Stay away!!! New management is below standard. Over half of the seasonal campers have left or were kicked out of the campground. They cut the lodges operating hours by 70% and even when they are technically open they are closed (they like to lean a sandwich board with their hours of operation against the entrance door, not next to the door but against the actual door. Blocking the entrance during the hours they are supposedly open). They are not welcoming and have been known to yell at people looking for information about the property. The roads have pot holes all over the place and they haven’t adequately laid rock down so your vehicle and rig get covered with mud and dust. Campers have to water the roads down to keep the dust in check so they don’t breathe it in.The playground is infested with sand fleas, it was so bad I had to stop taking my daughter after she got covered in bites. I asked the management if they could do something about the fleas and they just looked at me. Of course they did nothing about it.They closed the ponds to fishing two months early last year. I can understand needing to restock the ponds for fishing but they didn’t give anyone notice or offer any kind of compensation for the inconvenience. A lot of campers specifically camp out there for the fishing. They came out one weekend and were told “no more fishing for the rest of the season”. Like, what!?!?! No notice, no sorry, just inane excuses about “insurance reasons”. Are you for real? That really pissed people off and when they complained about the inconvenience their leases were canceled or not renewed. Had they provided a little notice something like, “Hey just a heads up we need to restock the pond so no more fishing after such and such date” maybe people wouldn’t have reacted the way they did. Compensating them for the loss of two months of no fishing would have gone a long way too. A BBQ or a special discount on ice cream could have been offered and would have been an easy appeasement but instead they act like the people upset at losing something they paid for were crazy and/or trouble makers (they weren’t).The remaining campers are the ones that are going to miss those who have left. A campground isn’t about the property or it’s amenities, it’s the people who work there and camp there that make a campground what it is. And this place doesn’t have those people anymore. - Bobby Moore

For local users in the Ashland, Illinois area searching for "camping near me," Crazy Horse Campground, located at 2113 Crazy Horse Rd, Ashland, IL 62612, USA, is an option to consider. You can contact them at (217) 886-2089 or +1 217-886-2089. Based on recent customer reviews, it's important for local users to be aware of potentially significant changes and concerns regarding the management and overall experience at this campground.

One review strongly advises to "Stay away!!!" citing that "New management is below standard." This is a critical piece of feedback for local users looking for a reliable and pleasant "camping near me" experience. The reviewer further notes a significant departure of seasonal campers, stating that "Over half of the seasonal campers have left or were kicked out of the campground." This high turnover among long-term visitors could indicate underlying issues with the campground's operation or policies under the new management.

The same negative review details several specific concerns. Firstly, it mentions a drastic reduction in the operating hours of the lodge, claiming a "70%" cut. Even when the lodge is supposedly open according to a sandwich board, it is reportedly often inaccessible due to the sign being placed against the entrance door. This suggests potential inconvenience for campers who might rely on the lodge's services or amenities.

Another significant issue raised is the alleged unwelcoming nature of the management, with claims that they "have been known to yell at people looking for information about the property." Such behavior would undoubtedly detract from the experience of local users seeking a friendly and helpful atmosphere at a "camping near me" location.

The infrastructure of the campground also appears to be a concern. The review points out that "The roads have pot holes all over the place and they haven’t adequately laid rock down so your vehicle and rig get covered with mud and dust." This could lead to discomfort and damage to vehicles, and the fact that "Campers have to water the roads down to keep the dust in check" indicates a lack of proper maintenance by the management.

For families with children, a particularly troubling issue is the state of the playground, which is described as "infested with sand fleas." The reviewer recounts having to stop taking their daughter to the playground due to the severe bites and alleges that management took no action when informed about the problem. This lack of attention to the safety and comfort of children would be a major concern for local families considering this campground.

Another significant grievance mentioned in the review pertains to the closure of the fishing ponds "two months early last year" without any prior notice or compensation to campers, many of whom specifically camp there for fishing. The reviewer highlights the abruptness of the announcement and the management's "inane excuses about ‘insurance reasons’," which reportedly led to lease cancellations or non-renewals for those who complained. This suggests a disregard for camper satisfaction and a potentially punitive approach to addressing concerns.

The reviewer concludes by emphasizing the importance of the community of campers and staff in making a campground enjoyable, suggesting that the departure of many campers under the new management has negatively impacted this aspect of Crazy Horse Campground.

However, it's important to present a balanced view. Another, seemingly earlier, review offers a contrasting perspective. This reviewer states, "We were traveling back from out west and needed a place to land for the night. We just happened upon this campground and glad we did!" They describe the "Staff was super nice!" and enjoyed a "haunted hayride" that was offered. This review also praises the campground as "really pretty and very family friendly" and notes that "The bathrooms and showers are nice and clean." This positive feedback indicates that at some point, Crazy Horse Campground may have offered a pleasant experience.

Given these conflicting reviews, local users searching for "camping near me" at Crazy Horse Campground should be aware that the experience might vary, potentially significantly, depending on when the reviews were written relative to the change in management. The more recent review paints a concerning picture of the current state of the campground, while the other suggests a more positive past experience.

For local users considering a stay here, it would be prudent to contact the campground directly to inquire about the current management, the condition of the facilities (roads, playground, bathrooms/showers), and the availability of amenities like fishing ponds and the lodge. Asking specific questions based on the issues raised in the negative review would be advisable to get a current and accurate understanding of what to expect.

In conclusion, Crazy Horse Campground in Ashland, IL, presents a mixed picture for local users seeking "camping near me." While one review highlights a past positive experience with friendly staff and a family-friendly atmosphere, a more recent review expresses significant concerns about new management, including below-standard service, poor maintenance, issues with amenities, and an unwelcoming attitude. Local users should weigh these contrasting perspectives and consider contacting the campground directly for the most up-to-date information before making a decision.
