Waverly Lake Campground Introduce
For local users in the Franklin, Illinois area searching for "camping near me," Waverly Lake Campground, located at 500 Waverly Lake Rd, Franklin, IL 62638, USA, offers a unique opportunity for a free outdoor experience. Based on the available customer reviews, this campground provides a blend of natural beauty and recreational activities, although it's important for local users to be aware of its amenities and potential drawbacks.
One of the most significant features of Waverly Lake Campground, particularly attractive to those looking for budget-friendly "camping near me" options, is that "camping is free." This allows local residents to enjoy an outdoor getaway without the added cost of campsite fees, making it an accessible option for many. The reviews highlight that the area is appreciated for its natural beauty, with one camper describing it as having a "great view" and being "peaceful." For local users seeking a tranquil escape close to home, Waverly Lake Campground could be a compelling choice.
A primary draw of this location appears to be fishing. One reviewer mentioned that they "usually just fish" there and have caught a variety of species, including "channel catfish, yellow bullhead catfish, striped bass, large mouth bass and plenty of panfish." This suggests that Waverly Lake is a decent fishing spot for local anglers. The reviewer also provided helpful tips on bait, noting success with nightcrawlers for catfish and bullhead, and the presence of shad baitfish that channel cats reportedly enjoy. For local users who are fishing enthusiasts looking for "camping near me" with angling opportunities, Waverly Lake seems promising.
In terms of camping itself, one reviewer noted that, "like most places when camping it's difficult to find a decently level campsite for a tent." This implies that while camping is permitted and free, the terrain for tent pitching might be uneven in some areas. Local users planning to tent camp should be prepared for this possibility and perhaps arrive early to scout for the most level ground. Despite this, the availability of free camping is a significant advantage for those willing to work with the natural landscape.
Regarding amenities, Waverly Lake Campground offers "three or four porta potty's that for the most part are clean." While not full restroom facilities, the presence of portable toilets provides a basic necessity for campers. The reviewer also mentioned "quite a lot of picnic tables and adequate trash receptacles," which are valuable for picnicking and maintaining the cleanliness of the area. There is also a "small pavilion/ shelter at one of the camp sites," which could offer shade or a covered area for activities.
For those interested in campfires, "ground fires are permitted," and some campsites have "makeshift fire rings." This allows for a more traditional camping experience with the ability to have a campfire for cooking or ambiance. However, local users should ensure they follow any local regulations regarding open fires and take necessary safety precautions.
One important environmental factor that local users should be aware of is the presence of a train track to the west of the lake. One reviewer who tent camped overnight reported being "woken up multiple times by the trains that came through," advising others to "just be aware that might happen." For light sleepers, the proximity of the train tracks and the associated noise could be a significant consideration when choosing Waverly Lake Campground for "camping near me."
For those interested in boating or simply accessing the lake, there is a "boat ramp with a dock." This feature enhances the appeal for local users who own small boats or kayaks and wish to enjoy Waverly Lake from the water. It also provides a point for easier shore access to the lake.
Overall, Waverly Lake Campground is described by one local user as "one of my favorite places to spend time outdoors that is in close proximity to my home." This personal endorsement speaks to the value that this free camping and fishing spot holds for the local community. The combination of free camping, fishing opportunities, picnic facilities, and lake access makes it a noteworthy option for those seeking "camping near me" in the Franklin, IL area.
To summarize for local users considering Waverly Lake Campground:
- Camping is free.
- Good fishing opportunities for various species.
- Presence of porta potties (generally clean), picnic tables, and trash receptacles.
- Ground fires are permitted with some makeshift fire rings.
- A small pavilion/shelter is available at one campsite.
- Boat ramp with a dock for lake access.
- Potential for train noise due to a nearby train track.
- Campsites for tents may not always be perfectly level.
Considering these points, Waverly Lake Campground offers a budget-friendly option for local users looking for "camping near me" with a focus on fishing and enjoying a natural setting. While it lacks amenities like electricity and potable water, and there is the potential for train noise, the free camping and the appeal of Waverly Lake itself make it a place worth considering for a local outdoor experience.

Waverly Lake Campground Reviews
I really enjoy this place. We usually just fish but have camped a time or two. Like most places when camping it's difficult to find a decently level campsite for a tent. There's no electricity or potable water but camping is free. There's not an abundance of shore fishing spots but it is a small lake. There are three or four porta potty' s that for the most part are clean but like everything camping there's a few bugs. There are quite a lot of picnic tables and adequate trash receptacles.I've caught channel catfish, yellow bullhead catfish, striped bass, large mouth bass and plenty of panfish here. There seems to be a lot of shad baitfish and from what other fisherman in the area have told me, the channel cats love live shad. I have had really good luck with ordinary night crawlers for bullhead and channel cats. Nightcrawlers seem to get me more bites than stink bait or other store bought baits. I haven't had much luck with strawberry Jello hotdogs.Ground fires are permitted and some camp sites have makeshift fire rings. There's is a small pavilion/ shelter at one of the camp sites. There is a train track to the west of the lake and the few times that I tent camped overnight I was woken up multiple times by the trains that came through. Just be aware that might happen. There's a boat ramp with a dock. All in all this is one of my favorite places to spend time outdoors that is in close proximity to my home.
May 30, 2022 · Trevor WhiteGreat view, peaceful, and free for 4 days..includes a nice little fishing spot.
Jun 20, 2024 · Noelani KiousNice free 4 day camping by Waverly Lake..one bathroom..that's not kept clean..3 camping spots upon enteringNice shade .and a shelter with 2 picnic tables .fire pits and trash cans....as I walked around saw trash on the ground and cans and glass in the fire pits..with all the garbage cans there ..that tells me people is so friggy lazy they can't walk a few steps to the garbage can ...There is a boat dock down the road where IL residents can fish ..it's a dead end and small turn around ..A 19 ft travel trailer could turn around but nothing bigger..I did my part by picking up the trash and cleaning glass and cans of the fire pits ..I believe in leaving a place cleaner then I found it..And as a FYI ...a local cop patrols the campground to make sure No One over stays their 4 days....I will definitely return some day.
Jul 09, 2022 · becky HigginsAny size rig will fit in the first two sites, no services but full internet Vz and ATT. Quiet with occasional train, no other free options nearby. Quite nice!
