Assateague National Seashore Campground Introduce
For local users seeking a unique "camping near me" experience that combines the beauty of the coast with the wonder of wildlife, Assateague National Seashore Campground, located at Assateague National Seashore Campgrounds Spot B33, Berlin, MD 21811, USA, offers an unforgettable setting. Situated within the protected Assateague National Seashore, this campground is renowned for its pristine beaches, stunning night skies, and, most notably, the presence of wild horses that roam freely throughout the area. While the natural environment receives high praise, it's important for prospective campers to be aware of certain aspects highlighted in visitor reviews to ensure a well-prepared and enjoyable stay.
The environment of Assateague National Seashore Campground is a primary draw for many visitors. The campground's location within a national seashore means campers are immersed in a natural landscape characterized by sandy beaches, dunes, marshlands, and the Atlantic Ocean. One reviewer enthusiastically awards 5 stars specifically for the "night sky full of stars and the environment," emphasizing the exceptional stargazing opportunities due to the lack of urban light pollution. The overall scenery and the unique coastal ecosystem are consistently cited as major attractions, offering a picturesque backdrop for a camping getaway. The proximity to the beach provides opportunities for swimming, sunbathing, beachcombing, and enjoying the sounds of the ocean.
However, some reviews point out certain downsides related to the campground's layout and facilities. One camper mentions that "campgrounds are some small that you can't even gather around bonfire." This suggests that the size of individual campsites might be limited, potentially impacting the ability of groups to comfortably congregate around a fire. This is an important consideration for those who prioritize communal gatherings during their camping trips. Additionally, the limited number of electric car chargers, with only 2 available out of over 50 campsites, is noted as a potential inconvenience for electric vehicle owners.
Another environmental factor to consider is the natural growth within some campsites. One review mentions that "some camp grounds overgrown with things and trees at some camps that you can't see stars around, not great for stargazing." This indicates that the level of vegetation at certain sites might obstruct the expansive views of the night sky, which is a key reason why some visitors choose Assateague. It also suggests that the level of maintenance regarding vegetation might vary between campsites.
A significant feature of Assateague National Seashore, and consequently its campground, is the presence of wild horses. While these majestic animals are a unique and captivating aspect of the park, one reviewer shared a cautionary experience: "The horses took over our camp both days so we couldn’t cook anything we brought or relax by our fire." This highlights a potential challenge for campers, particularly those planning to cook outdoors and relax at their campsite. The wild horses, while fascinating to observe, can be intrusive and may require campers to take extra precautions to secure food and belongings. The reviewer ultimately cut their trip short due to this issue, suggesting it can significantly impact the camping experience for some.
Despite these challenges, the friendly nature of the staff is mentioned as a positive aspect. This can contribute to a more pleasant overall experience, as helpful and accommodating staff can assist with any concerns or provide guidance during your stay.
Based on the reviews, the ideal camper for Assateague National Seashore Campground might be someone with an RV or those who primarily plan to enjoy the scenery and the beach and are less focused on cooking extensively at their campsite or gathering around a large bonfire. The unique opportunity to witness wild horses in their natural habitat and the exceptional stargazing (from less overgrown sites) remain significant draws. The affordability of camping within a national seashore can also be a compelling factor for local users.
Promotional information for Assateague National Seashore Campground often highlights the unique experience of camping alongside wild horses and enjoying the pristine coastal environment. The opportunity to fall asleep to the sound of the ocean waves and wake up to the sight of wild horses grazing nearby is a powerful allure. The national seashore status also implies a commitment to preserving the natural beauty and ecological integrity of the area, which can be a significant draw for environmentally conscious campers. Local users might find promotional materials on the National Park Service website or through local tourism boards, showcasing the scenic beauty, wildlife viewing opportunities, and recreational activities available at Assateague.
For local users considering Assateague National Seashore Campground for their next "camping near me" trip, it is crucial to weigh the exceptional natural environment and unique wildlife encounters against the potential limitations of campsite size, vegetation affecting stargazing at some sites, and the need to manage interactions with the wild horses. Being prepared for these aspects, such as having secure food storage and understanding park guidelines regarding wildlife, can help mitigate potential inconveniences. The stunning night skies and the opportunity to camp in a truly wild coastal setting make Assateague a distinctive option for those seeking an adventurous and nature-filled getaway close to home. It is recommended to check the National Park Service website for the most up-to-date information on campsite availability, regulations, and any advisories regarding wildlife interactions before planning your visit.

Assateague National Seashore Campground Reviews
The camping idea is perfect and 5 stars for it, for the night sky full of stars and the environment.Downside about camping there, campgrounds are some small that you can't even gather around bonfire, electric car chargers only at 2 camps out of 50 some camps...Some camp grounds overgrown with things and trees at some camps that you can't see stars around, not great for stargazing, and that's why I come there because cities don't have it at all...And friendly is a plus...
Sep 13, 2024 · Серёжка КартошкаWe camped here- we will definitely be back for the scenery and the beach but never again for camping. The horses took over our camp both days so we couldn’t cook anything we brought or relax by our fire. We left a day early because of this. If you have an RV, or don’t plan on sticking around your fire for food, this is the place for you.
Jun 26, 2024 · Shannon EnglishAssateague Island National Campground was one of my best camping experiences thus far.Although it is boondocking (dry camping without water or electric) I was fine with my R-Pod trailer with just running a small generator occasionally to keep my trailer battery topped off.The campground is well thought out with many drive in sites. I stayed in Loop C Bayside. It was just lovely! Many, many beautiful songbirds, raptors, and wild horses EVERYWHERE!Bike rentals are available at the Visitor Center, and there are, also many planned activities and guided nature tours. The beach side is beautiful with miles of pristine beach to walk in. I visited in November, so it was very quiet.I plan to return many, many more times!
Nov 27, 2023 · Esme WestBe warned: Everything here wants to either eat you, or eat everything you own. Camped a few nights on the Oceanside, not on the dunes but in the cleared brush behind the dunes. The flies and mosquitos were ungodly and relentless, undeterred by even the strongest DEET bug sprays or multiple layers of clothing. They WILL find a way to bite and devour you during all hours of the day and night. I saw multiple families camping on the dunes have their tents blown away or be unable to set them up due to winds. We had a gang of horses try to steal our s’mores that we were actively roasting and eating. We kept all our food stored except for what we were actively using and the horses smelled it from a mile away. During the night raccoons went into the locked table and stole my toiletry bag. I would like to say this place was everything I imagined (I spent years trying to get a reservation here), but it was hellish. I’m an avid camper and prefer to spend my time outdoors, but this place made me question my sanity. The sights and horses were beautiful, but you will not leave unscathed. Better to come during the day and camp some place else.
Jan 29, 2025 · C. Elise GReally enjoyed this place. The beach is super clean and quiet not as much traffic of people compared to Ocean City. We got to see a couple wild horses, I’m not much of a swimmer that’s the reason why I couldn’t stay in the water. The waves are high tho and no life guard in the side of the beach that we visited. Swim at your own risk, the cost for the week pass was $25 but totally worth it 😊
