Sugarloaf Key / Key West KOA Resort Introduce
For local residents seeking a "camping near me" experience that transcends the ordinary and offers a true resort-style escape, the Sugarloaf Key / Key West KOA Resort, located at 251 Co Rd 939, Summerland Key, FL 33042, USA, presents an exceptional destination. Situated in the beautiful Florida Keys, this KOA resort has garnered praise for its pleasant and accommodating staff, exceptional tropical landscaping that provides a sense of seclusion at each campsite, and a range of amenities designed for a comfortable and enjoyable stay. Having been recently rebuilt after a hurricane, the resort showcases thoughtful design and modern conveniences. While it offers a fantastic overall experience, potential guests, particularly those traveling with dogs, should be aware of the limited natural grass areas within the campground.
When considering "camping near me," the environment and the level of service often play a crucial role in the decision. The Sugarloaf Key / Key West KOA Resort consistently receives high marks for its ambiance and staff. One reviewer described it as "one one of the best campgrounds we've ever been," emphasizing its true "resort feel." The staff is repeatedly mentioned as being pleasant, accommodating, and readily available to assist guests, contributing significantly to the positive atmosphere. The landscaping is also a standout feature, with "exceptional" tropical foliage surrounding each campsite, creating a sense of privacy and immersion in a lush, tropical setting. This thoughtfully designed environment allows guests to feel secluded even within a campground setting, enhancing the overall relaxation and enjoyment of their "camping near me" experience. The recent rebuilding efforts post-hurricane have clearly resulted in a well-planned and aesthetically pleasing resort.
The environment of the Sugarloaf Key / Key West KOA Resort is distinctly tropical, characterized by lush foliage that provides shade and privacy. The landscaping efforts have created individual campsites that feel secluded, enhancing the sense of being in a natural oasis. The resort's location in the Florida Keys suggests proximity to water, although the reviews don't explicitly detail waterfront access from all campsites. However, the overall feel is one of a tropical retreat, a departure from typical campgrounds. One reviewer mentioned the "stunning views of the lake" although this might be a general comment about the Keys environment rather than a specific feature of this KOA. A notable environmental consideration, particularly for pet owners, is the "lack of grounds for dogs" inside the campground, with "no grass, anywhere." This necessitates walking pets outside the gate for natural ground. While there is a small K9 park with artificial turf in a convenient location, it might not be ideal for all dogs. Despite this limitation, the overall tropical ambiance and well-maintained landscaping contribute to a unique "camping near me" environment.
The Sugarloaf Key / Key West KOA Resort offers a comprehensive range of services and features aimed at providing a comfortable and convenient stay. The availability of "full hook ups" caters to RV travelers, providing essential water, electric, and sewer connections. The "easy pull-through spots" are a significant convenience for RVs of all sizes, simplifying setup and departure. The resort also offers monthly rates for those seeking a longer stay. A notable feature is the "host pilot" who guides guests to their sites, a unique touch that enhances the check-in experience. Trash pickup throughout the day ensures a clean and well-maintained environment. The resort boasts a pool and cafe area that is described as "very private and sectioned off," offering a relaxing space for recreation and dining. The food at the cafe is reported to be "surprisingly great" with limited but convenient options. Restrooms are noted to be "very clean" although with a "quite poorly designed" and "wry tight and awkward layout," but importantly, they are insect-free with well-sealed entry doors. The resort also features a gift shop, which is currently being upscaled. For those traveling with non-camping family or friends, the resort now offers hotel rooms as an additional accommodation option. The staff is consistently praised as fantastic, pleasant, accommodating, and available.
A specific feature of the Sugarloaf Key / Key West KOA Resort is the thoughtful design implemented during the post-hurricane rebuild. The KOA patio pull-through spots are highlighted as being "very well landscaped" and providing a sense of privacy despite proximity to other sites. This suggests that the layout and landscaping were carefully considered to maximize guest comfort and enjoyment. The separation of the pool and cafe area contributes to a more private and relaxing atmosphere. The attention to detail in the restrooms, ensuring cleanliness and preventing insects, is another positive feature, even if the layout is not ideal. The addition of hotel rooms expands the resort's ability to accommodate a wider range of guests. The small K9 park with artificial turf, while not natural grass, still provides a designated space for pets. The availability of a host pilot to guide guests to their sites is a unique and welcoming service.
While the reviews do not explicitly mention specific promotional offers, KOA resorts often have various membership benefits and potential discounts. Local residents interested in staying at the Sugarloaf Key / Key West KOA Resort should inquire about KOA Value Kard Rewards membership for potential savings and benefits. It would also be prudent to check the resort's website or contact them directly using the provided phone numbers, (800) 562-7731 or +1 800-562-7731, to inquire about any seasonal specials, local resident discounts, or package deals that might be available. Given the resort-style amenities and location in the Florida Keys, it's worth exploring all potential avenues for savings to enhance your "camping near me" experience.
