Temperance River Campground Introduce
For local users searching for "camping near me" along Minnesota's scenic North Shore, Temperance River Campground, located on Sawbill Trail, Tofte, MN 55615, USA, offers a rustic option within the Superior National Forest. With phone contact available at (218) 626-4300 or +1 218-626-4300, this small campground provides basic amenities and convenient access to the natural beauty of the area. Based on recent customer reviews, Temperance River Campground presents a mix of appealing features and some considerations for those seeking a peaceful camping experience.
The environment surrounding Temperance River Campground is undoubtedly a major draw. Situated on the Sawbill Trail in Tofte, it is likely nestled within the forests of the North Shore, known for its rugged terrain, proximity to Lake Superior, and numerous inland lakes and rivers. The campground's name suggests its close proximity to the Temperance River, offering potential access for scenic viewing and perhaps recreational activities. The area is also known for its hiking trails, providing opportunities for exploring the natural beauty of the Superior National Forest. One review mentions the campground being "close and convenient to many trails and the river is right there," highlighting this advantageous location for outdoor enthusiasts searching for "camping near me" with access to hiking and water features.
In terms of services and features, reviews indicate a rustic camping experience. One reviewer noted a "clean outhouse and access to potable water," which are essential amenities for a comfortable stay in a more primitive setting. The cost was mentioned as "$18 a night" in both reviews, suggesting an affordable option for camping in the area. The small size of the campground, with only "8 or 9 sites," implies a more intimate camping experience, though it might also mean limited availability. Bear warnings are present, necessitating careful food storage in vehicles or hard-walled campers, and even advising covering coolers in vehicles due to bears recognizing them as potential food sources. One reviewer also mentioned the presence of a "little chipmunk" as a regular visitor, adding a touch of wildlife charm.
However, the reviews also point out some potential drawbacks. One camper noted that while the sites are not "super close together," noise from neighbors, such as car doors and conversations, can be easily heard. Furthermore, they experienced a night with "people partying well into the night," which detracted from the peace and quiet. The campground's proximity to a "gravel road which can be pretty busy" also results in "road noise." Therefore, while the location offers natural beauty and access to trails and the river, those prioritizing absolute peace and quiet might find this campground less ideal.
Considering the "camping near me" category, Temperance River Campground offers a budget-friendly ($18/night) and conveniently located option for exploring the Tofte area and the Superior National Forest. The presence of potable water and a clean outhouse provides basic comfort. The small number of sites might appeal to those who prefer a less crowded campground, but it also suggests the need to book in advance, although booking information is not provided in the reviews. The bear warnings are an important feature to note, requiring campers to be diligent about food storage to ensure safety.
Promotional information is limited to the details gleaned from the reviews, such as the affordable price and the proximity to natural attractions. The quiet atmosphere was noted by one reviewer, while the other experienced noise issues, suggesting that the level of tranquility might vary depending on fellow campers and road traffic. The charm of local wildlife, like the chipmunk, could also be seen as a minor promotional point for nature lovers.
For local users searching for "camping near me" in the Tofte area who are comfortable with a rustic setting and are primarily interested in access to hiking trails and the Temperance River, this campground could be a viable option, especially given its affordability. However, potential campers should be aware of the possibility of noise from other campers and the nearby road. The bear safety precautions are also crucial to consider.
In summary, Temperance River Campground in Tofte, MN, offers a small, rustic camping experience for $18 per night. It features a clean outhouse, potable water, and convenient access to trails and the Temperance River. The environment is within the scenic Superior National Forest, but campers should be prepared for potential noise from neighbors and a nearby gravel road. Bear safety is a significant consideration. For those seeking "camping near me" who prioritize location and affordability over guaranteed peace and quiet, Temperance River Campground is worth considering. Contacting them at (218) 626-4300 or +1 218-626-4300 might provide more details on availability and specific site features.
If you are looking for a budget-friendly "camping near me" option in the Tofte area with access to nature, Temperance River Campground could be a good fit. Just be mindful of the potential for noise and the need for proper food storage due to bear activity. The small size might also mean it fills up quickly, so reaching out via phone to inquire about availability would be a prudent step in your camping plans.

Temperance River Campground Reviews
The campground was very quiet with a clean outhouse and access to potable water. It was only $18 a night. There are bear warnings around so keep your food in a car, truck or secure hard walled camper and it says to cover your coolers in your vehicle because the bears know what they look like and will try to get to it if the bears see them...There was a little chipmunk that visited every morning, afternoon and evening during my four days I was there and was very cute.
Aug 01, 2022 · Robert PelkeySmall with only 8 or 9 sites. $18 per night. Rustic with one outhouse. Sites are not super close together, but you will hear your neighbor every time they open a car door or laugh. One of our two night here people were up partying well into the night. Close to the gravel road which can be pretty busy, so road noise. If you want privacy are real.peace and quiet this spot may disappoint you. Close and convenient to many trails and the river is right there.
Sep 21, 2021 · Lee WitteThis place stinks, don't go here! Ok I'm being selfish...I don't want you to all flock there. Just spent two great nights here. Website said campground was in winter non-fee status and would be unplowed. Pleasantly the main drag was plowed, but the banks were pretty high. Also found the vault toilet door unlocked and useable. Lots of snow! Dug out our fire pit, setup camp. Fell asleep to the Temperance running next to us. We could hear a couple of vehicles pass the campground that were on the Sawbill but not bad at all.One nice thing is that this campground is right at the end of the blacktop on the Sawbill. Roads were clear all the way up to it.We had set out to stay at Baker Lake but drove and drove and could never find signage so we turned back. This was a great option for winter camping!!
Mar 27, 2017 · Seth JohnsonOff the beaten path, this was the perfect "roughing it" campground. Just steps from the Temperance River, the sound of the flowing water made for an easy sleep. Fresh water spigot and pit toilet were the only amenities. My dog and I had a great time.
Aug 20, 2019 · Alexander F Holmes IIITemperance River Campground is a hidden gem just a few miles back from the North Shore. A great place to camp while you explore the Temperance river area/Tofte region.
