a primitive campground. The campsites themselves are described as accommodating for larger RVs, with one reviewer finding a level site (site 8) right next to the lake, and mentioning that "many sites" can handle 30-foot and larger RVs. While reservations can be made, the reviewer also observed that "most sites were available FComeFS" (first-come, first-served), offering flexibility for spontaneous campers. For those interested in launching kayaks, a 15-foot grade down to the sandy shore is present at a number of sites, with site 8 being one of them, providing easy access to the lake for paddling.
In terms of technology, the campground offers a mixed experience. Spotty digital TV channels were received, with the number varying from over 20 on clear days to only 3 good ones. Verizon data was reported as "weak and spotty," with only one bar and very slow speeds. This suggests that while some digital TV might be available, reliable internet or strong cellular service should not be expected. Generators are permitted at the campground, but typical quiet hours are enforced to ensure a peaceful environment for all campers.
While the reviews do not mention any specific promotional offers, the appeal of Soldier Lake Campground lies in its natural setting and the rustic camping experience it provides. For local users seeking an affordable and straightforward "camping near me" option with direct lake access and the ability to accommodate larger RVs, the campground offers significant value. The first-come, first-served availability for many sites also provides flexibility for those who may not plan far in advance.
For local residents in the Raco, Michigan area looking for a primitive lakeside camping experience, Soldier Lake Campground offers a great option. The clean pit toilets and easily accessible community water (with the caveat about iron content) provide essential amenities. The paved roads and spacious, level sites make it suitable for a range of camping setups, including larger RVs. The lake itself offers opportunities for swimming and kayaking, enhancing the outdoor experience. While digital connectivity may be limited, this can be seen as a benefit for those wanting to truly disconnect and enjoy the natural surroundings. The combination of natural beauty and basic, well-maintained facilities makes Soldier Lake Campground a worthwhile consideration for your next "camping near me" adventure.
In conclusion, Soldier Lake Campground provides a rustic and scenic lakeside camping experience in the Raco, Michigan area. Its environment is characterized by the beauty of Soldier Lake and the surrounding natural landscape. While it offers primitive amenities such as clean pit toilets and community water (with noted iron content), it compensates with spacious, level sites capable of accommodating large RVs, easy lake access for swimming and kayaking, and a generally peaceful atmosphere. The first-come, first-served availability of many sites adds to its appeal for spontaneous getaways. For local users seeking a traditional, technology-minimal "camping near me" experience focused on enjoying nature and lakeside activities, Soldier Lake Campground is a commendable choice.

Soldier Lake Campground Reviews
Great primitive campground. Potable water had a brown tint to it after a while, but otherwise a great spot. Clean pit toilets, nice spot to swim. No electric or dump station at this campground.
Jul 16, 2024 · Mark LustilaWe came in towing a 30' TT. Nice that the road in is paved all the way around the lake and in great shape. Try to not park under the pines as they can weep pine tar, very hard to remove.Community water is easily and abundantly available. Water has high iron content, and left to sit will turn yellow and stain. Not good for RV faucets unless filtered. Bring a water bandit and filter if you need to fill a tank.Found a level site next to the lake. Site 8. But there are many sites that can accommodate a 30 footer and larger RV. Reservations can be made but we found most sites were available FComeFS.There's a 15' grade down to the lake a number of sites have access to where you could slide a kayak down on the sandy shore. 8 does. Got spotty digital TV channels (some 20+ on clear days, only 3 good). Verizon data was weak and spotty, only 1 bar and very slow.Generators are ok but typical quiet hours are in effect.
Aug 21, 2022 · Jerry WontorcikReally great experience, large campsites and clean bathrooms. The lake is quiet and gorgeous!
Sep 02, 2024 · Kyleigh TylerNice place to camp. Paved road throughout. Accommodates rigs to 35 ft. Back in only. No pull through sites. As expected, no hook-ups. Very clean vaulted toilets. Fresh water is available near the bathrooms. Very well maintained. Friendly campground hosts. Plenty of space between sites. Lots of walk in lake access. Good hiking trails. Very quiet. We had the entire park to ourselves. Stayed in late June, lots of mosquitos and wood ticks; but that is expected at this time of the year. Will stay again.
Jun 26, 2019 · Ron RemondiniReally loved this campground! No motors on the lake so it's very quiet, serene, and has good stars. Camp host is awesome and regularly cleans the bathrooms. Bring your own water. The water there is very iron-y or something discolored. Also be aware that Verizon is spotty there. AT&T is better. Would definitely stay here again!
