One of the unique features of San Onofre Beach Camp Pendleton is its location within a military base. This aspect offers a different kind of camping experience compared to civilian-operated RV parks. While it may come with certain regulations and security protocols, it also provides a sense of security and a unique atmosphere. Access to the base might require specific procedures, so it's advisable to inquire about these when making reservations. The presence of the military base adds a layer of history and a distinct character to the camping experience.
Beyond the immediate environment and services, the location of San Onofre Beach Camp Pendleton offers proximity to the charming city of San Clemente. Just a short drive away, San Clemente provides opportunities for dining at local restaurants and enjoying the vibrant atmosphere of its bars. This accessibility allows campers to easily venture out for a meal, explore the local scene, or stock up on supplies. However, it's important to note the feedback regarding parking in San Clemente, which has been described as "horrible." To navigate this, utilizing a taxi service that has base access is recommended, ensuring a hassle-free trip to and from the city.
Considering the user reviews, it's important to have a balanced perspective. One reviewer mentioned paying $100 for "two nights" and "sleeping in the dirt" but stated they "enjoyed every second!" This suggests that while the individual sites might be basic, the overall experience and the location's appeal outweighed any perceived lack of luxury. The same reviewer also advised bringing earplugs due to potential noise from a train at 1:00 am. This is valuable information for prospective campers to prepare accordingly and ensure a more restful night's sleep.
Another reviewer who spent a week in an RV highlighted the availability of restrooms and showers, further confirming these essential services. Their recommendation to use a taxi with base access for travel to San Clemente underscores the parking challenges in the nearby town and provides a practical tip for visitors. These firsthand accounts offer valuable insights into the realities of camping at San Onofre Beach Camp Pendleton.

San Onofre Beach Camp Pendleton Reviews
Paid $100 to sleep in the dirt for a so nights and enjoyed every second! Bring earplugs, the train can be loud at 1:00 am.
Mar 23, 2025 · Bud TurnerSpent a week in an RV. Restrooms and showers available. San Clemente is nearby for lunch and bars. Parking is horrible in town. Use a taxi that can get on base.
Apr 15, 2025 · R DyerPretty amazing campground. Focus is on surfing, watching or participating and there is quite a bit of beach action going down. Some complain about the highway noise and trains at night, we were cool with that. Laundry is right there, sites are level with campfires, picnic table and a great view. We have returned here again and again and the only thing I can say negative is FIX THE WEBSITE.
Apr 14, 2024 · Kristof LanglandThis beach is not very kid friendly due to the rocks and sometimes big waves, the water also gets deep really fast so if you don’t know how to swim you can’t really go here. I stayed in the cottages and they are low quality cottages. Outside of the water it isn’t too bad, there is a playground and good views.
Jun 14, 2024 · Clutch CurveWe were able to get camping reservations on base. They have facilities for showing (which were very clean) beach was clean and there was an historic clubhouse but I feel as if it was a missed opportunity. A bar overlooking the ocean would have been a big money grabber.Overall clean beach with amazing sights
