Looking for "camping near me" that serves as the perfect basecamp for your outdoor adventures, particularly if you're planning to explore the Anthracite Outdoor Adventure Area (AOAA)? Trailhead Campground, located at 4086 PA-125, Coal Township, PA 17866, offers a camping experience with a focus on accessibility to local trails and a friendly atmosphere. You can reach them at (570) 495-4453 or their mobile number +1 570-495-4453 for inquiries and bookings. Based on recent customer feedback, Trailhead Campground provides a nice overall camping environment with particularly strong points in its staff and proximity to AOAA, while also presenting some areas for potential improvement.
The location of Trailhead Campground in Coal Township, Pennsylvania, positions it conveniently for those interested in exploring the surrounding natural attractions, most notably the Anthracite Outdoor Adventure Area. This makes it an ideal choice for local users who are avid off-road vehicle enthusiasts, hikers, or anyone looking to experience the rugged beauty of the region. The environment around Coal Township is characterized by its history in anthracite coal mining, which has left behind a unique landscape of varied terrain, including hills, forests, and reclaimed mining areas that now form the AOAA trail system. Campers at Trailhead Campground can expect to be immersed in this distinctive landscape, offering a blend of natural beauty and industrial heritage.
Based on the reviews, the services and features at Trailhead Campground lean towards a more primitive camping experience, although with some appreciated amenities and a focus on safety and order. One of the key features highlighted is the strict enforcement of a 5 mph speed limit within the campground. This is a significant positive, as it effectively minimizes dust and noise, contributing to a more pleasant and safer environment for all campers, especially families with children. This rule demonstrates a commitment to the comfort and well-being of their guests.
The staff at Trailhead Campground consistently receive high praise for their friendliness and helpfulness. One reviewer specifically mentioned a staff member delivering wood and even offering assistance with starting a fire, showcasing a proactive and accommodating approach. Another review echoed this sentiment, noting that the staff is friendly and helpful, further enhancing the overall camping experience. This positive interaction with the staff can significantly contribute to a welcoming and supportive atmosphere for local campers.
Given that one reviewer "knew it was primitive camping going into it," it's important for potential local users to understand that the facilities might be basic. This suggests that amenities such as flush toilets, showers, and wash stations might be limited or not readily available at all campsites. One camper expressed a desire to see wash stations and facilities added in the future, indicating that these are currently lacking or insufficient. Therefore, campers planning a stay at Trailhead Campground should be prepared for a more rustic experience and potentially bring their own provisions for hygiene and sanitation.
Navigation within the campground appears to be an area that could be improved. Multiple reviewers mentioned difficulties in finding their way around, especially upon initial arrival and after dark. The lack of sufficient signage was specifically noted as a hindrance. One reviewer suggested that more signs would be helpful for first-time visitors. While one camper did observe staff guiding people to their spots after dark, which is a commendable service, the general lack of signage could still pose a challenge for independent navigation, particularly in low light conditions. Local users unfamiliar with the campground should be prepared for this potential difficulty and perhaps arrive during daylight hours if possible.
Despite the primitive nature, Trailhead Campground is highly regarded as a "Great place to camp while riding at AOAA." This strong endorsement from users who are there specifically to access the off-road trails highlights a key feature and primary draw of the campground: its convenient location for AOAA visitors. For local residents who enjoy off-roading and are looking for nearby camping, Trailhead Campground serves as an excellent and practical option.
The campground also has "reasonable and easy to follow" rules, which are enforced to ensure the safety and enjoyment of all guests and to help maintain the campground's operational status. This indicates a management team that prioritizes a positive and orderly environment for everyone.
One reviewer mentioned that they will "book the group site again soon," suggesting that Trailhead Campground offers group camping options. This is a valuable feature for local users planning camping trips with larger parties, such as families or groups of friends, especially those visiting AOAA together. The availability of a group site allows for a more communal camping experience.
Currently, there is no specific promotional information available in the provided reviews. Local users interested in potential discounts, group rates, or any special offers at Trailhead Campground should contact them directly via phone at (570) 495-4453 or +1 570-495-4453. Inquiring about the availability of wash facilities, the layout of the campground, and any specific amenities for primitive camping will also be beneficial when planning your stay.
In conclusion, Trailhead Campground offers a conveniently located camping option for local users, particularly those visiting the Anthracite Outdoor Adventure Area. The campground is praised for its friendly and helpful staff, enforcement of a 5 mph speed limit for safety and comfort, and reasonable rules. While it is primarily a primitive camping experience with potentially limited facilities like toilets and wash stations, and navigation could be challenging due to a lack of signage, its proximity to AOAA and the availability of a group site make it a strong choice for off-road enthusiasts and larger groups. Local users should be prepared for a more rustic camping experience and consider contacting the campground directly for more details on amenities and any current promotions.

Trailhead Campground Reviews
Overall the campground is nice. They enforce a 5mph speed limit which helps cut down on dust and noise. The staff were super friendly. I’d like to see a few more toilets added. A few more signs would be helpful as well, we found it very hard to navigate our first time in. Once it got dark, I did see staff guiding people to their spots which was great. This place would be very hard to navigate at night especially with the lack of signage.I knew it was primitive camping going into it. Of course would love to see some wash stations a facilities added at some point.
Sep 21, 2024 · AJ EschleGreat place to camp while riding at AOAA, Staff is friendly and helpful. We had one of the staff deliver some wood and help start a fire. (not that I needed help, :) ) Their rules are reasonable and easy to follow so everyone has a safe time and the place stays open. We will book the group site again soon.
May 06, 2024 · Matthew WalterOne of the best Father's day weekends yet with my son! Awesome camping, great trails at aoaa, great service, friendly staff and other campers as well!
Jun 18, 2023 · Frank GattoLoved it, perfect for an over night trip. No electric or water, but we were prepared. A single tent site was 20 dollars plus another 5 for a bundle of wood. Everyone was friendly. And you can ride from the site right to AOAA and ride.
Aug 04, 2018 · Saprina RouseAlways enjoy our time here except when generators run ALL day and ALL NIGHT since the tent sites are primitive! No bathrooms, water, electric (except at RV sites) or wash stations for your bikes/ATV/side by side ! Besides that we love coming here
