Susanville BLM Campground Introduce
For local residents in the Susanville, California (zip code 96130) area looking for "camping near me," the Susanville BLM Campground, managed by the Bureau of Land Management, presents a seemingly convenient option. Located within a 15-minute drive from the main city of Susanville, this small campground offers the potential for a quick and accessible outdoor escape. However, recent reviews from visitors highlight some significant concerns regarding the cleanliness, maintenance, and overall environment of the campground, which local users should carefully consider before planning a visit.
One detailed review paints a concerning picture of the campground's condition upon arrival. The visitor reported picking up approximately 25 pounds of trash scattered throughout the area. The types of litter found included small liquor bottles, empty cigarette packages, a used Narcan container, a significant amount of paper towels used as toilet paper, and broken glass. This extensive amount and type of trash suggests a potential issue with littering and a lack of regular cleanup at the campground. The presence of items like liquor bottles, cigarette packages, and a used Narcan container also raises concerns about the activities that may be taking place at or near the campground.
The same reviewer, who spent one night at the campground, further noted finding another empty pack of cigarettes and several more empty small liquor bottles in the morning. This indicates that the littering issue may be ongoing. While the reviewer did mention that whoever was responsible for the mess "partied quietly," the presence of such items still detracts from the natural environment and could pose hazards, especially broken glass.
The reviewer specifically cautioned against recommending the campground for small children or pets who might explore the area due to the potential presence of drug paraphernalia and other hazardous waste. This is a critical safety consideration for local families and pet owners looking for a nearby camping spot. The reviewer also provided a specific note for local law enforcement, suggesting that the back left-hand corner of the campground, when facing it from the highway, appears to be a frequent gathering spot for individuals engaging in drug or alcohol use. This raises potential safety and security concerns for other campers.
In contrast to the alarming cleanliness and safety issues raised in the first review, a second visitor offered a more positive, albeit still cautionary, perspective. They described the Susanville BLM Campground as "a small BLM campground with plenty of shade from the ponderosas and easily accessible from Susanville." The presence of ponderosa pine trees suggests a potentially pleasant, wooded environment with natural shade, which can be a significant benefit, especially during warmer months. The accessibility from Susanville, being just a 15-minute drive from the main city, is also highlighted as a positive attribute for local users seeking a quick getaway.
However, this second reviewer also pointed out some maintenance issues. They noted the presence of "many deep ruts" upon entering the campground, advising drivers to be mindful of where they drive. This suggests potential problems with the campground's access road or parking areas, possibly due to erosion or lack of grading. Additionally, they mentioned a "single broken picnic table," indicating a lack of upkeep of basic campground furniture. While these issues may be less severe than the cleanliness and safety concerns raised in the first review, they still detract from the overall camping experience.
Considering both reviews, the Susanville BLM Campground presents a mixed bag for local users seeking "camping near me." On the one hand, it offers the advantages of being a small, shaded campground with mature ponderosa pine trees and easy accessibility from Susanville. These features could make it an appealing option for a quick nature retreat. However, the significant issues raised regarding the extensive litter, potential drug-related activity, rutted entrance, and broken picnic table are serious drawbacks that cannot be ignored.
For local families with children or pet owners, the first reviewer's warning about potential hazards from trash and drug paraphernalia should be given significant weight. The suggested gathering spot for individuals engaging in illicit activities also raises concerns about the overall safety and atmosphere of the campground. While the second reviewer did not mention these issues, the stark contrast between the two accounts suggests a potentially inconsistent or deteriorating environment at the Susanville BLM Campground.
Given these concerns, local users considering this campground should proceed with caution. It might be advisable to visit the campground during daylight hours before committing to an overnight stay to assess the current conditions for themselves. Checking for recent updates or reviews on other platforms could also provide a more comprehensive picture. If the issues with trash and potential safety hazards persist, it would be prudent to consider alternative "camping near me" options in the Susanville area that offer a cleaner and more secure environment, especially for those camping with children or pets.
In conclusion, while the Susanville BLM Campground offers the benefits of shade and easy access from Susanville, recent reviews highlight significant problems with excessive litter, potential drug-related activity, a rutted entrance, and broken amenities. Local users searching for "camping near me" should be aware of these issues and carefully weigh the potential advantages against the reported drawbacks, especially concerning safety and cleanliness. It is recommended to seek more current information or consider alternative campgrounds in the area to ensure a positive and safe outdoor experience.

Susanville BLM Campground Reviews
Nice little spot after picking up about 25 lbs of trash scattered about, to include (but not limited to) small liquor bottles, empty cigarette packages, used narcan container, a lot of paper towels used as toilet paper and broken glass. Spent one night and found another empty pack of smokes and several empty small liquor bottles again in the morning. At least whoever it was partied quietly. If these individuals continue coming around I would not recommend for small children or pets who would want to explore and whatnot. Note to local LEO's- when facing the spot from highway, back left hand corner is where it seems the druggies/drunks like to hang out.
Apr 16, 2025 · MarcA small BLM campground with plenty of shade from the ponderosas and easily accessible from Susanville. 15 min drive from main city. Theres many deep ruts as you enter so be mindful where you drive, also a single broken picnic table

Dec 31, 2024 · Maxwell WilliamsGreat campground off of the road. Road is a little washed out but there's a big area to the left that was flat. We were able to fit our camper here. Would definitely return.
Dec 13, 2020 · Taylor O'BrienThe dispersed campground is right off the highway, so highway noise can be an issue. Some deep ruts were still present from winter in several of the spots for campers. For a free spot it fills the need and the community of Susanville is minutes away.
