Apgar Campground Introduce
For local adventurers seeking "camping near me" within the majestic expanse of Glacier National Park, Apgar Campground presents an excellent option. Situated at US Hwy 2, West Glacier, MT 59901, USA, Apgar Campground serves as a primary gateway to the park's wonders, offering convenient access to key attractions and essential services. Based on available customer reviews, Apgar Campground provides a range of experiences depending on the season and the specific loop within the campground.
Environment: Wooded Settings and Lakeside Proximity
Apgar Campground is described as heavily wooded, particularly in Loop B, which offers a more rustic and natural camping environment. The dense tree cover provides shade and a sense of privacy between campsites. This setting is ideal for those who appreciate being immersed in nature. Furthermore, the campground boasts a highly desirable location with an easy walk to the stunning Lake McDonald, the largest lake in Glacier National Park. This proximity allows campers to readily enjoy the lake's recreational opportunities and scenic beauty. Additionally, its location near one of the park's visitor centers provides convenient access to information, maps, and ranger programs, enhancing the overall visitor experience.
Services and Amenities: Varying by Season and Loop
The services and amenities available at Apgar Campground appear to vary depending on the time of year and the specific camping loop. One reviewer mentions that during winter camping (when only Loop B is open and free), the facilities are "pretty barebones," consisting primarily of vault toilets with the added benefit of lights. This suggests that during the off-season, campers should be prepared for a more primitive camping experience with limited amenities.
In contrast, another reviewer specifically mentions the availability of "running water toilets and a sink to wash dishes" in Loop C, noting that the water was cold. This indicates that at least during the warmer seasons when Loop C is open, more convenient restroom facilities are provided. The presence of a sink for dishwashing is a significant amenity for campers looking for a more comfortable stay. It is important to note that the review explicitly states the water was cold, so campers should plan accordingly.
Based on these observations, it can be inferred that Apgar Campground likely offers a range of amenities that are seasonally adjusted. During peak season, more loops may be open, potentially providing a greater number of campsites and a wider array of services, including the flush toilets and dishwashing sinks mentioned in Loop C. Conversely, during the winter, with limited loops open, the services are more basic.
Features: Location, Accessibility, and Seasonal Opportunities
Apgar Campground's key features revolve around its prime location within Glacier National Park and its accessibility to various points of interest:
- Proximity to Lake McDonald: The easy walking distance to Lake McDonald is a significant draw, offering opportunities for boating, swimming (where permitted and safe), and enjoying the scenic shoreline. The lake is a central feature of the Apgar Village area.
- Access to a Visitor Center: Being located near a visitor center provides campers with convenient access to park information, ranger assistance, educational exhibits, and potentially shuttle services to other parts of the park. This is particularly beneficial for first-time visitors or those looking to plan their park explorations.
- Wooded Campsites: The heavily wooded environment in at least one loop (Loop B) offers a more secluded and natural camping experience, appealing to those seeking a traditional outdoor setting.
- Winter Camping Opportunity: The availability of free winter camping in Loop B, even with limited amenities, is a unique feature for hardy individuals looking to experience the park in its quieter, snow-covered state. This provides an affordable option for those equipped for cold-weather camping.
- In-Park Location: A significant advantage of Apgar Campground is being situated within Glacier National Park itself. This eliminates the need for daily park entry and allows campers to readily access trails, scenic drives, and other park attractions early in the morning or later in the evening, potentially avoiding crowds.

Apgar Campground Reviews
Winter camping, loop B is free (the only one available). Heavily wooded, limited Verizon signal, vault toilets had lights which were a nice touch. It's pretty barebones but for free? In Glacier? Can't beat it.
Dec 27, 2024 · Jeremy PeltoReally liked the location of the campground. The running water toilets and sink to wash dishes was really nice to have- no issue that it was only cold water at loop C. Easy walk to Lake McDonald and one of the visitor centers. And nice to already be in the park each day.
Oct 09, 2024 · Tovi TedrowWe loved our site D160 and it was quiet, peaceful and close to Apgar Village and Visitor Center. The path to the Visitor Center and Apgar Village was great for walking the dogs and getting to the lake. The bathrooms were clean and the rangers did a great job of enforcing rules to keep people safe and generators only running when allowed. The showers were definitely not the best and a long line since the campground was full and only had a few showers. We really enjoyed our stay and will be back to Glacier in the future.
Sep 21, 2024 · Lisa LundBathrooms were clean. Several had options that didn't work such as sink in one, door in another. We were the to rough it. Really. But, overall the campground was clean. Hosts were friendly. When wanting to go on to Going to the Sun road from most Northern road, the way they have it blocked off during the day, you can only go back to the Village to turn around and head north again. Or be shunned by a Ranger for doing a three point turn around on a Federal road.Evening programs at the amphitheater are informative and fun. Kids get into them. They have morning programs as well.
Jun 25, 2024 · Donda WalshOnly 3 shower stalls in the entire campground for over 200 camp sites. Yes I’m happy there was at least a shower, however, the campground doesn’t seem to be able to provide basic human necessities like showering for the quantity of people that are staying. You have to wait in line for a long time to shower.
