Eagle Lake - Rocky Point East Introduce
For local adventurers in California seeking a "camping near me" experience that combines natural beauty with a more rugged, self-sufficient approach, Eagle Lake - Rocky Point East, located in Rocky Point, Susanville, CA 96130, USA, offers a distinctive option. With contact numbers (530) 257-0456 and +1 530-257-0456, this location provides access to the stunning Eagle Lake and the surrounding California High Desert landscape. It's important to note, however, that this is less of a traditional campground and more akin to a boondocking or dispersed camping area with some basic amenities and a donation-based system.
The environment surrounding Eagle Lake - Rocky Point East is characterized by the beauty of the California High Desert and the presence of the expansive Eagle Lake. One reviewer enthusiastically described it as a "really great place" with "beautiful views," particularly recommending hiking to the tops of the hills for the most rewarding vistas. The area offers opportunities for exploring the unique flora and fauna of the high desert, as well as enjoying the lake itself. Eagle Lake provides swimming access for those looking to cool off, and it also features "boat launching spots," although one review clarifies that these are more of an area to back into the lake suitable for smaller, lightweight boats due to potential shallow waters.
A key feature of Eagle Lake - Rocky Point East is its nature as a boondocking location. As one reviewer pointed out, the map location provided is essentially the beginning of a dirt road that extends along the lake shore for about a mile. This road can be "a bit rough in some areas," although it is reportedly manageable for passenger vehicles if driven cautiously. Trucks are likely to have fewer issues, but those with trailers and RVs are advised to be "very cautious" due to the road conditions. One RVer with a large truck and camper managed the drive slowly, indicating that it is possible but requires care and awareness of the terrain.
Despite its more primitive nature, Eagle Lake - Rocky Point East does offer some basic amenities. One review mentions "two permanent bathrooms" and "temporary extras" being put in place during busier times. A second reviewer specifically noted "two outhouses" near the hillside in a large gravel turnaround area, describing them as "very clean and kept." The presence of these maintained restroom facilities is a significant benefit for a boondocking location. Additionally, "fire rings" are scattered about the area, allowing for campfires (subject to local regulations and fire risk). Parking is available, and there is "lots of space for trailers and camping" in the large gravel turnaround area once you reach the end of the rougher road.
It's important to understand that Eagle Lake - Rocky Point East does not have designated campsites in the traditional sense. Instead, as one reviewer noted, it's "more akin to beach camping than campground camping." Campers find a suitable spot within the gravel area to set up their camp. Shade can be limited, primarily found near "scrub brush and some medium size trees closer to the hills." Therefore, bringing your own shade structures might be advisable, especially during the hotter months in the High Desert.
A unique aspect of Eagle Lake - Rocky Point East is its donation-based system. There is a "donation box at the entrance to the road." While the site is "actually free," visitors are strongly encouraged to contribute what they can to help fund the cleaning of the outhouses and the maintenance of the road. This system relies on the goodwill of campers to ensure the continued upkeep of the area. This can be seen as a very affordable option for "camping near me," especially for those comfortable with a more rustic experience.
The features of camping at Eagle Lake - Rocky Point East include the stunning natural beauty of Eagle Lake and the High Desert, opportunities for hiking with rewarding views, access to the lake for swimming and boating (primarily for smaller boats), and the peace and quiet of a less developed area. One reviewer who arrived at night reported "absolute peace and quiet, not another soul in the area" and enjoyed a "beautiful sunrise." The wide-open spaces and potential for solitude can be a significant draw for those looking to escape more crowded campgrounds.
While there isn't specific promotional information in the traditional sense, the "free" aspect of camping (with the encouragement of donations) is a significant draw. The positive reviews highlighting the beauty and the well-maintained outhouses serve as strong endorsements. For local users seeking an affordable and scenic "camping near me" experience with lake access and hiking opportunities, Eagle Lake - Rocky Point East is definitely worth considering, provided they are comfortable with the boondocking style of camping and the potentially rough road conditions.
In conclusion, Eagle Lake - Rocky Point East offers a unique camping experience in the California High Desert near Susanville. Its stunning views, lake access, and hiking opportunities are major attractions. While it operates more as a boondocking area with basic amenities like clean outhouses and fire rings, the donation-based system makes it a very affordable option for "camping near me." Potential visitors should be aware of the rough dirt road leading to the camping area, which may require cautious driving, especially for larger RVs and trailers. If you are seeking a peaceful and beautiful lakeside camping experience with a more self-sufficient approach, Eagle Lake - Rocky Point East could be an ideal choice. Remember to consider leaving a donation to support the maintenance of this wonderful location. For any specific inquiries, you can contact the provided phone numbers.

Eagle Lake - Rocky Point East Reviews
Really great place, amazing hiking spot, beautiful views, I recommend hiking to the tops of the hills for the best results, it's amazing up there, 10/10, would recommend. (Detailed: boat launching spots, two permanent bathrooms, temporary extras are put in place during busy times, swimming access, parking, lots of space for trailers and camping.)
May 30, 2020 · Jesse BabbIf your needing a place to boondock in the California High Desert this is a wonderful location. Note... The map location is really just the beginning of a dirt road that travels along the lake shore for about a mile. It is a bit rough in some areas though a passenger vehicle can manage. Most trucks won't have a problem but trailers and RVs should be very cautious. I drove my F350 Dually with a 3000lb Bigfoot camper and didn't have any trouble but it was a slow drive. Just about the time where you wonder if there is an actual campsite you will come up over a small rise and it opens up into a very large gravel turnaround area. There are two outhouses here tucked near the hillside (I drove in at night so I didn't even know they where there until the morning) that where very clean and kept. I enjoyed a beautiful sunrise in the morning and absolute peace and quite, not another soul in the area. Note that this is more akin to beach camping than campground camping. There are fire rings scattered about but no actual designated campsites. Find a spot in the gravel area and setup camp. Shade is limited to scrub brush and some medium size trees closer to the hills. There is an area to launch a boat though it's not an actual boat launch, more of an area where you can back into the lake. This is probably best for lightweight aluminum fishing boats that don't have issues with shallow water. Finally, there is a donation box at the entrance to the road. This site is actually free but please consider dropping what you can into the box as it helps to fund cleaning of the outhouse and maintenance of the road.
Sep 15, 2016 · Robert AdamisWe went earlier in the summer before the usual camping rush and practically had the entire place to ourselves. Absolutely beautiful weather and was not too cold. Highly recommend for any family, couple, or friends who want a nice trip to enjoy the water or go hiking. Campsites were well maintained and the groundskeeper’s were very kind. Will be visiting again soon!
Sep 09, 2018 · callum findlayRockyn Point is an amazing "primitive" campground with no reservations or water. The toilets are super clean, as is the campground; maintained once a week and suppoted with donations. The gravel is very loose; be careful not to get stuck, especially near the actual point where there is a boat launch.
