For local Kentucky residents and travelers seeking a distinctive "camping near me" experience, The Landing Strip Campground, located at 491 Filtration Plant Rd, Morehead, KY 40351, USA, offers a unique setting with a history. Situated on the grounds of an old airfield, this campground provides a novel backdrop for outdoor stays, combining quiet surroundings and scenic views with the practical amenities needed for a comfortable visit. With positive customer reviews highlighting its peaceful atmosphere, friendly management, and suitability for both RVs and tents, The Landing Strip Campground presents an intriguing option for various types of campers.
The environment of The Landing Strip Campground in Morehead, Kentucky, is uniquely shaped by its history as an old airfield. This linear layout, as mentioned in a review, offers a different camping experience compared to traditional campgrounds nestled in wooded areas. Guests can likely expect expansive, relatively flat terrain, with the former runway providing a significant paved area. This open layout could offer nice views of the surrounding landscape, as noted by a visitor. While shade might be less prevalent in the more open areas, the unique character of camping on an airfield is a significant environmental feature. The reviews suggest a quiet and safe environment, "off the beaten path" yet accessible. The potential for endless biking opportunities along the old runway adds a recreational element directly within the campground itself, making it particularly appealing to families with children.
Based on the customer reviews, The Landing Strip Campground offers a range of services and features designed to cater to a variety of camping needs:
- Full Hookups for RVs: One review specifically mentions "full hookups for RVs," indicating that the campground provides electric, water, and sewer connections at its RV sites. This is a significant amenity for those traveling with recreational vehicles.
- Large Paved Area for Tents: The linear layout and former airfield provide a "large paved area for tents," which is unusual for campgrounds and could be particularly beneficial for stability and staying clean, especially during wet conditions.
- Quiet Atmosphere: Multiple reviewers describe the campground as "very quiet," suggesting a peaceful and relaxing environment away from the noise of more crowded areas.
- Nice Views: The open airfield setting allows for potentially expansive and pleasant views of the surrounding area.
- Kind and Respectful Management: Positive interactions with the management are highlighted in a review, indicating a welcoming and helpful staff.
- Super Friendly Owners and Team: Another review praises Brandon and his family and team as "super friendly," reinforcing the positive customer service experience.
- Family Friendly: The campground is described as "super family friendly," with the biking opportunities on the runway being a major attraction for children.
- Safe Environment: Despite being "off the beaten path," the campground is noted as being safe, providing peace of mind for visitors.
- Suitability for Rallies and Events: The linear layout and combination of full RV hookups and a large paved area make the campground "the perfect venue for rallies and events where you want full hookups for RVs but also a large paved area for tents, displays, and exhibitions."
- Accommodation for Larger RVs: The campground can accommodate larger RVs, with a recommendation to opt for sites along the runway for easier access, especially for vehicles as long as 65 feet.
While not explicitly stated, it is reasonable to assume that the campground also provides essential amenities such as restroom facilities and waste disposal. The "full hookups for RVs" strongly suggest the presence of a central water source and a sewage disposal system. Given its recent development ("It's new and a work in progress"), the campground may be continuing to add or improve its facilities.
The key features of The Landing Strip Campground are its unique setting on an old airfield, its quiet and peaceful atmosphere, the friendly and helpful management, and its suitability for both RVs (with full hookups) and tents (on a large paved area). The endless biking opportunities on the runway are a significant draw for families. Its potential as a venue for rallies and events due to its unusual layout and facilities is also a notable feature. The ability to accommodate large RVs is another advantage for a specific segment of the camping community.

The Landing Strip Campground Reviews
We've been here twice. Very quiet. Nice views. Management is kind and respectful.
Apr 18, 2025 · SonjaThis was a really neat campground and we were so happy to stay here over the Memorial Day weekend. Brandon and his family and team are super friendly. It's new and a work in progress but we loved the layout on an old airfield. Super family friendly and your kids will love the endless biking opportunities up and down the runway. It's off the beaten path but safe. We loved it.Because of the linear layout, this is the perfect venue for rallies and events where you want full hookups for RVs but also a large paved area for tents, displays, and exhibitions. So wish we took photos while we were here. Come see it for yourself. If you're a larger RV, opt for the sites along the runway and take your time on the small road coming in. We are 65' and were fine.
