Location and Environment: Situated in the scenic Island Park area of Idaho, Buttermilk Campground benefits from the region's stunning natural surroundings. While the specific details of the immediate environment aren't extensively described in the provided reviews, Island Park is known for its picturesque landscapes, including forests, rivers, and lakes. The reviews highlight the campground's proximity to a lake, which serves as a central point for many of its recreational activities and contributes to the overall appeal of the location. The natural beauty of Idaho provides a backdrop for a relaxing and enjoyable camping experience at Buttermilk Campground.
Services and Amenities: Buttermilk Campground has seen significant improvements in its amenities, making it an even more attractive option for campers. For the 2024 season, the campground introduced new vault toilets, which have been positively reviewed for their cleanliness. This upgrade addresses a fundamental need for campers and enhances the overall comfort and hygiene of the camping experience. Additionally, new fire pits and a new utility table were installed at each campsite, providing added convenience for cooking and organizing belongings. Looking ahead, new picnic tables are reportedly planned for the 2025 season, which will further enhance the functionality and comfort of each campsite. The availability of camp hosts who are described as friendly and very helpful adds another layer of positive service, ensuring that campers have assistance and information readily available during their stay.
Features and Activities: One of the standout features of Buttermilk Campground, as highlighted by a visitor who attended a family reunion there, is the impressive array of recreational activities and amenities available. Unlike a traditional, more basic campground experience, Buttermilk offers a "Fun For All Ages!" atmosphere. A major draw is the access to lake-related activities, including jet ski and boat rentals, providing opportunities for exciting water sports and leisurely exploration of the lake. The presence of a "wonderful restaurant and bar" with outdoor seating offers a convenient option for meals and socializing, adding a unique dimension to the camping experience. For families with children, the inclusion of bounce houses and water islands suggests a focus on providing entertainment and fun for younger campers. These diverse features make Buttermilk Campground a destination that caters to a wide range of interests, from adventurous water sports enthusiasts to those seeking relaxation and family-friendly activities.
Campsite Information and Availability: Buttermilk Campground offers a mix of reserved and first-come-first-serve campsites to accommodate different planning preferences. Sites numbered 27 through 46 within the Buttermilk Loop B section are designated as reserved sites, which can be booked in advance through platforms like recreation.gov. However, a significant portion of the campground, approximately 60% of the total 56 sites (sites 1 through 26 and 47 through 56), operates on a first-come-first-serve basis. This is a crucial piece of information for local users who might be planning a more spontaneous camping trip. Despite the recreation.gov website potentially showing the reserved sites as fully booked, a reviewer indicates a high likelihood (99% chance) of finding a first-come-first-serve site available. This suggests that even during busy periods, there's a good chance for walk-in campers to secure a spot. Furthermore, the majority of the campsites are described as pull-through sites, which is particularly convenient for RVs and larger vehicles, simplifying the parking and setup process.
Promotional Information and Local Appeal: For local users searching for "camping near me" that offers more than just a basic campsite, Buttermilk Campground presents a compelling option. The combination of traditional camping amenities like new toilets and fire pits with the added attractions of lake access, boat and jet ski rentals, a restaurant and bar, and family-friendly activities like bounce houses and water islands creates a unique and appealing destination. The friendly and helpful camp hosts further enhance the positive experience, making campers feel welcome and supported. The availability of both reserved and a significant number of first-come-first-serve sites provides flexibility for different planning styles. The assurance that first-come-first-serve sites are often available, even when reserved sites are full, is particularly valuable for locals who might decide on a camping trip with less advance notice.
The recent upgrades to the vault toilets, fire pits, and utility tables demonstrate a commitment to improving the campground facilities and enhancing the camper experience. The anticipation of new picnic tables for the 2025 season further underscores this ongoing investment. For families, the "Fun For All Ages!" atmosphere, with activities geared towards both adults and children, makes Buttermilk Campground an ideal location for reunions or simply a weekend getaway. The convenience of having a restaurant and bar on-site can be a significant draw for those who appreciate having dining options readily available without having to leave the campground.
In conclusion, Buttermilk Campground offers a rich and diverse camping experience for local users in the Island Park area. Its blend of natural beauty, essential amenities, recreational activities, and the option of both reserved and first-come-first-serve campsites makes it a versatile choice for various camping needs. Whether you're looking for a relaxing lakeside retreat, an action-packed family adventure with water sports and games, or simply a well-equipped campsite with friendly service, Buttermilk Campground appears to be a destination that delivers on multiple fronts. The ongoing improvements to the facilities further solidify its appeal as a premier "camping near me" option in Island Park, Idaho.

New vault toilets were put in for the 2024 season along with new fire pits and a new utility table at each camp site. New picnic tables a supposed to be coming for the 2025 season. Vault toilets are very clean and camp hosts are the best. They are friendly and very helpful. Sep 23, 2024 · D CookFun For All Ages! We had a family reunion here when our traditional campground was not available. What a wonderful surprise! Jet ski and boat rentals, wonderful restaurant and bar, outdoor seating, bounce houses and water islands, and great service!
Jul 26, 2018 · Peter PamGreat campground right next to the lake and close enough to yellowstone. The campsites are nicely spaced and have enough room for a 26ft camper and long bed truck to menuver into a back in site. This is truly God's country. It makes me want to move to Idaho.
Jun 01, 2021 · Levi McFaddenGreat campground right on the water. Loop A is all first come, first served sites. There a few docks on the lake to tie up to, but they are not adjusted for water levels.
