Based on feedback from fellow outdoor enthusiasts, this campground provides a fantastic setting for primitive camping alongside a river, conveniently located near other outdoor attractions. Its standout features include spacious and well-separated campsites and an exceptionally affordable nightly rate.
The environment surrounding West Fork Campground is a key element of its charm. Its location right next to a river offers local campers the soothing sounds of flowing water and easy access for potential riverside relaxation or activities. West Fork Campground is explicitly described as a primitive camping area. This implies that the services provided are intentionally basic, focusing on the essential needs of campers seeking a more self-sufficient outdoor experience. Based on the available reviews, the services and amenities likely include:
- Primitive Campsites: The core offering is individual campsites designed for tent camping. The reviews emphasize that these sites are "pretty far from one another" and "large," suggesting a sense of privacy and ample space for setting up camp and enjoying the surroundings. Local users who value seclusion and space when "camping near me" will find this particularly appealing.
- River Access: Direct access to the river is a significant amenity, providing opportunities for activities such as fishing, wading, or simply enjoying the riverside environment. The sandy river access mentioned in a review suggests a user-friendly entry point.
- Natural Features: The presence of a nearby small falls, audible from some campsites, adds a natural auditory element to the camping experience, contributing to the overall sense of being immersed in nature.
- Affordable Rate: The exceptionally low price of $10 per night, as mentioned in a review, is a major draw for budget-conscious local users seeking an affordable "camping near me" option.
It is crucial for local users considering West Fork Campground to understand that "primitive camping" typically means the absence of amenities such as running water at individual campsites, electrical hookups, and potentially even formal restroom facilities. Campers should be prepared to be self-sufficient in terms of water, sanitation, and power. However, the trade-off is often a more natural, secluded, and affordable camping experience.
The features of West Fork Campground contribute to its unique appeal as a primitive "camping near me" destination:
- Riverside Location: Being situated right next to a river offers a constant connection with nature, providing soothing sounds and opportunities for water-related activities.
- Spacious and Secluded Campsites: The significant distance between campsites ensures a high degree of privacy and a sense of being alone in nature, a valuable feature for those seeking a peaceful escape. The large size of the sites also allows for more comfortable setup and movement.

- Proximity to Other Outdoor Places: Its location near other outdoor attractions makes it a convenient base for exploring the wider natural beauty and recreational opportunities of the Clayton area.
- Natural Sounds and Scenery: The presence of a nearby small falls, audible from the campsites, adds a unique sensory dimension to the camping experience, enhancing the connection with the natural environment.
- Sandy River Access: The ease of access to the river via a sandy bank makes it more enjoyable for activities and simply relaxing by the water's edge.

West Fork Campground Reviews
Great spot for primitive camping. Right next to the river, not far from other outdoor places. Campsites are pretty far from one another. $10 a night.
Feb 17, 2024 · Nicole ScheriffGreat primitive camping. Sandy river access. Small falls is closest to spot #5 but can be heard from #1. All five are pretty large and spread apart.
Aug 26, 2021 · Darren BrackettIt has multiple camp areas arround the car parking lot. A creek a few steps from each camping spot. Very nice come in mid October for full leaf bloom.
Oct 29, 2023 · isela rodriguez5 walk-in campsites on Overflow Creek. No water. Pit toilet (was nasty each time I was there). Sites are spacious - have picnic table, lantern hook, fire ring of some sort. No established tent pad - no issue with hanging hammocks. Nice paths down to creek - fair amount of fishing/tubing. Quiet - except the site to the far left - not a lot of privacy from the road as people passed by. People can pass thru your site to access their own, so if you want seclusion, keep that in mind.No cell service here. Be cautious walking down to the creek - have seen a copperhead or 2.Never had an issue with bears AT the campsite, but had an encounter with a mama & 2 cubs just past the bridge - close enough to encourage you put your good up at night to be safe.If you hike up the road (which has been closed for several years for "repair"), a lot of people fish there and there is an active family of river otters as well as a lot of dispersed camping - which is overgrown from lack of access. One last warning - I learned this the hard way. This creek flashes. I had been camping here for 3 nights - unaware of changing weather forecast. Thunder/rain started at 9pm, poured ALL NIGHT LONG. Creek had been ankle deep before sunset - at sunrise, the creek had risen incredibly - about 6ft from my tent - creek was well over my head.
Sep 14, 2017 · Hiking DivaOnly visited when exploring Dispersed camping opportunities up further on Holcome Creek. I read others reviews and being one who hates liter and filth I have to say it was incredibly clean there right after Labor Day weekend. Sites are outstanding as they are spaced apart and offer privacy more so then other CGs. And most are on Overflow Creek. Pits were clean and well stocked. It was empty of campers and almost elected to stay even for 10 bucks. It was in real good shape first of Sept .We all are Public Land owners. Treat it like you want to show it off. Please.
