Pretty good campground the main downsides are the roads getting to it and the lack of shade. Thethe hiking trails are ok but not that special and fishing there is only allowed in very small creeks that are almost dry. The upsides are the views and lack of other people. Watching the sunset was amazing and you can see so many stars at night due to the lack of light pollution anywhere near by. - jorge chavez

Upper Lake Campground - Red Rock Lakes NWR Introduce

For local users seeking a more rustic and secluded "camping near me" experience, Upper Lake Campground, nestled within the Red Rock Lakes National Wildlife Refuge near Lima, Montana, offers a unique opportunity to connect with nature. Situated in a protected area renowned for its wildlife and scenic beauty, this primitive campground provides a tranquil escape, albeit with certain considerations for access and amenities. Based on available information, including customer reviews, this introduction aims to provide a detailed overview of what you can expect at Upper Lake Campground.

Located in the heart of the Red Rock Lakes National Wildlife Refuge, Upper Lake Campground promises an environment rich in natural beauty. The refuge itself is known for its stunning landscapes, including pristine lakes, wetlands, and surrounding mountains. Campers can anticipate breathtaking views, particularly of the sunset over the lake, as highlighted by a visitor. The lack of significant light pollution in this remote area also creates exceptional opportunities for stargazing, allowing for truly awe-inspiring night skies.

However, the environment also presents some challenges. One reviewer notes the "lack of shade" at the campground, which could be a significant factor during hot summer months. Campers should come prepared with adequate sun protection. Additionally, another camper mentions that the "roads getting to it" are a "main downside," suggesting that access might be challenging and potentially unsuitable for all types of vehicles. It is advisable to inquire about road conditions before planning your trip, especially if you are driving a larger RV or a vehicle with low clearance.

Upper Lake Campground is described as a "nice little primitive campground" with approximately 12 sites. This implies a more intimate and less crowded camping experience, aligning with the upside mentioned by a reviewer about the "lack of other people," contributing to a sense of solitude and immersion in nature. Some of these sites are reportedly suitable for smaller RVs, though the specific size limitations are not detailed and should be confirmed with the managing authorities.

In terms of services and features, Upper Lake Campground offers basic amenities typical of a primitive camping experience:

  • **Vault Toilet:** The presence of a vault toilet indicates a basic sanitation facility. Campers should be prepared as this is a non-flush toilet.
  • **Bear Proof Lockers:** The inclusion of bear-proof lockers is a crucial feature in this wildlife refuge, emphasizing the need for proper food storage to ensure the safety of both campers and wildlife.
  • **Fire Rings:** Each campsite is equipped with a fire ring, allowing for campfires (subject to local fire regulations and restrictions).
  • **Picnic Tables:** Campers can expect a picnic table at their site for eating and other outdoor activities.
  • **Fresh Water:** A notable feature is the mention of "fresh water coming out of a pipe on the hillside," providing a potential source of drinking water. However, it is always recommended to purify any natural water sources before consumption.
  • **Canoe Launch:** The campground offers a "steep ramp down to the lake for canoe launch," making it an appealing destination for those interested in paddling on Upper Lake.
  • **No Trash Cans:** The absence of trash cans signifies a "pack it in, pack it out" policy. Campers are responsible for removing all their trash and leaving no trace.

Recreational opportunities directly mentioned in the reviews are somewhat limited. While there are "hiking trails," one reviewer found them "ok but not that special." Fishing is described as being "only allowed in very small creeks that are almost dry," suggesting that Upper Lake itself might have restrictions on fishing or that the fishing opportunities in the immediate vicinity are not a primary draw. However, the proximity to Red Rock Lakes National Wildlife Refuge implies potential for wildlife viewing, especially of the refuge's namesake trumpeter swans and other waterfowl.

Promotional information is not provided in the context. As a primitive campground within a National Wildlife Refuge, the primary appeal of Upper Lake Campground is its natural setting and the opportunity for a secluded outdoor experience. There are likely no specific promotional offers, but the relatively low cost associated with primitive camping in such areas can be considered an inherent value.

For local users searching for "camping near me" who value tranquility, stunning views, and a more self-sufficient camping style, Upper Lake Campground in Red Rock Lakes National Wildlife Refuge presents an attractive option. The lack of crowds and exceptional stargazing are significant upsides. However, potential campers must be aware of the challenges, including potentially difficult road access and the lack of shade. The limited hiking and fishing opportunities directly at the campground might also influence some visitors' decisions. The primitive nature of the campground means campers need to be well-prepared with their own supplies and be committed to Leave No Trace principles.

To obtain the most current information about Upper Lake Campground, including road conditions, campsite availability, fees, and any specific regulations, it is crucial to contact the managing authorities directly. The provided phone numbers, (406) 276-3536 and the mobile number +1 406-276-3536, offer a means to reach out and gather essential details before planning your visit to this unique and potentially rewarding primitive camping destination within the Red Rock Lakes National Wildlife Refuge.
