Like another review here, we hiked in from Rock ridge Rd. About half the hike was on dirt forestry road, and half was on the Florida Trail through the woods. Fire ring seemed ok although we did not use the grill portion, just the ring. The picnic table is rotting and very close to collapsing and the top/table surface portion has become unattached to the whole...it has maybe a couple months left in its usable life. This is a back country campsite without water or any amenities, so everything must be carried in and waste must be carried out. It was a hunting weekend and I suspect most weather favorable times to camp here will coincide with hunting so if you take anything away from this review, MAKE SURE YOU HAVE SOME BLAZE ORANGE TO WEAR ON YOURSELF AND YOUR PACK. We heard only a few gunshots the entire weekend. At night some barred owls rounded out our experience, but we assume the hunters kept the majority of animals away. We brought our dog on a leash and honestly probably won't be doing that again. We treated him at home with flea and tick treatment a few days BEFORE going and within minutes he was covered with ticks. Definitely a tick heavy area. Adjust accordingly. - Dustin Hostetler

SWFWMD Mott Hammock Camp Introduce

Are you a local user in search of a "camping near me" experience that takes you off the beaten path? Consider the SWFWMD Mott Hammock Camp, located off Cross Seminole Trl, Lakeland, FL 33809, USA. This backcountry campsite, situated within the Green Swamp Wilderness Preserve, offers a more primitive and secluded camping opportunity for those willing to hike in.

Based on recent reviews from fellow adventurers, accessing Mott Hammock Camp typically involves a hike. One reviewer noted hiking in from Rock Ridge Rd, which was approximately half on a dirt forestry road and half on the Florida Trail through the woods. Another review specifies that the hike in from Rockridge Road is 5.3 miles, while it's 8.7 miles from the trailhead on County Road 471. This clearly indicates that this is not a drive-up campsite and requires a significant trek to reach, appealing to those who enjoy hiking as part of their camping experience.

The environment surrounding Mott Hammock Camp is described as being within the woods, likely offering a natural and immersive experience. One reviewer mentioned being along the Florida Trail, a renowned long-distance hiking trail, which adds to the appeal for hikers. At the campsite itself, there is a fire ring, which one reviewer found "ok" for just the ring portion, noting they didn't use the grill. There is also mention of at least one and potentially two picnic tables. However, one reviewer described a picnic table as "rotting and very close to collapsing," with the tabletop unattached, suggesting that the amenities may be in need of maintenance.

It is crucial to note, as highlighted by the reviewers, that SWFWMD Mott Hammock Camp is a backcountry campsite without water or any amenities. This means that everything needed for the camping trip, including water, food, shelter, and other supplies, must be carried in, and all waste must be carried out, adhering to Leave No Trace principles. This type of camping requires more preparation and self-sufficiency than developed campgrounds.

One reviewer pointed out an important consideration for certain times of the year: "It was a hunting weekend and I suspect most weather favorable times to camp here will coincide with hunting so if you take anything away from this review, MAKE SURE YOU HAVE SOME BLAZE ORANGE TO WEAR ON YOURSELF AND YOUR PACK." This is a vital safety tip for anyone considering camping here, especially during hunting seasons. While the reviewer only heard a few gunshots, it underscores the need for high visibility for safety.

The natural environment also includes wildlife. The same reviewer mentioned hearing barred owls at night, adding to the wilderness experience. They also noted a significant presence of ticks, even after treating their dog with flea and tick medication before the trip, advising others to "definitely" adjust accordingly. This suggests that campers should take precautions against ticks.

Despite some of the challenges, such as the hike in and the lack of amenities, the overall sentiment seems to lean towards a quiet and natural camping experience. One reviewer explicitly stated it's a "quiet campsite." Another mentioned that someone had created an alternate fire pit, perhaps indicating a community of users who appreciate the location despite its lack of official maintenance.

Regarding services or features, beyond the fire ring and the potentially dilapidated picnic table(s), there are no mentioned facilities like restrooms or water spigots. The primary features are the natural setting, the access to the Florida Trail, and the sense of seclusion. It's also noted that the campsite is free but needs to be reserved on the SWFWMD website, indicating a system for managing use, even though it's a primitive site.

There is no specific promotional information provided in the reviews. However, the fact that it's a free campsite and offers a backcountry experience in the Green Swamp Wilderness Preserve could be seen as its primary appeal. For local users seeking a more rugged and nature-focused "camping near me" option, the SWFWMD Mott Hammock Camp provides an opportunity to immerse themselves in the Florida wilderness, provided they are prepared for the conditions.

In conclusion, SWFWMD Mott Hammock Camp near Lakeland offers a free, backcountry camping experience that requires a hike in, with distances of 5.3 miles from Rockridge Road or 8.7 miles from County Road 471. It's a quiet and secluded site within the Green Swamp Wilderness Preserve, accessible from the Florida Trail. Amenities are minimal, with a fire ring and potentially unstable picnic tables. Campers must be self-sufficient, carrying in all supplies and carrying out all waste. Awareness of hunting seasons and the prevalence of ticks are important considerations. If you are a local user looking for a more adventurous and natural "camping near me" experience, and you are prepared for backcountry conditions, Mott Hammock Camp may be worth reserving through the SWFWMD website.
