Fashoda Way, Pollock Pines, CA 95726, USA

4.0
Pros: Beautiful sites! The beach is pretty and plenty of room for everyone. Campgrounds is roomy and spread out from each other.. Our family reunions have been happening here for quite some time and we love it here.Cons: Bathroom always stink (the ones closer to the beach the worse it is), no tp (almost 85% of the time) so bring your own. Parking sucks. Day use people take over parking for those who actually camp. Showers: $3for 3 min and additional 20sec for each quarter.‼️Hosts: We had some new ones this year. After a weekend, one got roust and rude (Katie I think is her name) throwing a fit about our campers and saying we have left a mess on the beach and need to take ALL our items off the beach. This was not us! Our family respect the beach and always keep it tidy at the end of the day. The day use people over the weekend made a mess and they assumed it was us and came out accusing our group. This is not professional in the least bit and rules should not be made up on the fly. Katie makes up regulations as she goes along. One night she was driving by telling us to be IN OUR TENTS by 10pm! Other nights she’d drive by yelling at us to be quiet (not even 10pm). She’s not nice to the kiddos. She scared them by telling them a bear was on its way and that they should hide in the tent! She does not seem to lower her voice and if we kindly ask her to, she gets more riled up. She blamed our kids for riding bikes at night and once we stated that it wasn’t our kids, she got more pissed. We’ve been so patient with her but she’s just gone off the rails. Ed was nice at first but he definitely started to take her side later on and used foul language with us once asked for certain clarifications. The hosts needs to be looked into because this type of behavior is not acceptable. - Allie O

Fashoda Campground Introduce

Fashoda Campground, nestled on a peninsula on the eastern side of Union Valley Reservoir in Pollock Pines, CA, offers a picturesque and popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts. Located at Fashoda Way, Pollock Pines, CA 95726, USA, this campground is a prime spot for anyone searching for "Camping Near Me" in the Eldorado National Forest. Known for its beautiful sites and direct access to the reservoir, it provides a range of activities for families and individuals seeking a nature-filled escape.

Environment and Location

Fashoda Campground is situated within the expansive Eldorado National Forest, at an elevation of approximately 5,100 feet. This location places it amidst dense forests and rugged terrain, offering stunning natural beauty. The campground's position on a peninsula of Union Valley Reservoir provides excellent access to water activities, making it a hub for those who enjoy the lake. The surrounding area is rich with the history of the California Gold Rush, with remnants of that era still discoverable throughout the region. Wildlife thrives in the Eldorado National Forest, with opportunities to spot animals such as spotted owls, bobcats, mule deer, and porcupines, adding to the immersive natural experience.

The climate in this region can vary significantly, with temperatures ranging from around 30°F in winter to 85°F in summer, indicating that the best season for camping is generally from late May to early September when the weather is most favorable. The campground offers beautiful, roomy, and spread-out sites, ensuring a sense of privacy and space for campers. Its accessibility to the beach, which is described as "pretty and plenty of room for everyone," is a significant draw, especially for families and groups who frequent the area for reunions.

For those looking to explore beyond the campground, Union Valley Reservoir is a hub for activities, and the Union Valley Bike Trail, a 4.8-mile trail with an easy 300-foot climb, connects various campgrounds on the east side of the lake. Nearby attractions include the scenic Lake Tahoe and the historic town of Placerville, offering additional outdoor and cultural activities within a reasonable driving distance from Pollock Pines.

Services and Amenities

Fashoda Campground offers a range of facilities designed to support a traditional camping experience. All 30 sites at Fashoda are designated as walk-to tent camping sites. While campers can drive close to their tent site for unloading, vehicles must then be parked in the general parking lot, which ranges from 40 to 400 feet from the campsites. Each campsite is equipped with essential amenities, including a picnic table, a fire ring, a BBQ pedestal, and a bear box for proper food storage, which is crucial given that bears frequent the area. Potable water is available at the site, with the water system tested monthly during the use season, ensuring a safe drinking supply. Vault toilets are also available for restroom facilities, though their cleanliness can be inconsistent according to some reviews. Showers are available, but they operate on a fee basis, typically costing $3 for 3 minutes, with an additional 20 seconds for each quarter. Firewood is usually available for purchase from the camp host, and trash collection services are provided. Cell service is reported to be good in the area, which can be a comfort for those who need to stay connected. For RV campers, while Fashoda is primarily a tent-only campground with no hookups, dump stations are conveniently located at nearby Yellowjacket or Sunset campgrounds. Overflow parking is also available, which can be helpful during peak season.

