Upper Moro Campground Introduce
For those searching "Camping Near Me" near Laguna Beach, California, Upper Moro Campground, located in Laguna Beach, CA 92651, USA, offers a primitive camping experience accessible via hiking trails. You can reach them at (800) 444-7275 or via mobile at +1 800-444-7275 for inquiries and reservations, although the reviews suggest this is a more self-service oriented location with limited amenities.
Based on the available customer reviews, Upper Moro Campground is primarily accessed by hiking from a lower parking lot. One reviewer detailed their hike, starting from the lower parking lot and taking the Moro Ridge Spur/Road directly to the Upper Moro Campground. This ascent covered a distance of 3.15 miles with an elevation gain of 974 feet, taking approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes. This description indicates that reaching the campground requires a moderate level of physical exertion and is best suited for backpackers or hikers prepared for a significant trek.
A critical piece of information highlighted in the reviews is the lack of on-site water at the campsites. The first reviewer explicitly advises, "The campsite have no water so take your own." This is a crucial consideration for anyone planning to camp at Upper Moro, emphasizing the need to carry an adequate supply of water for drinking, cooking, and hygiene throughout their stay. The absence of a water source classifies this as a more primitive camping experience requiring greater self-sufficiency.
Regarding restroom facilities, the first reviewer mentions, "They have a outhouse / pit for restroom." This suggests basic, non-flushable toilet facilities are available. The second reviewer corroborated this by stating, "The restroom was dirty and stinky," strongly recommending that campers "bury your poo instead" if they choose to camp there. This feedback raises significant concerns about the cleanliness and maintenance of the provided restroom facilities, suggesting that campers should be prepared for potentially unsanitary conditions or consider alternative waste disposal methods in accordance with Leave No Trace principles.
Both reviewers mention the presence of mosquitoes. The first reviewer describes them as "ruthless anywhere" and was surprised that the higher elevation did not offer respite. They strongly advise taking "measures to prep against mosquitoes," indicating that insect repellent and protective clothing are essential for a comfortable stay, especially during warmer months or near dawn and dusk.
The first reviewer also provides a valuable tip for backpackers, recommending the use of a rainfly on their tents due to the likelihood of fog rolling in and wetting gear. This suggests that the weather conditions at Upper Moro Campground can be influenced by its elevation and proximity to the coast, with fog being a common occurrence that campers should be prepared for.
The second reviewer's initial impression of the campground from the "outside" was "kind of nice," suggesting that the natural setting might be appealing. However, this positive initial impression was quickly overshadowed by the negative experience with the restroom facilities.
Based on these reviews, Upper Moro Campground offers a primitive camping experience that requires preparation and self-sufficiency. The environment is characterized by its accessibility via hiking trails, potential for fog, and the presence of mosquitoes. Essential services are limited, with no on-site water and potentially unsanitary pit restrooms. The primary appeal seems to be the natural setting and the opportunity for a more secluded, backpacking-oriented camping trip.
For local users searching for "Camping Near Me" who are experienced backpackers or hikers seeking a more challenging and primitive camping experience near Laguna Beach, Upper Moro Campground might be an option to consider. However, the lack of water and the reported condition of the restrooms are significant drawbacks that require careful planning and preparation. Campers must be comfortable carrying all their water needs and potentially dealing with basic and unclean sanitation facilities.
Due to the limited amenities and the concerns raised in the reviews, Upper Moro Campground might not be suitable for casual campers or those seeking more comfort and convenience. The emphasis on hiking access also means it is not designed for vehicle-based camping.
To obtain any further official information about Upper Moro Campground, local users can try contacting the provided phone numbers. However, given the nature of primitive campgrounds, it is possible that detailed services or promotional information may not be readily available. Inquiries should focus on any specific regulations, permit requirements, or updated information regarding trail conditions and restroom facilities.
In conclusion, Upper Moro Campground offers a primitive, hike-in camping experience near Laguna Beach, CA, characterized by its natural setting and accessibility via trails. Potential campers must be prepared for the lack of on-site water, the presence of mosquitoes, the possibility of fog, and potentially unsanitary pit restrooms. It is best suited for experienced backpackers and hikers seeking a more self-sufficient and challenging outdoor adventure. Local users considering this campground should weigh the appeal of a primitive setting against the limited amenities and potential environmental challenges highlighted in the available reviews.

Upper Moro Campground Reviews
We started from the lower parking lot. Went up right at the first cut to end up on Moro Ridge Spur / Road. From there just go straight to Upper Moro Campground. The campsite have no water so take your own. They have a outhouse / pit for restroom. Mosquitoes 🦟 are ruthless anywhere and I don’t know why thought up here was the exception. Take your measures to prep against mosquitoes. I took us 1 hour and 45 minutes to ascend 974 ft, distance 3.15 miles. Make sure if your backpacking to use the rainfly as the fog will come in and wet everything. Will be trying Lower Moro next time. Have fun and Happy Camping
May 03, 2022 · LUIS JACINTOThis is a kind of nice place to camp looking from the outside. The restroom was dirty and stinky, so bury your poo instead of you are going to camp here.
May 18, 2024 · LC 444Very hard to determine spots. Some are marked, some are not, and some have a million picnic tables. Lower moro had better bathrooms, views, and sites.
