The Environment: Heart of the Hudson Valley's Natural Splendor
The Agatha A. Durland Scout Reservation is located in the heart of the Hudson Valley, a region renowned for its stunning natural landscapes, rolling hills, and picturesque scenery. The reviews highlight the "carried terrain," suggesting a varied topography that adds interest and challenge to hiking and exploring within the reservation. This diverse landscape likely includes woodlands, open areas, and possibly rocky outcroppings, all contributing to a rich and engaging outdoor environment.
The reservation boasts access to at least two significant water bodies: Clear Lake and Mud Lake (also known as Sperling Pond). Clear Lake is noted for its suitability for swimming and fishing, providing opportunities for aquatic recreation and relaxation during warmer months. The presence of a lake enhances the overall appeal of the campground, offering a focal point for activities and scenic beauty.
Mud Lake, or Sperling Pond, while described as "nice to look at," has limited access for fishing, suggesting it may serve more as a natural feature contributing to the aesthetic appeal of the reservation. The presence of multiple water bodies indicates a diverse ecosystem within the property, potentially attracting a variety of wildlife and offering different natural environments to explore.
The mention of "miles and miles of well-marked trails for hiking" is a significant environmental feature, appealing to those who enjoy exploring on foot. Well-maintained and clearly marked trails ensure that hikers of various skill levels can navigate the terrain safely and enjoy the natural beauty of the Hudson Valley. These trails likely wind through different types of landscapes within the reservation, offering varied experiences and opportunities for nature observation.
The fact that campsites are located both "near parkland" and as a "hike in" provides options for different camping preferences. Parkland-adjacent sites might offer easier access and potentially more open space, while hike-in sites cater to those seeking a more secluded and immersive wilderness experience, requiring a bit more effort to reach.
Services and Amenities: Well-Maintained Facilities and Helpful Staff
While the Agatha A. Durland Scout Reservation may primarily serve Scouting groups, the positive reviews from what appear to be non-Scout visitors indicate that its facilities and services are well-maintained and accessible. The "well maintained" cabins are a significant amenity, offering a more sheltered and comfortable accommodation option, especially appealing during the "cooler season." The availability of cabins extends the usability of the reservation beyond just tent camping, allowing for year-round enjoyment.
The latrines are also noted as being "well maintained," highlighting a commitment to hygiene and cleanliness within the campground facilities. Clean and functional restroom facilities are essential for a positive camping experience.
The staff at the reservation are consistently described as "very friendly and helpful." Positive interactions with staff can greatly enhance a visitor's experience, providing assistance, information, and a welcoming atmosphere.
Access to Clear Lake for swimming and fishing indicates the provision of recreational opportunities managed by the reservation. This might include designated swimming areas and potentially rules or permits for fishing to ensure the sustainability of the lake's ecosystem.
The well-planned layout of the reservation, with "lots of room to explore," suggests that the property is spacious and offers ample opportunities for outdoor activities and discovering different natural areas. This contributes to a sense of freedom and adventure for visitors.
While "parking at the cabins is very limited," this is an important piece of information for those considering cabin rentals. It suggests that visitors staying in cabins may need to plan accordingly for parking, potentially involving a short walk from a designated parking area to their accommodation.
The availability of well-marked trails implies ongoing maintenance and a commitment to providing a safe and enjoyable hiking experience for visitors.

Nov 17, 2023 · Greg CarusoBeautiful! The cabins are well maintained and so are the latrines. Well planned out with lots of room to explore. Parking at the cabins is very limited. Miles and Miles of well marked trails for hiking. Access to Clear lake for swimming and fishing. Mud lake also known as sperling pond is nice to look at but access for fishing is very limited. Hope to be able to visit again. Staff was very friendly and helpful.
Jun 26, 2022 · Brian KuchmakDurland. Formerly known as clear lake scout camp is awesome any time of year. Whether you camp in one of the many tent sites leantoos or cabins there is plenty for scouts to do, see, experience and explore.
Feb 16, 2019 · Charlie KulinsJust wrapped up our Klondike Derby. Staff and volunteers set up the schedule and check in stations so that we maintained social distancing. Scouts had a great time. Can't wait to be able to camp here again.
Jan 18, 2021 · Casa DeSolaA scout reservation with boating, an archery range, a BB gun range. Cabins are available for rent. Some have air conditioning. The best way to take advantage of the facilities is to sign up for a family camping weekend through your council.
