Wrights Lake Campground Introduce
For those seeking an unforgettable escape into the heart of California's high Sierra, Wrights Lake Campground in Kyburz, CA, presents an idyllic destination. As a featured listing in the "Camping Near Me" category, this campground offers local users and travelers a direct gateway to nature's tranquility, combined with access to services and goods essential for a memorable outdoor experience. Nestled within the vast expanse of the Eldorado National Forest, Wrights Lake is a true gem, renowned for its pristine lake, breathtaking scenery, and a quiet, reposeful atmosphere.
Wrights Lake Campground is situated at an elevation of approximately 7,000 feet, offering a refreshing high-country climate and stunning vistas of the surrounding Sierra Nevada peaks and the majestic Desolation Wilderness. The environment is characterized by heavy timber, providing ample shade and a sense of seclusion for many campsites. The focal point is the beautiful Wrights Lake itself, a non-motorized lake that reflects the awe-inspiring scenery, creating a picturesque backdrop for your camping adventure. The campground is generally described as "quaint and pretty quiet," providing a peaceful retreat from urban noise. While the scenery is consistently lauded as "awe-inspiring," visitors should be aware of wildlife. One review humorously mentions "gators" in the lake, which is highly unlikely for this region, suggesting a misidentification or a playful jest; however, as with any natural environment, it's always wise to be mindful of local fauna. The pristine natural setting is a major draw for those looking to reconnect with nature.
Wrights Lake Campground provides essential amenities to ensure a comfortable stay while maintaining its rustic charm. Each campsite typically includes a picnic table and a fire ring, perfect for meals and evening campfires. Bear-proof food storage containers are also provided at campsites, a critical amenity given the presence of black bears in the Eldorado National Forest. Drinking water is available, ensuring campers have access to fresh water throughout their stay. The campground is equipped with vault toilets, which are regularly cleaned and well-maintained by the camp hosts, a detail that is frequently appreciated by visitors. While showers are available, one review mentions a leaky head and a rigged setup, indicating that while functional, they might not be luxurious. It's important to note that there are no RV hookups (electrical, water, or sewer) available at Wrights Lake Campground, and dump stations may not be present, so RV and trailer campers should plan accordingly. Potable water is available, but RV filling from piped sources in campgrounds is not permitted. The campground operates with dedicated camp hosts who are on-site to provide assistance and maintain the facilities. Phone service for inquiries is available at (530) 644-2324 or +1 530-644-2324. Royal Elk Park Management operates the campground.
Wrights Lake Campground offers a diverse range of features and activities that cater to various outdoor interests. The lake itself is a focal point for non-motorized water activities, making it an excellent spot for kayaking, canoeing, and paddleboarding. Kayakers can explore the beautiful little lake, with one reviewer mentioning a "wonderful surprise on the other side" and the chance to spot an eagle on the east end of the lake. Swimming is also a refreshing option, though the lake temperatures can be quite cold. Fishing is a popular pastime, with Wrights Lake being a good spot for trout fishing, and sometimes stocked with trout. A valid California fishing license is required. For hikers, Wrights Lake is a paradise, offering plenty of trails for all skill levels, from short, easy walks to longer, more challenging excursions into the adjacent Desolation Wilderness. Day hiking permits are required for Desolation Wilderness and are available at the trailhead. Backpacking is also a popular activity from Wrights Lake, with overnight permits needed and available at the Pacific Ranger Station. Other activities include picnicking, wildlife watching (including the possibility of seeing white-tailed deer, raccoons, squirrels, and bobcats), and birdwatching. During hunting season, the area might experience increased noise and activity, as noted by one reviewer. The campground also features an amphitheater, which might host interpretive programs during the summer. Horse camping is also available at a separate, dedicated equestrian campground nearby.
Wrights Lake Campground is a highly sought-after destination, and planning ahead is essential. Reservations are available and can be booked up to six months in advance through the National Recreation Reservation System (Recreation.gov). Some sites may also be available on a first-come, first-served basis. The campground typically operates from late June to October, depending on snow conditions. Fees are generally $28 per single site and $56 for a double site. Interagency Senior and Access passes are accepted for single-family units, providing a discount; remember to provide your pass number when making a reservation. An extra vehicle may incur an additional fee. Check-out time is 1:00 p.m. and check-in is 2:00 p.m. Maximum stay limits are 14 days per district per year. While the campground is generally quiet, especially the tent-only camping loop, some larger groups on weekends have occasionally been noted for noise into the late hours. One recurring theme in reviews pertains to the camp hosts, specifically with some past visitors finding one host less than personable, though acknowledging their diligence in maintaining clean bathrooms. It's operated by Royal Elk Park Management. Despite occasional minor issues with individual hosts, the consensus is that Wrights Lake Campground remains "an amazing campground" and a "happy place" for many, offering a truly serene and awe-inspiring camping experience. Firewood can be gathered in the area, but campers should be aware of regulations regarding dead and down wood. Remember to practice Leave No Trace principles to preserve this beautiful natural environment for future visitors.

Wrights Lake Campground Reviews
The camp is quaint and perty quite. The lake has alligators which could possibly effect the fishing negative. Small swimming area. Just be mindful of the gators. Jay and his son were the perfect personable and helpful hosts ever. There dog Brutus was a delightful character, the hunting season was a bit noisy and hectic. But the big foot camper society were awesome. Shower stayed hot but leaked alot and head was rigged but over all great quite repose for awhile when your traveling and between spots. And 20$ a night 10$ with parks pass. Thanks guys.
Mar 02, 2025 · Christian HastieDon't go here! You'll hate it! I love it, it's one of my happy places, so stay away. In all honesty, this is an amazing campground. The scenery is awe inspiring, if you like to kayak its a beautiful little lake with a wonderful surprise on the other side ( and keep an eye out for the eagle who likes to hang out on the east end of the lake). If you like to hike, there's plenty of hiking for all skill levels. We stay in the tent only camping, it's the best, but even the rv/trailer loop is good. I did have to drop a star because of Royal Elk management, the two hosts Joan and John (I think that's his name), aren't the easiest to deal with. Joan isn't bad, but John is pretty much a jerk (keeping it kid appropriate). He does a pretty good job of keeping the bathrooms clean (which is appreciated) but his campside manner ends there. He's about the most unpleasant person I've ever encountered camping. He wears earbuds listening to something while he talks at you, drives around the campground extremely fast on the golf cart so you can never catch up to him to 'interrupt' his work. Several times he would pull up to our campground and stare at us and our site, presumably to see if rules were being followed, but not even a hint of a smile nor a response to trying to talk to him before speeding off again. We've camped at a few campgrounds managed by Royal Elk and there people are rarely who I'd like to interact with.
Sep 03, 2022 · MarkGreat campgrounds, well maintained, perfect lake to kayak/paddle board, sandy beaches, lots of hiking around. Was really impressed.
Sep 09, 2024 · Jacob Marler1st time here. We stayed at #62 which was a big lot w plenty of space to pitch up tent. Big lot enough to play frisbee. We brought cornhole. Plenty of areas for fishing.5 min walk to lake w beautiful landscapes. Smaller hiking trails along the lake (family friendly). Took a hike around the lake about 3 miles. Would definitely come back next time w rafts and inner tube for the lake.
