Wrights Lake Equestrian Camp Introduce
For those searching "Camping Near Me" with a particular interest in equestrian adventures, Wrights Lake Equestrian Camp, located at RQR7+QW, Lower Forni, CA 95720, USA, offers a specialized and highly regarded destination within the stunning High Sierra. This unique campground is specifically designed to accommodate campers traveling with horses or pack stock animals, providing a dedicated space for both human and equine companions to enjoy the beauty of the El Dorado National Forest.
The environment at Wrights Lake Equestrian Camp is undoubtedly a highlight, situated in an area "well known for its vistas, hiking, wildflowers and birds." Campers can expect to be surrounded by the majestic beauty of the High Sierra, with sweeping views and the vibrant colors of seasonal wildflowers. This natural setting also makes it an excellent spot for birdwatching and general nature observation. The campground itself is noted for being "clean," which contributes significantly to a pleasant stay. Accessing the camp is generally manageable, as "Wrights Lake Road is a viable option" in the summer, and even a "three horse goose neck and full sized pickup" can navigate it successfully. This suggests that while it's an immersive wilderness experience, it's not overly remote for equipped vehicles. However, campers should be aware that "some sites may prove challenging for modest sized rigs," implying that careful planning or scouting might be beneficial upon arrival.
Wrights Lake Equestrian Camp provides a set of specific services and features tailored to the needs of equestrian campers, alongside standard campground amenities:
Equestrian Accommodation: The primary service is its explicit allowance for "Anyone travelling with equestrian or pack stock animals." This is a crucial distinction, as many campgrounds do not permit horses. While not explicitly detailed, such camps typically offer corrals, hitching posts, or open areas for horses at or near the campsites, ensuring the animals' comfort and safety.
Campsite Amenities: Each campsite is well-equipped for traditional camping. Visitors will find "a nice picnic table, fire ring and large bear proof locker for food storage." The presence of large bear-proof lockers is particularly important in this wilderness area, ensuring proper food storage and minimizing human-wildlife conflicts.
Restroom Facilities: "Outhouses serviced daily" are available, ensuring cleanliness and basic sanitation for campers. While not flushing toilets, the regular servicing is a significant positive, contributing to comfort and hygiene in a rustic setting.
Water Access: "Water is present," which is a vital amenity for both campers and their animals. However, it's noted that it "has a low flow," so campers should manage their water usage accordingly and perhaps bring extra water for their stock if their needs are substantial. This indicates a more rustic water system rather than high-pressure faucets.
It's important to set expectations regarding the level of facilities. As a specialized equestrian camp in a natural forest setting, it prioritizes essential services over luxury amenities. Campers should be prepared for a rustic experience, bringing all necessary supplies for themselves and their animals.
The distinguishing features of Wrights Lake Equestrian Camp primarily revolve around its equestrian focus and its integration into the High Sierra environment. While it is a dedicated equestrian camp, a significant feature mentioned in a review concerns the horse trails themselves. It's noted that "the horse trails are limited, and the footing on most of them is mostly bad, with a lot of rock (boulders, gravel, cobbles, and long expanses of shelf rock) and many steps up and down, some quite large and narrow." This is a crucial piece of information for horse owners, indicating that specialized hoof protection (like boots or shoes) and experienced riders might be necessary for comfortable and safe travel on these trails. This aspect, while a potential drawback for some, highlights the rugged, untamed nature of the High Sierra trails. Conversely, for non-equestrian activities, the area is excellent for "hiking," with many trails accessible from the campground or nearby. The camp's location near Wrights Lake itself also implies opportunities for fishing, and potentially other water-based activities like kayaking or paddleboarding, though the focus is clearly on the equestrian aspect. The serene environment, free from excessive noise and light pollution, makes it ideal for observing "wildflowers and birds."
For local users searching "Camping Near Me" with an emphasis on equestrian camping, Wrights Lake Equestrian Camp offers compelling promotional points. Its primary draw is being one of the few designated campgrounds where "Anyone travelling with equestrian or pack stock animals is allowed here." This specialization makes it invaluable for horse owners. The consistently "clean" campground and daily serviced "outhouses" ensure a comfortable base camp. The provision of "large bear proof locker for food storage" is a critical safety feature in bear country, enhancing camper confidence. The natural beauty of the area, known for its "vistas, hiking, wildflowers and birds," adds immense value, promising a visually rich and immersive outdoor experience. While the caveat about "limited" and "rocky" horse trails is important for proper planning, it doesn't detract from the overall positive experience, as evidenced by a reviewer who would have given it "a five star review" otherwise. The camp's ability to accommodate larger rigs (like a "three horse goose neck and full sized pickup") for access, even if some sites are challenging, broadens its accessibility within the equestrian community. Wrights Lake Equestrian Camp is highly recommended for horse riders seeking a unique, scenic, and well-maintained base for their High Sierra adventures, provided they are prepared for the challenging nature of the local trails.

Wrights Lake Equestrian Camp Reviews
The campground itself is clean and the outhouses serviced daily. In the summer Wrights Lake Road is a viable option and we managed fine with a three horse goose neck and full sized pickup. Each camp site has a nice picnic table, fire ring and large bear proof locker for food storage. Some sites may prove challenging for modest sized rigs. Water is present but has a low flow. This would have been a five star review, but the horse trails are limited, and the footing on most of them is mostly bad, with a lot of rock (boulders, gravel, cobbles, and long expanses of shelf rock) and many steps up and down, some quite large and narrow.
