Three Frogs Campground Introduce
For local adventurers searching for "camping near me" that offers a serene escape into nature, Three Frogs Campground presents an appealing option nestled within the picturesque Bitterroot National Forest near Darby, Montana (address: Darby, MT 59829, USA). Based on recent reviews from fellow campers, Three Frogs offers a unique first-come, first-served experience in a beautiful setting.
One enthusiastic camper described it as a "beautiful setting in the Bitterroot National forest" and appreciated its proximity to Lake Como. They noted the presence of another campground, Lake Como CG, located below the dam offering electric and water hookups, while Three Frogs itself is a "dry camping" area situated just up the road, within walking distance of the lake. This suggests that Three Frogs caters to those who prefer a more rustic camping experience while still enjoying easy access to the recreational opportunities of Lake Como.
The reviewer also highlighted the availability of sites during their visit in August 2023, indicating that even without reservations, you might find a spot. They found the campsites to be "very nice for tents, smaller trailers or vans," specifically mentioning sites #2 and #21 as being "spacious & flat." This is valuable information for locals planning a trip, suggesting that certain sites might be more suitable depending on your camping equipment.
A significant positive aspect mentioned was the helpfulness and friendliness of the camp host, Nancy. The reviewer also noted the affordability, having paid only $7.50 per night with their lifetime National Parks pass (the regular rate was $15 at the time). This potential for cost savings with a parks pass makes Three Frogs an even more attractive option for local users who might already possess one.
For those looking to explore beyond the campground, the reviewer highly recommends the "6 mile RT easy trail to the waterfall along the lake," as well as opportunities for paddling or taking a refreshing dip in Lake Como. This underscores the recreational value of the location, offering more than just a place to camp but also access to hiking and water activities.
Another camper shared their experience, noting a possible discrepancy in online listings but confirming that "three frogs is the lake como campground" as it was the only one open during their visit. They described it as a "beautiful and small campground set in ponderosa pine forest with sites going up to 21." This reinforces the natural charm of the area, characterized by the surrounding pine forest. They also pointed out that there are "about 4 tent only sites with a short walk in and the rest were right off the road," providing options for different camping preferences. Their tent site, #7, was described as "secluded on a patch of high ground in the middle of the loop," which could be appealing to those seeking more privacy.
This reviewer also mentioned the presence of local wildlife, with "lots of squirrels and chipmunks running around the campground area," adding to the natural ambiance. They echoed the positive sentiment about the camp host, describing them as "extra nice" and mentioning their "adorable little dog in a baby carrier." While they noted that the lake is somewhat visible from parts of the campground, they characterized the overall setting as "more of a forest setting," which might appeal to those who prefer camping among the trees.
Combining these reviews, Three Frogs Campground appears to be an excellent choice for local users seeking "camping near me" that offers a blend of natural beauty and recreational access. Its key features include:
- A beautiful setting in the Bitterroot National Forest.
- Close proximity and walking distance to Lake Como, offering opportunities for hiking, paddling, and swimming.
- First-come, first-served campsites suitable for tents, smaller trailers, or vans.
- Some spacious and flat sites, such as #2 and #21.
- Potential for discounted rates with a National Parks pass.
- A helpful and friendly camp host.

For local residents looking for a spontaneous camping trip in a scenic location, the first-come, first-served nature of Three Frogs could be ideal. You can simply head out and try to secure a site, especially if you have flexibility in your travel dates. The affordability, particularly with a National Parks pass, makes it an accessible option for many.
The proximity to Lake Como enhances the appeal, providing opportunities for outdoor activities beyond just camping. Whether you enjoy a leisurely hike to a waterfall, a peaceful paddle on the lake, or a refreshing swim, the location offers something for everyone. The descriptions of the campground as being set in a ponderosa pine forest further paint a picture of a tranquil and natural environment, perfect for unwinding and reconnecting with nature.
For local users in the "camping near me" category, Three Frogs Campground in the Bitterroot National Forest stands out as a potentially rewarding destination. Its combination of natural beauty, access to Lake Como, and positive feedback regarding the camp host make it a strong contender for your next outdoor adventure. Remember that it is a dry camping facility, so plan accordingly for your water and power needs. However, the overall experience seems to be well worth it for those seeking a more traditional and nature-focused camping trip close to home.

Three Frogs Campground Reviews
I loved this first come-first serve campground ! What a beautiful setting in the Bitterroot National forest. There is a lower, paved campground (Lake Como CG) below the dam with electric & water, but Three Frogs ( dry camping) is just up the road from it & walking distance to Lake Como. There seemed to be available sites. The sites are very nice for tents, smaller trailers or vans. Site #'s 2 & 21 were spacious & flat. The camp host , Nancy, was so helpful & nice. I paid only $7.50 per night with my lifetime National Parks pass ( normally $15). It is definitely worth hiking the 6 mile RT easy trail to the waterfall along the lake, or going for a paddle or refreshing dip in the lake. (August 2023).
Aug 23, 2023 · Carol ParkinsonFirst off I'm not sure what's up with the different listings here but it seems that three frogs is the lake como campground. I mean I went there and there was only one campground open and it was three frogs so I'll leave my review here. This is a beautiful and small campground set in ponderosa pine forest with sites going up to 21. There's about 4 tent only sites with a short walk in and the rest were right off the road. My tent sites was #7 and it was secluded on a patch of high ground in the middle of the loop. There were lots of squirrels and chipmunks running around the campground area. The camp host was extra nice and had an adorable little dog in a baby carrier. You can somewhat see the lake from parts of the campground but it's more of a forest setting.
Jul 23, 2020 · Bill FranklinTwo stars only for the beautiful views. If I could rate the camp host negative stars I would. We arrived at the day use area and got out of the car to pay parking fees. This camp host walks up to my car and starts taking pictures of my license plate. I asked her what she was doing. She stated my dog needed to be leashed. I agreed with her, put the envelope in the drop box and leashed my dog. 3 hours later we return from the falls to find 4 rangers waiting at the trailhead to ticket me (who has dog on leash). Will stay even further away from this Karen in the future.
Jul 04, 2024 · Kayla RoundyQuiet and spacious spots with a picnic table and fire ring. There was a beautiful lake and offroad trails very close. The restrooms were clean and overstocked with toilet paper. Our dog enjoyed this spot as there was plenty of wildlife for him to watch.
Jun 23, 2024 · johnny weedonWe stayed here for just one night in early October 2022. The place is beautiful! It has 17 large sites and 5 sites for tents. We could have put out 29ft travel trailer in just about any of the regular sites. Because it was off season there was no fee charged! They still had trash service and you could use the pit toilets but the water was turned off because it can get pretty cold at night this time of year.Beautiful trail around lake Komo. We'll stay here again some time. Really liked the setting.
