Sunset Campground Introduce
Sunset Campground, located at Fashoda Way, Pollock Pines, CA 95726, USA, is a prominent and well-regarded camping destination within the Eldorado National Forest. Situated directly on the shores of Union Valley Reservoir, this campground is an excellent choice for individuals and families seeking a comprehensive outdoor experience, making it a top contender for anyone looking for "Camping Near Me" in the Sierra Nevada mountains. With its blend of natural beauty and essential amenities, Sunset Campground caters to both tent campers and RV enthusiasts.
Sunset Campground is aptly named for its breathtaking views of colorful sunsets over Union Valley Reservoir. Located at an elevation of approximately 5,000 feet in the Crystal Basin, the campground is surrounded by towering cedar and ponderosa pines, providing ample shade and a true forest ambiance. Some sites are fully shaded, while others are situated in open meadows, offering diverse settings for campers. The climate here is characterized by warm, dry summers and cold, wet winters, making the period from June to September the prime season for camping and outdoor activities. This area of the Eldorado National Forest is steeped in history, with remnants of the 1800s California Gold Rush scattered throughout the region, offering a glimpse into the past for curious visitors.
The campground's direct access to Union Valley Reservoir is a major draw, providing a vast playground for water-based recreation. Beyond the immediate lakeside environment, the surrounding Eldorado National Forest offers extensive opportunities for wildlife viewing, with species such as spotted owls, bobcats, mule deer, and porcupines inhabiting the area. For those looking to explore on two wheels, the Union Valley Bike Trail, a 4.8-mile paved path, connects various campgrounds along the eastern shores of the lake, including Sunset Campground, near its boat ramp. While the campground offers a feeling of being immersed in nature, it is still within a reasonable distance of Pollock Pines for basic supplies, and further afield, attractions like Lake Tahoe and Placerville offer more extensive services and experiences.
Sunset Campground is a large facility, boasting 121 single-unit sites, which include 30 designated tent-only spots, alongside sites that can accommodate trailers and RVs. Each campsite is thoughtfully equipped with a picnic table, a fire ring with a grill, and a bear box for secure food storage – an essential feature given the active bear presence in the area. Potable drinking water is readily available throughout the campground, with the water system regularly tested during the operational season to ensure safety.
For convenience, the campground provides vault toilets, which, according to recent reviews, are generally kept clean and well-stocked with toilet paper, although occasional smells are noted, typical for porta-potty type facilities. Coin-operated showers are also available, typically costing $3 for 3 minutes, with additional time for extra quarters. This amenity is a welcome luxury for campers after a day of outdoor activities. A significant advantage for RV users is the on-site dump station, eliminating the need to travel far for waste disposal. Firewood is available for purchase from the camp host, making it easy to enjoy campfires. Cell service is reported to be good within the campground, allowing campers to stay connected if needed. The campground also features a boat ramp with an accessible boarding dock and a paved parking area, catering directly to boaters and jet ski enthusiasts. Overflow parking is also available, which can be useful during peak periods.
The primary feature of Sunset Campground is its exceptional access to Union Valley Reservoir, which enables a diverse range of water activities. Campers can enjoy swimming at the designated swimming beach, sailing, motor boating, water skiing, and paddle sports like kayaking, canoeing, and paddleboarding. Fishing is a popular pastime, with the reservoir stocked with rainbow, brown, and mackinaw trout, as well as Kokanee salmon, providing ample opportunities for anglers. The campground's layout, with its numerous spacious sites, including single, double, and triple capacity options, allows for a comfortable and often private camping experience, even for larger groups. Some sites, like #77, are noted for their large size and direct lake views, making them ideal for bigger gatherings. The presence of specific tent-only sites ensures a dedicated area for traditional tent camping. The well-maintained nature of the campsites, with their basic yet essential amenities, contributes to a hassle-free stay. The ability to walk trails directly from the campsite to find quiet moments and scenic spots around the lake adds to the overall appeal of the campground. Additionally, the availability of bear boxes at every site underscores the campground's commitment to safety and responsible wildlife interaction.
Sunset Campground is highly appealing to a broad spectrum of campers searching for "Camping Near Me" in the Eldorado National Forest. It's particularly well-suited for families given its range of activities and amenities designed for comfort and safety. The campground's strong selling points include its direct lake access, enabling a variety of water sports, and its suitability for both tent and RV camping with a convenient dump station. The spacious and often shaded campsites, coupled with the natural beauty of the surrounding forest and lake, make it an attractive option for those seeking a tranquil yet active outdoor getaway. The positive recent review highlights its cleanliness, well-stocked restrooms, and enjoyable water access, reinforcing its appeal. The phone numbers (530) 644-2349 and +1 530-644-2349 provide direct contact for reservations and inquiries, which is crucial given its popularity, especially during the peak season from June to September. Prospective campers should also note that reservations are highly recommended, often available up to six months in advance, and some sites operate on a first-come, first-served basis. The campground is also pet-friendly, requiring pets to be on a leash and owners to clean up after them, broadening its appeal to those traveling with their furry companions.
