Thompson / Grand River Valley KOA Holiday Introduce
Looking for "camping near me" in the Thompson, Ohio area? Thompson / Grand River Valley KOA Holiday, located at 6445 Ledge Rd, Thompson, OH 44086, USA, offers a camping experience with a range of amenities typical of a KOA campground. You can reach them at (440) 298-1311 or their mobile number, +1 440-298-1311, for bookings and information. Based on recent customer reviews, experiences at this campground appear to be varied, with some guests reporting positive stays while others express significant concerns.
One recent review highlights a very positive three-week stay at Thompson / Grand River Valley KOA Holiday. The guest praised the manager, Chris, for his genuine care, hard work in maintaining the grounds, and honest communication. This reviewer felt well-treated from the initial booking to departure and expressed satisfaction, planning to return the following year. This positive feedback suggests that under certain management, the campground can offer a pleasant experience with attentive service.
However, another, more critical review paints a different picture, particularly regarding changes since KOA took over the location. This long-time camper, who had visited the campground for several years prior to and after the KOA acquisition, noted a decline in the overall experience, especially during the 2024 camping season under the current management. A significant concern raised was the extensive cutting down of trees, which detracted from the natural camping environment, making it feel more like a "gravel parking lot with only some trees on the site." For local users searching for "camping near me" to immerse themselves in nature, this change could be a significant drawback.
The cleanliness of the facilities was also a point of criticism in the negative review. The bathrooms were described as smelling of mildew, with persistent hair and soap scum in the showers, a noticeable decline from previous conditions. This aspect is crucial for the comfort and hygiene of campers, and the negative feedback suggests potential issues with the upkeep of these essential services.
Regarding amenities, the pool area was mentioned as having insufficient furniture despite ample space for more. Additionally, the chlorine level in the pool was reported to be so high that it caused irritation to the eyes and nostrils. These details could impact the enjoyment of the recreational facilities for families and individuals looking for a relaxing "camping near me" option with a pool.
Perhaps the most concerning aspect raised in the negative review was the behavior of the staff, described as "super rude and unfriendly." The reviewer noted a lack of smiles and waves, contrasting with the staff's apparent eagerness to enforce rules, sometimes aggressively, such as chasing down and yelling at people for perceived speeding within the campground, even while staff themselves reportedly drove fast on golf carts. Such interactions can significantly detract from the overall camping experience and the welcoming atmosphere one might expect when looking for a local getaway.
Considering these contrasting reviews, local users searching for "camping near me" should weigh these points carefully. The positive review indicates the potential for a pleasant stay with a caring manager, while the negative review highlights concerns about the environment (loss of trees), cleanliness (bathrooms), amenities (pool furniture, chlorine levels), and staff demeanor. It's important to note that experiences can vary, and management changes can influence the quality of a campground over time.
As Thompson / Grand River Valley KOA Holiday is part of the KOA network, it likely offers a range of typical KOA services and features, such as various types of campsites (RV, tent, cabin), hookups, and possibly recreational activities. However, the recent negative feedback suggests that the quality of these offerings might not consistently meet expectations. Potential local campers may want to inquire specifically about the current state of the grounds, facilities, and management when making a booking.
Currently, there is no specific promotional information available from the provided reviews. However, KOA campgrounds often have their own promotions and loyalty programs, which local users might want to explore directly through the Thompson / Grand River Valley KOA Holiday's website or by contacting them via phone.
In conclusion, Thompson / Grand River Valley KOA Holiday presents a mixed picture based on the provided reviews. While one guest had a wonderful experience with attentive management, another reported significant disappointments related to the natural environment, cleanliness, amenities, and staff friendliness. Local users searching for "camping near me" should consider these differing perspectives and perhaps seek more recent information or specific details about the current conditions before making a reservation.

Thompson / Grand River Valley KOA Holiday Reviews
Im not much on writing reviews, but I must. I had a wonderful experience while spending 3 weeks at KOA THOMPSON, OHIO. From the first phone call to book the site till the day I left, I was treated very well. I felt Chris the manager genuinely cared that I would enjoy my stay and I did. I noticed him always working hard around the grounds, making sure it was kept up. He answered all my questions with honesty. I am very satisfied with my stay and will return next year.Keep up the great work, Chris.See you again.
