Aspen Grove Campground

Gallatin Rd, Susanville, CA 96130, USA

4.0
If this place wasn't so far off the main road I would've given it five stars. But it's remoteness makes it unique, private and serene, at least when we were there last August 2016.We came later in the evening and left early morning , but the time in between was pleasant and incredible for early-morning, quiet walks along the lake. The host was a hoot, & fun to talk to as we quickly started up a fire and made dinner. No pesky animals until Bluejay & squirrels the next morning ha ha I'd highly recommend this place, as an out-of-the-way retreat. We were one of the few in the campground so maybe it's more active earlier in the summer. - dawnie heidegger

Aspen Grove Campground Introduce

Are you a local user in California searching for "camping near me" and yearning for a quiet, private, and serene escape? Aspen Grove Campground, located on Gallatin Rd, Susanville, CA 96130, USA, might be exactly what you're looking for. Based on the feedback from fellow campers, this tent-only campground offers a unique and peaceful experience, albeit a bit off the beaten path. Let's explore what Aspen Grove Campground has to offer.

Environment and Location:

Aspen Grove Campground's environment is characterized by its "remoteness," which, according to one reviewer, contributes to its "unique, private and serene" atmosphere. The name itself suggests the presence of aspen trees, which are common in higher elevations and can create beautiful scenery, especially in the fall when their leaves turn golden. The campground also offers access to a lake, as one visitor enjoyed "early-morning, quiet walks along the lake," indicating a picturesque waterfront setting. The combination of aspen groves and a lake suggests a tranquil natural environment ideal for relaxation and enjoying nature.

Located off Gallatin Rd near Susanville, CA, the campground might require a bit of a drive from main roads, which contributes to its secluded feel. This remoteness could also mean less light pollution, potentially offering excellent opportunities for stargazing. The area around Susanville in Lassen County is known for its forests, lakes, and mountainous terrain, so campers can likely expect to be surrounded by natural beauty.

One reviewer who visited in August 2016 noted that they were "one of the few in the campground," suggesting that it might not always be crowded, especially perhaps later in the season or on weekdays. Another camper who stayed in June 2023 described it as "Quiet!" further reinforcing the serene nature of the location.

Services and Facilities:

Based on the reviews, Aspen Grove Campground appears to be a more rustic, tent-only camping area. One review explicitly states, "Tents only," so RVs and other hard-sided camping vehicles are likely not permitted. The mention of the camp host helping to start a fire suggests that campfires are allowed, and there are likely fire rings available at the campsites.

The fact that the camp host was "a hoot, & fun to talk to" and the camp hosts in June 2023 were described as a "very friendly couple" indicates that the campground is managed by welcoming and helpful individuals, which can greatly enhance the camping experience.

While specific amenities like restrooms, water sources, or picnic tables aren't explicitly detailed in the reviews, the well-maintained nature mentioned by the motorcycle tourist ("Well-maintained by the camp hosts") suggests that basic facilities are likely present and kept in good condition. Given that it's a $12.50 per night campground (with a Golden Age card discount mentioned), it likely offers essential services without extensive frills.

The absence of mentions of amenities like showers or hookups suggests that these are probably not available, aligning with a more traditional, tent-focused camping experience.

Features and Activities:

The standout features of Aspen Grove Campground include its quiet and private atmosphere, its location near a lake (offering opportunities for lakeside walks and potentially other water-related activities), and its natural setting likely involving aspen trees. The remoteness itself can be a feature for those seeking an escape from more bustling campgrounds.

Activities likely available in and around Aspen Grove Campground include:

  • Quiet walks along the lake.
  • Enjoying the serene natural environment.
  • Stargazing due to the remote location.
  • Campfires (where permitted).
  • Potentially hiking in the surrounding area, although this is not explicitly mentioned.

The motorcycle tourist found it a "Perfect stop for a motorcycle adventure," highlighting its suitability for those traveling through the area and looking for a peaceful overnight stay.

The mention of "no pesky animals until Bluejay & squirrels the next morning ha ha" humorously suggests that while you might encounter typical small wildlife, the area isn't overrun with nuisance animals, which can be a concern at some campgrounds.

For local users searching for "camping near me" who prioritize peace, quiet, and a connection with nature, Aspen Grove Campground near Susanville offers a compelling option.
