According to a recent visitor, "If you are looking to get away from it all you have found the place," highlighting its secluded location. This suggests that the campground offers a peaceful atmosphere, far from the noise and congestion of urban areas. The same reviewer also noted that it's "pretty much an hour to get anywhere," emphasizing its location as a true escape into nature. A significant feature of Thunder River Campground is its proximity to the river. One reviewer enthusiastically mentioned being "right on the river," suggesting that many campsites likely offer direct access to the water. This opens up opportunities for various riverside activities such as fishing, wading, or simply enjoying the soothing sounds of the flowing water. The presence of the river enhances the natural ambiance of the campground and provides a picturesque backdrop for your camping experience.
The campsites themselves appear to be a strong positive aspect of Thunder River Campground. A reviewer described them as "very nice campsites" and, even more appealingly, "huge lots." Spacious campsites are a valuable asset, offering campers more room for tents, equipment, and enjoying their outdoor space without feeling cramped. This is particularly beneficial for families or groups who require more area to set up and relax comfortably. The availability of large lots contributes to a more enjoyable and less crowded camping experience.
In terms of facilities, Thunder River Campground seems to prioritize cleanliness and service. One reviewer specifically mentioned "very clean restrooms and showers," which is a crucial factor for many campers. Clean and well-maintained facilities significantly enhance the overall camping experience and contribute to a more comfortable stay. Additionally, the hosts at Thunder River Campground are praised for their helpfulness and kindness. The reviewer stated, "Hosts are very helpful and kind," indicating a welcoming and supportive atmosphere provided by the campground staff. This personal touch can make a significant difference in the overall satisfaction of campers.
While the reviews are overwhelmingly positive, one camper did mention a specific policy regarding multiple tents: "Only slight issue we had was having more than 1 tent, we ended up getting charged for two sites." This suggests that the campground may have a policy where each tent requires a separate site fee. Local users planning to camp with multiple tents should be aware of this potential charge and it would be prudent to clarify the policy when making reservations or upon arrival by contacting them at (276) 244-7477 or +1 276-244-7477.
For those who enjoy outdoor activities beyond traditional camping, Thunder River Campground appears to be well-suited. The reviewer who noted the remote location also mentioned it being "Perfect if you love nature and like to go exploring or riding side-by-sides." This suggests that the area surrounding the campground offers opportunities for off-road vehicle enthusiasts to enjoy side-by-side riding. Additionally, the general mention of loving nature and exploring implies the presence of trails or natural areas suitable for hiking and other outdoor adventures. The campground serves as a convenient basecamp for those looking to engage in these activities within the local area.
Wildlife enthusiasts will also appreciate Thunder River Campground. One reviewer noted "plenty of wildlife," indicating that the natural environment surrounding the campground is rich in animal life. This could provide opportunities for wildlife viewing and photography, adding another layer of enjoyment to your camping experience. However, as with any area with abundant wildlife, it's important for campers to be mindful of safety precautions and respect the natural habitat.
Finally, a crucial piece of information for local users planning to visit Thunder River Campground, especially those with larger vehicles, is the nature of the access roads. One reviewer cautioned, "Now having said all that you need to be comfortable driving mountain roads there are definitely some curvy twisty roads." They further mentioned, "we have a 45ft coach but my husband is very confident so he handled it well just wanted to give a heads up..." This is an important consideration for RV owners or those towing trailers. While the campground is accessible, the mountain roads leading to it may be challenging for less experienced drivers or very large vehicles. It is advisable for local users to consider the size of their vehicle and their comfort level with mountain driving when planning their trip to Thunder River Campground.

Oct 06, 2023 · Kelly mcgregorVicky and family treated me like family, I was riding bike on the trans American route and in need of a place to set up my tent. A local recommended Thunder River campground, beautiful place right next to the river! Super clean bathrooms/Bathhouses, I honestly felt kinda sad leaving. I highly recommend this campground for your bike riding and atv trail needs! Thank you so much!
Jul 05, 2022 · Ronald MGreat camping spot. Restrooms and showers are extremely clean. They both have fans and have febreezes going on so it smells nice all the time. The Campground also miraculously has wifi which is helpful due to the lack of signal in the area. Hosts were super relaxed and nice.
Aug 22, 2022 · Rene NunezHidden gem. Really nice place to come and get away from it all and enjoy sounds of the river and relax. Really convenient to the town of haysi, and spearhead trails for atv adventure. You should definitely give it a try if your looking for a unique adventure.
