Ponderosa Group Campground Introduce
For local users in Kamas, Utah, and the surrounding areas who are searching within the platform category "camping near me" and specifically seeking a spacious and well-equipped campground for group outings, Ponderosa Group Campground presents an excellent option. Located off Highway 150 E Mirror Lake Hwy in the Wasatch Cache National Forest near Kamas, UT 84036, USA, this campground is highly praised as an "amazing group campsite" with numerous appealing features. For inquiries, you can contact the same phone number as Yellow Pine Campground, (385) 273-1100 or +1 385-273-1100, suggesting a shared management or reservation system.
The environment of Ponderosa Group Campground is described as particularly inviting for group gatherings. The presence of "lots of trees to hammock on" indicates a well-forested area providing shade and opportunities for relaxation. A "nice gathering place in the center" suggests a communal area designed to facilitate interaction and activities for larger groups. Furthermore, the campground boasts a "beautiful trail leading up the mountain," offering opportunities for hiking and exploring the surrounding natural beauty directly from the campsite. The fact that the site and trail are exclusively for the booked group enhances the sense of privacy and immersion in nature.
One of the standout features of Ponderosa Group Campground is its ample space. One reviewer noted that it comfortably accommodated "6 families" and estimated that it could potentially have room for "at least 20 cars and tents." This makes it an ideal location for large groups, including multiple families, clubs, or other organizations looking to camp together. The generous space allows for comfortable setup of individual camping areas while still providing a central gathering point.
In terms of services and facilities, the campground is reported to be well-maintained. The reviewer who communicated with the hosts at Yellow Pine Campground (presumably managing Ponderosa as well) found them to be "so pleasant and happy to help." This positive interaction suggests a responsive and helpful management team. The campground also features a "vault toilet" which was noted to be "so clean," highlighting a commitment to hygiene even in a more rustic camping setting.
A significant feature for outdoor enthusiasts is the direct access to a "beautiful trail leading up the mountain." This provides an immediate opportunity for hiking and exploring the scenic terrain surrounding the campground without the need to travel to a separate trailhead. The availability of such a trail adds significant value for groups interested in outdoor activities.
However, there is a crucial consideration regarding access to Ponderosa Group Campground. One reviewer described "the road getting to the campsite" as "short, but it's extremely steep, rutted, and gravelly." This challenging road condition made it difficult for a Chevy Traverse to ascend, while vehicles like Toyotas and Subarus (typically with better traction) had no issues. The reviewer strongly advised against taking a sedan and recommended an "all wheel or four-wheel drive vehicle" to access the campground safely. This is a vital piece of information for local users planning a trip to Ponderosa Group Campground.

Ponderosa Group Campground Reviews
This is an amazing group campsite! Lots of trees to hammock on, a nice gathering place in the center, and a beautiful trail leading up the mountain. It was so nice having the site and trail for just our group. There was plenty of space for the 6 families that stayed. I could see it potentially having room for at least 20 cars and tents. The only drawback was the road getting to the campsite. It's short, but it's extremely steep, rutted, and gravelly. I had a hard time getting my Chevy Traverse up. Everyone else had Toyotas or Subarus, and they didn't have a problem. I wouldn't take a sedan; you'd definitely need an all wheel or four-wheel drive vehicle. I talked with the hosts at Yellow Pine Campground before heading up to make sure we were clear to occupy the site. They were so pleasant and happy to help. They kept the site and vault toilet so clean.

Feb 28, 2025 · Bruce LualemagaThis campground is extremely beautiful and just over the hill from the highway so you have no view or sound from passing cars. It feels remote without being too far from town. It’s also great for large groups!
Sep 28, 2023 · Sean SmithWe reserved from the 12th - 15th of April. The camp hosts had our site clearly labeled and raked the site clean of the pine needles which was nice. We had an issue with an ATV riding around the site, and the hosts quickly corrected the riders that use of ATV's is not allowed in the grounds. The one issue with the facility was that the dumping station was closed, and so we had to drive all the way back to Queen Creek with waste tanks full.We had a bit of noise from the highway, but our site was very close to the entrance. if you drive further into the campground, I'm sure you won't hear the traffic on the highway. It's advisable to bring fire wood with you. It is for sale at the campground, but you can get it a lot cheaper in town. Charcoal grills ar also available so bring a bag of that too!Lots of places to explore off the camp grounds. Once you walk out the entrance of the camp you can let your dogs off of their leash. We plan on returning
Apr 16, 2013 · John OwensBest campground we've stayed at. Very clean bathrooms. Johnny and Susan are terrific camp hosts, very friendly and kept the grounds very well maintained. Will be returning.
