Waterdog Campground Introduce
For local outdoor enthusiasts, particularly fly fishermen, seeking a "camping near me" experience directly on the banks of the New River, Waterdog Campground located at 1268 S J E Gentry Rd, Laurel Springs, NC 28644, offers a rustic and convenient option. While not boasting extensive amenities, this campground provides a unique setting for those prioritizing river access for fishing and a more traditional camping feel. The user review offers valuable insights into the environment, services, and features of Waterdog Campground.
Environment and Ambiance:
The standout environmental feature of Waterdog Campground is its prime location directly on the New River. This makes it an ideal base for fly fishermen looking to easily access the river for their angling pursuits. The review explicitly mentions this connection, highlighting its appeal for those specifically interested in fishing the New River. The campsites are described as "mowed spots next to the river," indicating a natural, minimally developed camping area. This rustic ambiance is likely to attract campers who prefer a more direct connection with nature over highly manicured or amenity-rich campgrounds.
However, the review also points out a potential drawback: the lack of trees for shade at some campsites, including the reviewer's. This suggests that while the riverside location is a major advantage, some spots might be exposed to direct sunlight, especially during warmer months. Campers should be prepared for this and consider bringing their own shade provisions if necessary. The absence of picnic tables and fire rings at all sites, as mentioned in the review, further contributes to the rustic nature of the campground. While the reviewer's site lacked these, it's possible that some other spots might have them, so it's worth inquiring when making a reservation.
The presence of only one porta potty near the entrance indicates basic sanitation facilities. Campers who require more comprehensive restroom amenities should take this into consideration. The review also notes that entering the river from some spots might not be easy, suggesting that the riverbank terrain varies and some areas might be less accessible than others.
Services and Features:
Despite its rustic nature, Waterdog Campground offers some essential services. The host is described as "very nice" and willing to provide firewood for a small fee, which is a convenient service for campers wanting to enjoy campfires (assuming fire rings are available at their specific site or portable ones are permitted). The host also reportedly has "other supplies if you need," although the specifics of these supplies are not mentioned. It would be prudent to inquire directly with the host about the availability and cost of any additional items or services they might offer.
The primary feature of Waterdog Campground is undoubtedly its direct access to the New River, making it a prime location for fly fishing. The river itself is the main attraction, offering opportunities for fishing, and potentially other water-based activities depending on the river conditions and local regulations. The mowed spots for camping provide a basic area to set up tents. The presence of a single porta potty offers a minimal sanitation solution.
The helpfulness and availability of the host seem to be a significant positive aspect of the campground, potentially compensating for the lack of extensive amenities. Their willingness to provide firewood and other supplies can enhance the camping experience.
Promotional Information:
The provided information does not contain any specific promotional offers or discounts for Waterdog Campground. To inquire about rates, reservation procedures, or any potential seasonal specials, it is recommended to contact the host directly. The review does not mention a website or other online presence for the campground, so phone or in-person inquiry might be the primary way to obtain this information. When contacting the host, you could ask about the cost of firewood, the availability of picnic tables and fire rings at different campsites, and any other services or supplies they offer. It would also be wise to inquire about any rules or regulations specific to the campground and the New River.
Given its focus on fly fishermen and rustic camping, Waterdog Campground's primary promotion seems to be its location and the host's helpfulness. Word-of-mouth among the fly fishing community might also be a significant way that this campground attracts visitors.
Customer Reviews and Insights:
The single customer review provides a balanced perspective. The positive aspects highlighted are the ideal location for fly fishermen wanting riverside access on the New River and the nice host who offers firewood and other supplies. The rating of three stars reflects the drawbacks noted: the lack of picnic tables and fire rings at some sites (including the reviewer's), the absence of shade trees at their spot, and the presence of only one porta potty. The comment about the difficulty of entering the river from some spots is also an important consideration for potential campers.
This review suggests that Waterdog Campground is best suited for campers who prioritize direct river access for fly fishing and are comfortable with a more basic, rustic camping setup. Those expecting more developed amenities like picnic tables, fire rings at every site, shade, and readily accessible restroom facilities might be disappointed. However, the helpfulness of the host can be a significant advantage, and the unique riverside location is a major draw for the target audience.
Location and Accessibility:
Located at 1268 S J E Gentry Rd, Laurel Springs, NC 28644, Waterdog Campground is situated in Alleghany County in northwestern North Carolina. Laurel Springs is a small community known for its scenic beauty and proximity to the New River. The accessibility of the campground by road is implied by the address. However, it would be advisable to check road conditions, especially if traveling with larger vehicles or trailers. The proximity to the New River is the key locational advantage for this campground.
Why Choose Waterdog Campground?
For local residents specifically interested in "camping near me" that offers immediate access to the New River for fly fishing and are seeking a more rustic camping experience, Waterdog Campground in Laurel Springs presents a compelling option. The helpful host and the availability of firewood for a small fee add to the convenience. However, potential campers should be aware that some campsites may lack picnic tables, fire rings, and shade, and that sanitation facilities are limited to a single porta potty. The ease of river access may also vary depending on the specific campsite. If your priority is fishing the New River and you are comfortable with a more basic camping setup, Waterdog Campground could be the perfect spot for your next outdoor adventure. Contacting the host directly for more details and to make reservations is recommended.

Waterdog Campground Reviews
If you are a fly fisherman and want a rustic camping spot on the New River this is for you! For a small fee the host will have firewood waiting. I only rate 3stars because some of the spots don’t have picnic tables or fire rings, just a mowed spot next to the river (ours) and no trees for shade. Host is very nice and has other supplies if you need. One porta potty near the entrance. It’s not easy to enter the river from some spots