Features

The defining feature of Fashoda Campground is its direct connection to Union Valley Reservoir. This allows for a wide array of water-based activities, including swimming, sailing, boating, water skiing, and fishing. Anglers can seek rainbow, brown, and mackinaw trout, as well as Kokanee salmon. The Union Valley Bike Trail is also accessible, connecting various campgrounds and offering a pleasant option for hikers and bikers. The campground's design, with sites "roomy and spread out from each other," creates a sense of privacy and allows for a more relaxed camping experience, even when the campground is busy. The presence of a beautiful beach with "plenty of room for everyone" further enhances the appeal for those seeking water recreation. The campground operates generally from June to September, aligning with the favorable weather for outdoor activities in the region.

While the campground generally offers a positive experience, some recurring concerns highlighted by visitors include the cleanliness and lack of toilet paper in the vault toilets, particularly those closer to the beach. Parking can also be an issue, with day-use visitors sometimes occupying spaces intended for overnight campers. The fee for showers is also noted by some. Despite these points, the natural beauty and spaciousness of the sites remain strong positive aspects that draw visitors back, with many families considering it a cherished tradition for reunions.

Promotional Information and Target Audience

Fashoda Campground is ideally promoted to individuals, families, and groups looking for a scenic and activity-rich camping experience in the Sierra Nevada mountains, particularly for those searching "Camping Near Me" in the Pollock Pines area. Its strong emphasis on lake access and water sports makes it highly attractive to boaters, anglers, and swimmers. The "beautiful sites" and "roomy and spread out" layout appeal to those seeking a more tranquil and spacious camping environment compared to crowded alternatives. The long-standing tradition of family reunions at the campground underscores its suitability for larger groups and multi-generational gatherings. The availability of amenities like picnic tables, fire rings, and bear boxes ensures a comfortable and safe camping trip.

While the reviews highlight some operational challenges, particularly concerning camp host interactions and facility maintenance, the core appeal of Fashoda Campground lies in its natural setting and recreational opportunities. Visitors are encouraged to contact the campground directly at (530) 293-0827 or +1 530-293-0827 for the most current information regarding reservations, site availability, and any changes in operational policies, especially regarding camp hosts. Customer Feedback

Customer feedback for Fashoda Campground presents a mixed but generally positive picture, with strong emphasis on the natural beauty and spaciousness of the sites. Positive aspects frequently mentioned include:

  • "Beautiful sites!" and "Campgrounds is roomy and spread out from each other."
  • The "beach is pretty and plenty of room for everyone."
  • It's a favored spot for "family reunions," with a history of positive experiences spanning "20 years."

However, recent reviews, specifically for the 2024 season, indicate significant concerns regarding camp hosts and facility maintenance:

  • "Bathroom always stink... no tp (almost 85% of the time) so bring your own."
  • "Parking sucks. Day use people take over parking for those who actually camp."
  • Showers are "($3 for 3 min and additional 20sec for each quarter)."
  • Severe complaints about specific camp hosts (Katie and Ed) for 2024, citing:
    • Being "roust and rude," "throwing a fit," and "accusing our group" of messes not made by them.
    • "Making up regulations as she goes along," including telling campers to be "IN OUR TENTS by 10pm!" at inconsistent times.
    • "Not nice to the kiddos," including scaring them with false bear warnings.
    • Using "foul language" when questioned about rules.
    • Negligence in "taking such horrible care of the camp sites (garbage everywhere, bathrooms absolutely filthy, no toilet paper ever restocked)."
    • Allegations of "drinking of the job and proof of them using foul language."

Despite these significant issues with the camp hosts in the 2024 season, the long-standing tradition of families returning to Fashoda Campground for two decades suggests a strong underlying appeal based on its intrinsic qualities: its beautiful location, spacious sites, and access to the reservoir. It is important for potential visitors to note that while the natural setting and layout are highly praised, recent operational issues with management have negatively impacted the experience for some. Prospective campers are advised to check recent reviews and contact the campground directly for updates on management and facility conditions to ensure their expectations align with the current situation.