Considering the "camping near me" platform category, the Sugarloaf Key / Key West KOA Resort offers a premium camping experience in a stunning tropical location. The combination of resort-style amenities, exceptional staff, and beautiful landscaping creates a unique getaway. While the lack of natural grass areas for pets is a point to consider for dog owners, the overall positive feedback, particularly regarding the post-rebuild design and the quality of service, makes this KOA a strong contender for those seeking a memorable "camping near me" experience in the Florida Keys. The availability of both RV sites and hotel rooms broadens its appeal to a diverse range of travelers.
Imagine arriving at the Sugarloaf Key / Key West KOA Resort and being guided to your beautifully landscaped and private campsite by a friendly host pilot. Picture yourself relaxing by the pool in a secluded area, enjoying a meal at the surprisingly great cafe, and spending your evenings surrounded by tropical foliage. While you might need to take your furry friend outside the gate for a walk on natural grass, the convenience of the K9 park and the overall resort-style atmosphere contribute to a relaxing and enjoyable stay. The clean facilities and the attentive staff further enhance the experience, making it feel more like a vacation than traditional camping. The option for family or friends to join you in a hotel room within the resort adds another layer of convenience and inclusivity to your "camping near me" getaway.
In conclusion, the Sugarloaf Key / Key West KOA Resort offers a high-quality "camping near me" experience with a distinct resort feel in the tropical paradise of the Florida Keys. Its exceptional staff, beautiful and private campsites, and thoughtful post-hurricane rebuild are consistently praised. While the limited natural grass for pets is a noted drawback for some, the overall amenities, including full hookups, easy pull-through sites, a private pool and cafe, clean restrooms, and even hotel rooms, make it an attractive option for a memorable getaway. Local residents are encouraged to contact the resort directly to inquire about any available promotions and to experience the unique charm of this Key West KOA.

Sugarloaf Key / Key West KOA Resort Reviews
This is one one of the best campgrounds we've ever been. It truly had a resort feel. Staff were all so pleasant, accommodating and available. The landscaping was exceptional. With the tropical foliage surrounding camp site, you felt secluded. The only disappointment was the lack of grounds for dogs. There's no grass, anywhere inside campground. We had to go outside of the gate to walk our pup. There is a small k9 park in a very convenient location but it's artificial turf and small.
May 03, 2025 · Pam SnyderWe stayed here for the first time since they rebuilt after the hurricane and we were extremely impressed by the thought put into this location. We had a KOA patio pull-through spot. It was very well landscaped and made it feel quite private despite the proximity to other sites likely about the same as other parks. The makes all the difference though. The pool and cafe area are very private and sectioned off. Food was surprisingly great. Limited offerings, but nice to be able to have options and good food which is super convenient being right there. Rest rooms are very clean though quite poorly designed. Wry tight and awkward layout was a huge miss in the design. But serviceable and most important no insects and solid well-sealed entry door to prevent that. Gift shop is being upscaled as the selection was surprisingly limited for such a destination location. Fantastic staff. Love having a host pilot come bring you to your site. Trash pickup throughout the day. Also awesome that they have hotel rooms now too if family or friends wanted to come stay as well but don’t have a camper.
Apr 13, 2025 · Anthony PalermoReally glad we decided on the hotel in KOA Sugarloaf. Perfect room for family of four with a bunk bed in the second bedroom. The pool area and grounds are very well kept. The parking is tight under the hotel but manageable. This hotel was perfectly located as we split time in Key West and Marathon. It was nice being away from the crowds in Key West but not too far away from our excursions. Rooms had washers and dryers which was very handy for towels and swimsuits. Would definitely stay here again.
Apr 23, 2025 · nick pStayed at one of the suites here with the family. I was really with the cleanliness of the apartment, because it’s an apartment with a kitchen, living room, and large balcony with a table for four, plus an additional two chairs and a little table to sit and watch the ocean and the resort overall. I would definitely stay here again. I really like that it has a bar by the pool and food you can order too! The beach has inflatable play items for teens and adventurous adults, plus lounge chairs and coconut trees. Very nice resort. It was our first KOA and it won’t be the last.
Mar 26, 2025 · Javier ParedesAnother great stay! This was our second year staying here. We came back because it is a beautiful campground, great amenities for the whole family, and closest to Key West for us to day trip there. The customer service and staff at the stores and bar is always wonderful! We really enjoy the live music nights. They have a beautiful pool areas, the grounds are walkable, pet friendly, they have 2 onsite condo buildings, and good for boaters.
