Split Mountain Campground Introduce
For local adventurers seeking exceptional "camping near me" with a blend of natural beauty and historical significance, Split Mountain Campground presents a unique opportunity. Situated within the renowned Dinosaur National Monument near Jensen, UT 84035, USA, this campground offers more than just a place to pitch a tent. It provides an immersive experience in a landscape rich with geological wonders and ancient human history. While specific details about amenities and services are limited in the provided reviews, the overwhelming sentiment points to the stunning beauty of the area and the wealth of exploration opportunities available to campers.
One of the initial impressions from a visitor who stayed at the group campground (presumably due to the closure of another site) is the sheer beauty of the location. This suggests that Split Mountain Campground is nestled within a visually appealing environment, likely characterized by the dramatic landscapes typical of Dinosaur National Monument. Campers can anticipate being surrounded by impressive geological formations, potentially including canyons, cliffs, and the unique features that give the monument its name.
Interestingly, a reviewer noted that they initially believed the primary attraction of the area was solely dinosaur fossils. However, they were delighted to discover that Dinosaur National Monument offers "so much more." This highlights the diverse range of experiences available to visitors of Split Mountain Campground. Beyond the paleontological significance, the park boasts a "huge" area perfect for hiking and exploration. This implies that campers can look forward to numerous trails catering to various fitness levels, offering opportunities to delve deeper into the monument's natural wonders.
A particularly captivating aspect of the area, as mentioned by the reviewer, is the presence of "petroglyphs and pictographs." These ancient rock art sites offer a fascinating glimpse into the lives and cultures of early inhabitants of the region. The fact that these are described as "amazing" suggests that they are well-preserved and provide a significant cultural and historical dimension to a visit to Split Mountain Campground. This unique feature sets this campground apart from many others, offering an educational and enriching experience alongside the natural beauty.
The review mentioning approximately 15 sites provides some insight into the size of Split Mountain Campground. With a limited number of sites, it might offer a more intimate and less crowded camping experience, particularly appealing to those seeking a quieter retreat. However, this also suggests that availability could be limited, especially during peak seasons. Local users planning to camp here should consider booking in advance if possible, although no specific booking information was provided.
The mention of "only 1 pit toilet" is a crucial piece of information regarding the campground's facilities. This indicates that the restroom amenities are basic and might be a consideration for campers who prefer more developed facilities. For those accustomed to backcountry or more rustic camping, this might be perfectly acceptable, but it's essential for potential visitors to be aware of this limitation to plan accordingly.
The reviewer also noted that their stay was in the "off-season." This might imply that the conditions and the overall experience could differ during peak times in terms of crowds, weather, and potentially the availability of other services within Dinosaur National Monument. Local users considering camping during different seasons should research typical weather patterns and any seasonal closures or service adjustments within the park.
Based on the limited information, Split Mountain Campground appears to offer a unique camping experience centered around the natural beauty and historical significance of Dinosaur National Monument. The key highlights for local users seeking "camping near me" include:
- Stunning Natural Environment: Located within the picturesque landscapes of Dinosaur National Monument.
- Access to Hiking and Exploration: A "huge park" with ample opportunities for hiking and discovering the natural wonders.
- Historical Significance: Proximity to "amazing" petroglyphs and pictographs, offering a glimpse into the past.
- Intimate Setting: Approximately 15 sites, potentially providing a quieter camping experience.
However, it is also important for potential campers to be aware of the limited facilities mentioned, specifically "only 1 pit toilet." This suggests a more rustic camping experience, and users should ensure they are prepared for this level of amenity. Additionally, the lack of information about water sources, hookups, or other standard campground amenities means that campers should be self-sufficient in these regards or seek further information from the National Park Service.
As no phone number or other direct contact information for Split Mountain Campground itself was provided in the reviews, local users seeking to make reservations or inquire about specific amenities should visit the official website for Dinosaur National Monument or contact the park's general information line. This would be the best way to obtain up-to-date details on availability, fees (if any), regulations, and the specific amenities offered at Split Mountain Campground.
In conclusion, Split Mountain Campground offers a compelling option for local users looking for "camping near me" that combines natural beauty with unique historical and cultural attractions. The opportunity to explore the vast landscapes of Dinosaur National Monument and witness ancient rock art is a significant draw. However, potential campers should be prepared for potentially limited facilities based on the available review and are advised to seek detailed information from official park sources before planning their visit to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable experience.

Split Mountain Campground Reviews
Stayed at this group campground because the other one was closed. It's beautiful. I think there are about 15 sites. Only 1 pit toilet. I stayed in the off season.

Sep 28, 2024 · laurie leonardo hinesGreat scenic spot. The cottonwoods add much needed shade to the group camp ground on the Green River. The flushing toilets where in operation and cleaned daily. The red ants are everywhere be prepared if you are ground camping. The ground vegetation disappears about mid may and the daily wind cycle will give you a sandblasted experience. All in all the river and the scenery makes it worth it but be prepared for the ants and the sand
May 30, 2021 · Jason PoulsonGreat spot to camp, there are places to explore and it's not to big so there never feels like everyone is packed in. The river can make it feel muggy sometimes but the breathtaking landscape makes up for that. Getting up at dawn and seeing the sunlight shining only on the east side of the hills while you make breakfast is one of the best experiences I've had. It is a little cold but I camped in the last week of March.