Apr 07, 2025 · John ValenteWhat a disappointing turn this campground has made!! I’ve camped at this location with friends for several years, from before KOA bought it until this past summer. We weren’t thrilled when we found out KOA took over, unsure of what changes would be made. The first year was ok but when the management changed every year it got progressively worse and worse. 2024 camping was by the absolute worst due to the current management! So may trees were cut down, I don’t know about other people but I go camping to be in nature, not what essentially feels like a gravel parking lot with only some trees on the site. The bathrooms smelled of mildew and there was always hair and soap scum in the showers, which had not been the case previously, certainly not to this degree. There is hardly enough furniture at the pool although plenty of more space for some, the chlorine is so strong it burns your eyes and nostrils. Worst of all the staff is super rude and unfriendly. No smiles, no waves but will absolutely barrel through the campground to chase people down to yell at them if they feel they are driving too fast, even though they themselves drive fast on their gold carts. What a terrible experience.
Nov 12, 2024 · marianne carlinaLoved this campground for over 10 years. Had a beautiful seasonal site for 7. Spent thousands of dollars on a camper, deck, shed, gravel & flowers to improve our area. Was our retirement plan until the current manager raised the seasonal fee by $1000.00 & winter storage to $600.00!!!! Corporate said it was at the managers discretion!! But the worst was not renewing 3/4 of the seasonals with no explanation! Would not recommend!
Nov 12, 2024 · Sue SpanglerThis campground has gone terribly south since a small angry bearded man took over as manager. This was a favorite place for my family to camp for over 10 years. The condition of the campground overall has really deteriorated. The swimming pond was a favorite spot for my kids. Now they have let it get dirty and disgusting and no longer have the inflatables that were the kids favorite. The manager is so angry the second you pull in. He does not provide an atmosphere for relaxation and fun that one would expect coming into a campground for a family vacation.
Nov 12, 2024 · Jessica StratigakosMy family has camped at Thompson KOA for several years. We started with camping in the cabins, then as weekenders, then became seasonals. We chose this campground even though it was three hours away from home because we loved what the campground had to offer. There has been new management every year that we have camped here. The new manager this year, Chris, told us that he was sent to straighten the place up. He failed, and brought nothing but disappointment all season. Disappointment began with the lack of activities for our children. Weekend wristbands for $20 per child to make a tie dye shirt and paint a rock or similar craft does not count as child camping activities in my book. It is ridiculous to think a seasonal would pay that every weekend for the same thing. We were disappointed with the swimming pond this summer. The new inflatables from the prior year were removed and old, unmaintained inflatables were put in their place. The beach area was left unmaintained with weeds growing out of control. The entertainment such as bands and dj’s were cut substantially too. It’s as if Chris did not want to see the seasonals having any fun together. The grounds keeping was poorly maintained. It was not hard to miss the weeds taking over at the jumping pillow, around the clubhouse, and throughout the weekenders campsites. Overgrown grass bordered the tree lines throughout the park, where in previous years it was maintained and kept nice. The main bathrooms had broken faucets all year. The bathrooms in the clubhouse were locked during clubhouse events. It seemed that the managers priorities this year was to make sure nobody drove over 5 mph, because he drove around in his 4 seat side by side with red and blue police lights in it, as if he was ready to pull someone over. Although safety was not his main priority because the entrance gate that he promised to fix this year, never was repaired or replaced. Instead he had staff stand at the broken gate during busy hours to make sure people coming in had the correct colored parking pass and to make sure the visitors paid their fee to get in.The manager, Chris, lacks the hospitality skills and professionalism that a campground manager should possess. It was common knowledge that he would threaten to evict seasonal campers due to them voicing their concerns. Therefore, many of the seasonals spent the year walking on egg shells around him and his family. Our final disappointment was finding out that about 80 seasonal campers were either not renewed by the manager, with no reason given or chose not to renew their own contracts for next year. With a $1,000 price hike and a winter storage fee that doubled, I can’t imagine why anyone would want to stay under the current conditions of the campground. I hope corporate KOA takes notice of what has happened.
