SPOT Campground Introduce
For local residents and travelers seeking a welcoming and conveniently located "camping near me" experience in eastern South Dakota, SPOT Campground in De Smet offers a charming and well-regarded option. Situated in the heart of a region rich in history and natural beauty, this small, well-maintained campground provides full hookups and a friendly, personalized service that sets it apart. According to recent customer reviews, SPOT Campground is particularly appealing for its helpful owner/manager, its affordability, and its prime location for those interested in the Laura Ingalls Wilder historical sites and the natural features described in her beloved books.
The environment of SPOT Campground is characterized by a significant presence of trees, offering shade and a more natural camping feel compared to open, grassy RV parks. The abundance of trees not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of the campground but also provides a more comfortable and cooler environment during the warmer months. This feature is frequently appreciated by campers seeking a respite from the sun and a more traditional outdoor camping ambiance. Despite being a smaller campground, the presence of mature trees contributes to a sense of privacy and tranquility for each campsite.
In terms of services, SPOT Campground boasts full hookups, a significant advantage for RV travelers. Full hookups typically include connections for electricity, water, and sewer, providing a level of convenience and comfort for those traveling with recreational vehicles. This ensures that RVers can easily manage their essential utilities without the need for frequent trips to dump stations or water fill-up points. While described as a "no frills" campground in one review, the provision of full hookups is a fundamental amenity for many RV campers.
A standout feature of SPOT Campground, consistently praised by visitors, is the exceptional customer service provided by the owner/manager, Mark. He is described as very friendly and helpful, readily offering area maps and information to assist campers in exploring the local attractions. This personal touch can greatly enhance the overall camping experience, making visitors feel welcome and well-informed. Furthermore, the provision of free firewood is a significant perk, allowing campers to enjoy campfires without the added expense and hassle of purchasing wood elsewhere. This thoughtful gesture contributes to the campground's reputation for hospitality and value.
While SPOT Campground might be considered "no frills" in terms of extensive amenities, it compensates with its affordability, especially for members of Passport America, a discount camping club. The great price point makes it an attractive option for budget-conscious travelers looking for a clean and well-maintained place to stay without breaking the bank. The value proposition is further enhanced by the friendly service and the essential full hookups for RVs.
The location of SPOT Campground is a major draw, particularly for fans of Laura Ingalls Wilder. It is conveniently situated within a mile or so of key attractions related to her life and books, including the summer pageant, the Ingalls Homestead, and the various points of interest in downtown De Smet. This proximity allows visitors to easily access these historical and cultural sites, immersing themselves in the world of the beloved author. For those planning to visit these attractions, SPOT Campground offers an incredibly convenient base.
Adding to its unique appeal is the campground's location right on the Big Slough, a significant geographical feature mentioned in Laura Ingalls Wilder's "On the Shores of Silver Lake." This direct access provides a tangible connection to the stories and the landscape that inspired them, offering a special experience for fans of the books. Campers can potentially enjoy views of the slough, observe local wildlife, and perhaps even engage in activities like fishing or birdwatching, depending on the nature of the slough in that area.
The positive experiences of past visitors, such as the one who stayed for a week and had a "fantastic time," underscore the overall quality and appeal of SPOT Campground. Despite being described as "no frills," the combination of a well-maintained environment, essential services like full hookups, the exceptional friendliness and helpfulness of the owner, the affordable pricing, and the fantastic location near local attractions and natural landmarks creates a highly satisfying camping experience.
While specific details about the size of the campsites, the layout of the campground, or other amenities beyond full hookups and firewood are not provided in the reviews, the overall impression is that SPOT Campground prioritizes the essentials and excels in customer service and location. Campers looking for extensive recreational facilities or luxurious amenities might need to look elsewhere, but those seeking a clean, convenient, and friendly base for exploring De Smet and its surroundings will likely find SPOT Campground to be an excellent choice.

SPOT Campground Reviews
Well maintained, small, full hook-ups campground with lots of trees. The owner/manager was very friendly and helpful with area map and information and free firewood.
Oct 11, 2021 · Tina SchmidtThis is a no frills campground for a great price, especially with Passport America discount. What it lacks in amenities, it makes up for with personal customer service. Mark, the owner, is very helpful and a great host. The location is fantastic for Laura Ingalls Wilder fans. It's within a mile or so of the summer pageant, the homestead and all the attractions downtown. Best of all, it is right on the Big Slough mentioned in "On the Shores of Silver Lake". We stayed a week and had a fantastic time!
Jul 18, 2021 · Melissa VarasoOne of our favorite camp spots– it's no frills, but affordable, beautiful and the pond has some great fish. We camped with a 42ft 5th wheel and it was super easy to get in and out quickly. Owner is a lot of fun!
Aug 13, 2021 · Eric NovakIt is a full hookup with pull thru site $20 Campground with PA discount located along side US14 just inside Desmet. The place is full of huge 100+ year old oaks. We have a 35 foot travel trailer fit nicely. It is quiet and peaceful. The owners/operators are very nice people. We like our stay. Our Passport America discount made this a great value. It is a cash only. We stayed during the Laura Engel Wilder Pageant. We liked our stay and would stay again.
