Are you searching for the perfect camping getaway near you? Look no further than Zilpo H Loop Campground, a hidden gem situated in the picturesque landscape of Salt Lick, Kentucky. Located at Heron Rd Y, Salt Lick, KY 40371, USA, Zilpo H Loop offers a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in nature's tranquility while enjoying the beauty of Cave Run Lake. For inquiries or reservations, you can reach them at (877) 444-6777 or +1 877-444-6777.
Zilpo H Loop is a well-maintained campground renowned for its spacious sites and breathtaking views of Cave Run Lake. Imagine waking up to the gentle sounds of nature and stepping out to panoramic vistas of sparkling water. The campsites themselves are thoughtfully designed with an asphalt drive for easy access and compacted pea gravel railroad tie areas for comfortable setup. Many sites boast the added convenience of two picnic tables, providing ample space for dining and relaxation. Furthermore, each site is equipped with metal posts featuring hooks, perfect for hanging laundry lines, lanterns, or even garbage bags, demonstrating attention to detail and camper convenience. The sites are also noted for being exceptionally level, ensuring a hassle-free setup for both tents and RVs.
The natural environment surrounding Zilpo H Loop is teeming with wildlife. While enjoying the peace and quiet, you might encounter raccoons, bears, and wild turkeys. It's crucial to be mindful of these wild inhabitants and take necessary precautions to secure all food and supplies safely inside your vehicle or RV. Campers have reported instances of raccoons actively seeking out unsecured food, including the destruction of styrofoam coolers. This highlights the importance of responsible camping practices to coexist peacefully with the local fauna.
For those looking to explore the stunning Cave Run Lake, Zilpo H Loop provides easy access to its expansive waters. Kayaking is a popular activity, allowing you to discover hidden coves and enjoy the sheer size and beauty of the lake. Fishing enthusiasts will find the area peaceful, although some visitors have noted that catching fish can be challenging. Nevertheless, the serene atmosphere makes it a worthwhile experience for anglers of all levels.
The campground offers certain amenities, though some aspects require consideration. While the shower houses are available, some visitors have reported a significant presence of spiders and other insects. If you are particularly sensitive to this, it might be something to prepare for. On a more positive note, the shower water has been consistently reported as hot. The bathrooms are described as institutional, with some signs of wear such as peeling paint on the floor and lint in the shower drains. Additionally, the bathroom lights do not turn on during the day, relying solely on skylights for illumination.
One of the standout features of Zilpo H Loop is the exceptional service provided by the camp host. Danny, in particular, has been repeatedly praised for his friendly and helpful demeanor. He is knowledgeable about the area and readily offers assistance to campers. In one instance, Danny even provided timely warning about an impending tornado, directing campers to the safest shelter. This level of attentiveness and care significantly enhances the camping experience.
It's important to note that certain services are limited within the campground itself. There is no laundry service available on-site, requiring a drive of approximately one hour to Morehead, KY, where a fast and efficient laundromat with multiple machines can be found. Additionally, the store located at the beach area appears to be non-operational and not set up for future business. Therefore, it is highly recommended that you bring all the food, drinks, and essential items you will need for your stay, as it is an hour's drive to the nearest supplies.
Despite its somewhat remote location, Zilpo H Loop surprisingly offers cell phone service. This can be a significant advantage for those who wish to stay connected or need it for safety reasons. The presence of a cell tower on the way out to the H loop ensures a more reliable connection than one might typically expect in a mountainous region.
In summary, Zilpo H Loop Campground offers a tranquil and scenic camping experience near you, perfect for those seeking a peaceful retreat amidst the beauty of Cave Run Lake. While some amenities may be basic or require off-site access, the spacious campsites, stunning lake views, and the friendly service of the camp host contribute to a memorable outdoor adventure. Be prepared for wildlife encounters and the need to bring all your supplies, and you'll be rewarded with a serene escape in the heart of Kentucky's natural beauty. Despite some minor inconveniences, many visitors express their intention to return, highlighting the overall appeal and charm of Zilpo H Loop.

Zilpo H Loop Reviews
Well kept sites with great views of the lake. Definitely off the beaten path and peaceful. The shower houses on the other hand are full of spiders and other creatures which I normally don’t mind but they were literally everywhere so we didn’t use them. Trails were pretty overgrown. The camp host friendly and knowledgeable of the area. Pets are not permitted on the beach or in buildings. The store at the beach area was not open nor did it look set up to future business. Do not use styrofoam coolers as we witnessed a raccoon destroying one at of our neighboring sites. Overall, I would still return and recommend.
May 13, 2023 · AshleyHuge camp sites. Two picnic tables on most sites. Asphalt drive for site and then compacted pea gravel railroad tie areas for the rest of the campsite. They also provide metal posts with hooks to hang laundry line, lanterns or garbage. Extremely level sites. Lots of wild animals, racoons, bears and wild turkeys. Found a raccoon under our truck. Secure all food and supplies safely inside car or RV. You can not leave anything out at all. We came in May; only one other person camping.Bathrooms are institutional. Paint on floor peeling. Gross lint covering shower drain. However, the shower water was hot! Lights in the bathroom do not turn on during the day. There is no way to turn them on either. Thank God for the skylights!Cave Run Lake is amazing! We kayaked today. It's huge! We saw lots of fishing but no catching. Fisherman all said how peaceful it is. Totally agree! No laundry service. Had to drive an hour to Morehead, KY to find a laundromat, which was superfast, efficient with many machines to be done quickly!Super quiet campground. Very remote. Bring all the food, drinks and items you will need with you. None of the stores are open at the campground and it looks like they will not be opening any time soon. It's an hour to get any supplies. Thankfully, they answer the phone when you call the number on the map. Danny our camp host was super friendly and helpful. Told us of the impending tornado and to seek shelter in the shower stall. Thankfully, it was just a rain storm.Surprisingly, cell service is available. Up here in the mountains we did not expect to have any connection. There is a cell tower on the way out to H loop! Hallelujah!
May 17, 2023 · Maria Hidalgo DolanWe've stayed at Zilpo two times this summer. The first time was in F loop and this time in H Loop. H is the favorite so far because it has the best views. We love it here and are sure to come back every year.
Aug 05, 2023 · Shana BodnerWonderful primitive camp ground. Large and private sites. Many with direct access to the water. Nice beach, bath houses were clean, and all around very nice. It is pretty remote, so bring anything you need!
