Wayne Fi.... Campground Introduce
Looking for the perfect camping experience near you? Wayne Fitzgerrell Campground, situated at 11094 Ranger Rd, Whittington, IL 62897, offers a unique outdoor escape in the heart of Southern Illinois, close to the scenic Rend Lake. While not a full hookup campground, it provides a base for exploring the natural beauty and recreational opportunities of the region. You can reach them at (618) 629-2320 or +1 618-629-2320 for inquiries and reservations.
Nestled within a potentially picturesque setting, Wayne Fitzgerrell Campground offers campers the chance to immerse themselves in nature. According to visitor feedback, the views from the campground are described as "amazing," suggesting a location that boasts scenic vistas and a tranquil environment. This could appeal to those seeking a peaceful retreat and opportunities for photography or simply enjoying the natural landscape. The presence of mature trees and open spaces likely contributes to a sense of being away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
However, it's important for potential visitors to be aware that the campground operates without full hookups. This means that while you can likely set up your RV or camper, you will need to come prepared with fresh water in your tanks, as this amenity is not consistently available at individual campsites. This is a crucial consideration for those planning longer stays or relying heavily on onboard water systems.
In terms of services, the campground does offer a dump station for waste disposal, which is a necessary convenience for RV travelers. However, one recent review highlighted a significant issue with the water hydrant located at the dump station, noting that it "shoots water out everywhere," leading to a wasteful and potentially inconvenient experience for those attempting to fill their tanks. The review also mentioned that other water hydrants are "randomly located" and "difficult to locate," suggesting that accessing water sources throughout the campground might be challenging.
Facilities at Wayne Fitzgerrell Campground appear to be somewhat dated. The restrooms and showers are described by one visitor as "old and dirty." This is an important factor for campers who prioritize clean and well-maintained hygiene facilities. Potential visitors should be prepared for potentially rustic conditions in these areas.
The natural environment within the campground also seems to require attention. One review noted that "sticks and branches litter the place" and that "some spots look like they haven't been used for years." This suggests that general maintenance and upkeep of the grounds might be lacking, potentially impacting the overall aesthetic and usability of some campsites. Campers should be aware that they might encounter some natural debris and potentially less-maintained areas.
Despite these concerns regarding amenities and maintenance, Wayne Fitzgerrell Campground does have a notable positive attribute. According to one visitor, "the majority of the campers are more outgoing and friendly than at other nearby campgrounds." This social aspect could be a significant draw for individuals and families looking to connect with fellow outdoor enthusiasts and foster a sense of community during their camping trip. The friendly atmosphere might enhance the overall experience, creating a welcoming environment despite the physical limitations of the campground.
For local users searching for "camping near me," Wayne Fitzgerrell Campground presents a mixed picture. While the potential for scenic views and a friendly camper community exists, it's crucial to weigh these positives against the reported issues with water access, the condition of restrooms and showers, and the general maintenance of the grounds. Campers accustomed to full-service campgrounds or those who highly value pristine facilities might find Wayne Fitzgerrell less appealing than alternative options in the region, such as the nearby Army Corps sites mentioned in one of the reviews.
Before making a reservation, it would be advisable to contact the campground directly at (618) 629-2320 or +1 618-629-2320 to inquire about the current status of water availability, the condition of facilities, and any recent improvements or maintenance efforts. Speaking directly with the campground management can provide the most up-to-date information and help you make an informed decision based on your specific needs and expectations for a camping experience.
In conclusion, Wayne Fitzgerrell Campground offers a potentially scenic camping location near Rend Lake with a reputation for a friendly camper community. However, prospective visitors should be prepared for the lack of full hookups, potential difficulties with accessing water, and the possibility of encountering older and less-maintained facilities and grounds. By considering these factors and perhaps contacting the campground directly for the latest information, local users can determine if Wayne Fitzgerrell Campground aligns with their desired "camping near me" experience.

Wayne Fi.... Campground Reviews
Great place, may want to bring fresh water in your tanks. Not full hookup. Views are amazing.
Aug 31, 2023 · Herc WilliamsThe water hydrant located at the dump station on the way in shoots water out everywhere. I was soaked after filling our tank and it's very wasteful. The other randomly located hydrants are difficult to locate. The restrooms and showers are old and dirty. Sticks and branches litter the place and some spots look like they haven't been used for years. This was was our first time at Wayne Fitzgerrell and will be the last. We'll continue staying at the Army Corps sites instead.A positive about Wayne Fitzgerrell is that the majority of the campers are more outgoing and friendly than at other nearby campgrounds.
Jul 27, 2019 · AnthonyWhat a find, we backed up right up to the water. This will be our new stop and rest place on our way to Illinois and Back to Florida.
Sep 07, 2023 · Michael BrattaThis Campground is not RV friendly. The fresh water hydrants are in very poor condition and there are very few of them. Good luck locating one because they are all unmarked and we'll hidden. Filling your RV water tank is nearly impossible. They all have a spring loaded handles that leak like crazy so expect to get your shoes, clothes and feet soaked filling up your RV water tanks. The water hydrants are not convientately located and when you do find one you have to park your RV on the road and walk thru other camper's camping sites to get to the water hydrants. You will also need very long waters hoses, too! PS: the camp site entrance water hydrant is nearly non functional and has been for years!
