Underhill Site Introduce

For local users searching for "camping near me," Underhill Site, located off Dufur Valley Rd in Dufur, OR 97021, USA, presents a very basic and somewhat unusual camping option. You can reach them by phone at (541) 467-2291 or +1 541-467-2291. Based on online reviews, Underhill Site is not a typical, well-established campground but rather a "scruffy, seemingly much-ignored patch right off the Dufur Valley Road." It notably does not have an official sign and reportedly does not appear on the Forest Service website's list of campgrounds, adding to its somewhat unofficial nature.

The environment around Underhill Site is described as having "not many trees, no nearby body of water (at the immediate site), no privacy and no particularly compelling views." This suggests a relatively open area with limited natural screening between campsites. However, its proximity to the Underhill Trail is a significant environmental feature. One reviewer hiked the Underhill Trail from the site, noting that nature is reclaiming it with blowdowns, overgrown sections, and a narrow path. They also mentioned an old, ramshackle structure near Ramsey Creek before the bridge, indicating some level of natural and possibly historical elements in the vicinity.

In terms of services, Underhill Site is quite basic. There is a vaulted toilet available. However, one reviewer noted that when they visited, the lock was broken, and the steel door had bullet holes. Despite this, they found it to be a clean facility with a lined trash can inside, suggesting some level of maintenance occurs. There are reportedly "3 camp spots" and a covered area located right off of Dufur Valley Road. The covered area contains a "massive picnic table" inside and a "seriously burned-out wood stove that no one should even think of using." There is no mention of potable water or other standard campground amenities.

Features of Underhill Site are limited but notable. Its primary draw appears to be its function as a trailhead for the Underhill Trail. The trail itself, while somewhat challenging due to its condition, offers an opportunity for hiking with an elevation gain of over 500 feet in about 4.4 miles, according to one hiker's recorded activity. The presence of the covered area with a picnic table could be considered a feature, providing some shelter. Perhaps the most significant feature, as highlighted by one reviewer, is that camping at Underhill Site is free.

Given its lack of official recognition and basic facilities, Underhill Site is presented by one reviewer as a "fallback-fallback-fallback option"—a place to pitch a tent if other nearby campgrounds like Eightmile, Lower Eightmile, Pebble Ford, Knebal Springs, and Fifteenmile are full, and if one is not prepared for dispersed camping. This context helps to frame the expectations for this site. It's not a destination campground with amenities but rather a very rudimentary spot that happens to be located at the start of a trail.

For local users looking for "camping near me," Underhill Site might appeal to those who prioritize free camping and access to the Underhill Trail over developed facilities and scenic campsites. Hikers planning to explore the Underhill Trail might find it a convenient, albeit basic, place to spend the night. However, potential campers should be prepared for a lack of privacy, minimal shade, no immediate water source at the campsite, and the potentially unmaintained condition of the toilet facilities.

There is no promotional information available for Underhill Site, likely due to its unofficial and very basic nature. The fact that it's free might be considered an implicit draw for budget-conscious campers. However, the reviews strongly suggest that campers should have low expectations regarding amenities and the overall camping environment.

In summary, Underhill Site near Dufur, Oregon, is a very rudimentary and seemingly unofficial "camping near me" option that offers free camping and access to the Underhill Trail. It features a vaulted toilet (potentially in poor condition), three campsites, and a covered area with a picnic table and a unusable wood stove. The environment is described as open with few trees and no notable views from the immediate site. Its primary appeal is its functionality as a trailhead and its lack of camping fees, making it a last-resort option for some. Local users seeking a no-frills, free camping spot primarily for accessing the Underhill Trail might consider it, but they should be prepared for basic conditions and a lack of standard campground amenities.
