Winfield Campground Check-In Introduce
For local users in the Appling, Georgia area searching for 'camping near me', Winfield Campground Check-In, located at 7701 Winfield Rd, Appling, GA 30802, USA, has historically been recognized as a beautiful Army Corp of Engineers campground. The contact phone number is (706) 541-0147 or +1 706-541-0147. Based on past visitor experiences, Winfield Campground Check-In offered a serene and family-friendly environment for camping.
One positive review from a visitor who stayed for a week in July highlighted the "terrific campsite" and the exceptional kindness and helpfulness of a staff member named Nanette, both before and during their stay. The reviewer described the campground as "very quiet and private," which are highly desirable qualities for those seeking a peaceful camping experience. This visitor also mentioned creating "priceless family memories" during their time at Winfield Campground Check-In, underscoring its appeal as a destination for family camping trips.
Adding to the convenience and enjoyment of a stay at Winfield Campground Check-In, the reviewer noted the availability of a camper setup at their site through Todd Pollard, who was highly recommended. This suggests that local users who do not own a camper might have had the option to rent one and have it conveniently set up at their campsite. Furthermore, the proximity to Clark’s Marina allowed visitors to rent a pontoon boat, indicating access to lake activities and the potential for enjoyable time on the water. This combination of camping and water recreation likely made Winfield Campground Check-In a popular choice for those seeking a comprehensive outdoor experience.
Despite these positive aspects, the same reviewer also pointed out an area needing improvement: the bathhouse facilities. The request for updated and improved bathhouses, along with a suggestion for more funding to maintain their cleanliness, indicates that while the natural setting and campsite experience were positive, the communal facilities were perceived as lacking. This is a crucial piece of feedback for potential future visitors and for the management regarding areas for potential upgrades.
The reviewer also expressed a desire for the campground to remain open longer in the fall, suggesting that Winfield Campground Check-In's operational season might have been limited, which could be a factor for local campers planning trips during the shoulder seasons.
However, it is critical to note a subsequent and concerning piece of information: "This beautiful Army Corp of Engineers campground is CLOSED due to hanging trees, destruction and debris that resulted from Hurricane Helene. Cleanup has been indefinitely delayed due to insufficient funds." This information significantly alters the current status and accessibility of Winfield Campground Check-In for local users searching for 'camping near me'.
The closure due to hurricane damage implies that the environment, which was previously described as quiet and private, has been severely impacted by natural forces. The presence of "hanging trees, destruction and debris" suggests potential safety hazards and an unusable condition of the campground. The fact that cleanup has been "indefinitely delayed due to insufficient funds" paints a concerning picture for the immediate future reopening of Winfield Campground Check-In.
For local residents who may have enjoyed camping at Winfield Campground Check-In in the past or were considering it for future trips, it is essential to understand that the campground is currently not operational. The reasons for closure – hurricane damage and lack of funds for cleanup – indicate that reopening is not imminent and will depend on the allocation of resources for the necessary repairs and restoration.
Therefore, while Winfield Campground Check-In may have offered a terrific camping experience in the past, with kind staff, quiet and private campsites, and access to amenities like camper rentals and boat rentals, its current state is one of closure due to significant damage. Local users searching for 'camping near me' will need to consider alternative campgrounds in the Appling, GA, or surrounding areas until Winfield Campground Check-In is able to address the damage and resume operations.
It is advisable for anyone interested in the future status of Winfield Campground Check-In to monitor local news and the Army Corp of Engineers' official channels for updates on its potential reopening. The positive past experiences shared by visitors like the one who stayed in July indicate that once these issues are resolved, it could once again be a desirable camping destination for the local community.
In conclusion, while Winfield Campground Check-In has historically been a valued 'camping near me' option in Appling, GA, offering a pleasant environment and various conveniences, it is currently closed due to hurricane-related damage and a lack of funding for cleanup. Local users should be aware of this closure and seek alternative camping locations in the meantime. The potential for future reopening exists, but it is contingent on the availability of funds for the necessary restoration work.

Winfield Campground Check-In Reviews
My family and I just spent a week at this campground in July. We had a terrific campsite. Nanette was so kind friendly helpful before and during our stay. Very quiet and private. We made some priceless family memories. We had a camper set up at our site from Todd Pollard he is awesome 👏🌟 We rented a pontoon boat from Clark’s Marina so nice too. My only request would be that the bath houses facility be updated and improved and more funding by to get them cleaner other than that perfect camping location. Wish they stayed open longer in the fall too.

Mar 31, 2025 · Eric VanekThis is a campground so not sure why hotel survey popped up. The host were very nice and informative. Beautiful campground very clean and well maintained. We loved our site. The only issue we had is with disrespectful campers who did not pick up after their pets and let them run off lease in the campground. We had 3 fur babies and were kept on lease and picked up after each time. I know some people feel entitled or just want to ruin the adventure for others and eventually will be denied of bringing pets along on trips.
Sep 14, 2024 · Alex MooreAwesome campground. All spots are water front and decent size. Bathhouse needs to be redone for better privacy in showers. Place is quiet and great views everywhere you look
Jun 18, 2024 · Garrett HiteWe are leaving today and have thoroughly enjoyed this campground! Staff is phenomenal! Great personalities and super nice! Clean bathrooms! Would have left 5 stars although site 36, which we would stay at every single time we came but big problem, there is no easy access to the water due to the drop off at the campsite. It is steep and very dangerous with rebar stakes sticking up. That was a real bummer although hopefully you guys will fix it before someone really gets hurt and tries to legally make an issue out of it! If it weren’t for that, this site would be total perfection! ❤️
