Edit 9/18/2024:My review was for Jackpine Lake Dispersed Camping on Little Bass Lake in the Upper Peninsula of MI., south of Seney MI. It's showing up as Jackpine Campground in the southern peninsula of MI., east of Lake Michigan.(Jackpine Lake Dispersed Camping) [original post follows]This is part of Michigan's dispersed camping system. Two primitive sites across the lake from each other, each with a picnic table, fire ring, and enclosed primitive pit toilet. The lake is almost totally encircled in pines, and is relatively scenic. But, and for me that cost the side two stars, fishing was terrible. While the lake is pretty to look at, it's a shallow fish pan lake and I fished it hard for several hours with one bite which actually was a horny bluegill not really interested in eating! But if you're not a fisherman you would enjoy it. The peace, quiet, solitude & scenery is great!I I beached my kayak on the beach after fishing all afternoon. The next morning I found deer tracks down the shoreline and walking around the kayak. And, wolf tracks following the deer tracks! Weren't there the night before, didn't see another soul, so it wasn't a dog track it was a wolf! My only regret (other than lousy fishing) was that I did not get serenaded by the wolves at night. - Bruce Conner

Jack Pine Campground Introduce

For local adventurers in the 'camping near me' category seeking a more secluded and nature-immersive experience near Free Soil, Michigan, Jack Pine Campground, located on an Unnamed Road in Free Soil, MI 49411, USA, presents an interesting option. Based on recent customer reviews, this campground offers a blend of natural beauty and a sense of remoteness, coupled with some considerations for preparedness.

The environment surrounding Jack Pine Campground is characterized by its secluded campsites and proximity to natural features. One reviewer who initially mistook this location for a dispersed camping area in Michigan's Upper Peninsula described a lake "almost totally encircled in pines" and noted its scenic beauty. While this description might not directly apply to the Free Soil location, the second reviewer confirms a similarly appealing environment, emphasizing the secluded nature of the campsites. A significant highlight is the easy access to a network of nearby trails, suggesting opportunities for hiking and exploring the surrounding woodlands. Additionally, the experience of "watching the sunset at the beach" indicates the presence of a beach area, likely on a lake or perhaps within a reasonable driving distance, offering a picturesque way to conclude the day. The presence of deer tracks and even wolf tracks (though the latter observation was from the Upper Peninsula location) suggests a healthy local wildlife population, adding to the natural allure for those who appreciate wildlife viewing. However, campers should also be aware of the presence of raccoons and a significant number of ticks, requiring appropriate precautions.

The services and features at Jack Pine Campground lean towards a more rustic and self-sufficient camping experience, as indicated by the customer reviews:

  • Secluded campsites: Offering privacy and a sense of being immersed in nature, though perhaps located somewhat close together.
  • Access to trail network: Providing opportunities for hiking and exploring the surrounding area.
  • Beach access: Allowing for sunset viewing and potentially other beach-related activities.
  • Firewood delivery: A convenient service where firewood can be delivered directly to your campsite. However, it's advisable to order enough on the first day due to potential delays in subsequent deliveries.
  • No water at the campground (as of June 2023): Campers should be prepared to bring their own water for drinking, cooking, and cleaning, or be aware of the need to travel to the "main campground where the RVs are" to fill up.
  • Potential for wildlife encounters: Including deer and raccoons (with a specific mention of a raccoon named Ralph who visits campsites at night, requiring careful food storage).
  • Primitive camping feel: The lack of on-site water at the campsites suggests a more primitive camping experience, requiring campers to be self-reliant for certain needs.

It's important to note the discrepancy regarding water availability. While the website and reservation reportedly indicated water would be available, a reviewer in June 2023 found this to be incorrect. Local users planning to camp here should verify the current water situation before their trip and come prepared accordingly.

The key features of Jack Pine Campground revolve around its natural setting and the opportunities for outdoor activities. The secluded campsites offer a sense of privacy that many campers appreciate. The easy access to a network of trails caters to hikers and nature enthusiasts. The beach sunsets provide a beautiful and relaxing way to end the day. The firewood delivery service adds a touch of convenience. However, the potential lack of on-site water at the individual campsites is a significant feature that requires careful planning. The presence of local wildlife, including deer and raccoons, adds to the natural experience but also necessitates precautions for food storage and personal safety (regarding ticks).

The reviewer's ability to navigate the path to the campground with a regular-wheeled wagon suggests that the terrain is generally manageable for transporting gear, although there are parts with deeper sand that require some effort. This information is useful for those planning to bring equipment that needs to be moved from a parking area to their campsite.

Currently, the provided reviews do not mention any specific promotional information for Jack Pine Campground. For local users interested in camping here, it would be advisable to check the official website (if one exists) or contact the relevant managing authority (likely the National or State Forest service, given the mention of dispersed camping in the initial review, although this needs verification for the Free Soil location). These sources might provide information on reservation procedures, fees, and any current discounts or special offers. Given the discrepancy in the water availability information, direct communication would be particularly beneficial to get the most up-to-date details about the campground's services and amenities.

In conclusion, Jack Pine Campground near Free Soil, MI, offers a secluded camping experience with convenient access to hiking trails and the beauty of beach sunsets. While the lack of on-site water at the campsites requires campers to be well-prepared, the natural environment and sense of privacy make it an appealing option for those seeking a more rustic getaway. Local users should be aware of the potential for wildlife encounters, particularly raccoons and ticks, and take necessary precautions. To obtain the most accurate information regarding services, amenities, and any potential promotions, direct contact with the campground management or relevant authorities is recommended before planning a trip to Jack Pine Campground.
