The environment of Trough Creek State Park Campground is characterized by its quiet and serene atmosphere. The smaller size of the campground contributes to a more intimate and less crowded feel, allowing visitors to truly connect with nature. The surrounding area boasts natural beauty, providing a picturesque backdrop for your camping adventure. While specific details about the types of campsites (e.g., tent-only, RV sites with hookups) are not explicitly mentioned in the provided information, the positive reviews suggest that the grounds are well-maintained, indicating a level of care and attention to the camping facilities available.
One of the standout features of Trough Creek State Park Campground is its exceptional access to stream fishing and hiking trails directly from the campground. This eliminates the need to drive to separate trailheads or fishing spots, offering unparalleled convenience for outdoor enthusiasts. Imagine waking up and stepping right onto a hiking trail or casting your line into a nearby stream within moments. This direct access truly enhances the camping experience for those who enjoy these activities. The proximity to Raystown Lake also opens up opportunities for paddle sports, adding another dimension of recreational activities available to campers.
While the reviews highlight many positives, it's important to note a few considerations for potential visitors. The road leading to and from the campground is described as narrow, with sections wide enough for only one direction of travel. While one reviewer noted no oncoming camper traffic, they did mention that personal vehicle traffic can be heavy on nice days. Campers should exercise caution while navigating this road, particularly with larger vehicles or trailers. Additionally, the dump station is located a few miles away at the park office. This means that using a sludge caddy for waste disposal might not be practical unless you have a truck bed for hauling. Tent campers should also be aware that water availability at the campsites may be limited, as one review mentioned a period with no water available for tent sites.
Despite these considerations, Trough Creek State Park Campground offers several appealing services and features. The well-maintained grounds ensure a pleasant camping environment. The direct access to stream fishing and hiking is a significant draw for nature lovers and outdoor adventurers. The proximity to Raystown Lake expands the recreational possibilities to include paddle sports. For families, the occasional ranger-led activities, such as a movie night for kids on Saturdays, can add an extra element of fun and community to the camping experience.
For local users searching within the 'camping near me' category, Trough Creek State Park Campground presents a fantastic option for a weekend getaway or a longer outdoor excursion. Its location in James Creek, PA, makes it easily accessible for residents in the surrounding areas. The combination of a peaceful environment, direct access to natural attractions like streams and hiking trails, and the nearby Raystown Lake for water activities provides a diverse range of experiences for different types of campers. Whether you are an avid angler, a hiking enthusiast, or simply seeking a tranquil spot to relax in nature, Trough Creek State Park Campground has something to offer.

Trough Creek State Park Campground Reviews
Nice and quiet. Smaller side campground, but we'll maintained.Excellent access to stream fishing and walk out of the campground hiking, no need to drive. The road to enter and exist is narrow, with some places wide enough for only one direction of travel in the section. We experienced no on coming camper traffic but POV traffic is heavy on nice days.Dump station is located at park office a few miles away, so sludge caddy may not be very practical for anything other than truck bed hauling.

Jul 27, 2024 · Travis PidcockWe camped here was so beautiful and quiet we had beautiful bike rides and hikes.just extremely glad we didn't have to pass any other vehicles in or out very narrow road to camping area and usable water would have been nice
May 11, 2023 · Carla ShockLook. As state parks go, this is a good one.Trough Creek won’t blow you away or become a national park, but it’s a solid place with all the amenities you expect for car camping in a state park. Nearby hikes, cool natural features; it’s everything you can expect from a state park.
