At the Ridge Introduce
For those in North Carolina searching for "camping near me," At the Ridge Campground, located at 153 N Fork River Rd, Balsam Grove, NC 28708, USA, presents an option with both positive aspects and areas for potential improvement, according to recent customer reviews. Situated in a prime location near several natural attractions, this campground offers a unique opportunity to explore the beauty of the region. You can reach them at (828) 877-2267 or +1 828-877-2267 for inquiries and bookings.
One enthusiastic camper described At the Ridge as a "very nice camping spot" and specifically mentioned the presence of a "bath house." They also lauded Tom, the owner, as "awesome & very accommodating!" This positive review highlights the campground's favorable location, making it a convenient base for visiting the Nantahala National Forest, Pisgah National Forest, Gorges State Park, and Duke Energy's Bear Creek Station. The abundance of "wonderful waterfalls to see in the area" further enhances the appeal for nature lovers and those seeking scenic excursions near their campsite.
However, another recent review offers a contrasting perspective regarding the facilities. This camper stated, "There is no real bath house here. It is a very very rundown wooden building with no hot water except in the shower stall. Water backs up when showering." This feedback suggests that while a structure intended as a bathhouse exists, its condition and functionality might not meet the expectations of all campers. The lack of consistent hot water and issues with drainage in the shower are significant points to consider for those prioritizing comfort and convenience.
Furthermore, this second reviewer noted the absence of trash pickup at the individual campsites. They reported being directed to an "old trailer requiring a ladder" to dispose of their trash, which could present challenges for some campers. Despite these concerns about the facilities, this reviewer echoed the sentiment about the owner, describing him as "very nice and attentive," and acknowledged the loveliness of the land itself. Nevertheless, they concluded that they would not return without upgrades to the facilities.
Considering these contrasting viewpoints, local users searching for "camping near me" should weigh the attractive location and the owner's attentiveness against the reported condition of the bathhouse and the trash disposal situation. The environment surrounding At the Ridge appears to be a significant draw, with its proximity to renowned natural areas offering ample opportunities for outdoor activities and sightseeing.
Environment: The campground's location in Balsam Grove places it within easy reach of the stunning natural landscapes of western North Carolina. The Nantahala National Forest is the largest national forest in North Carolina, encompassing a vast array of habitats, from high mountain peaks to river gorges. It offers countless opportunities for hiking, backpacking, fishing, and scenic drives. Similarly, the Pisgah National Forest is known for its rugged terrain, waterfalls, and diverse plant and animal life, providing further avenues for exploration and outdoor recreation. Gorges State Park is another nearby gem, featuring dramatic waterfalls, steep river gorges, and unique ecological communities. The mention of numerous waterfalls in the area suggests that campers at At the Ridge can readily access some of the region's most beautiful natural features.
Services and Amenities (as reported by reviewers): Based on the customer feedback, the services and amenities at At the Ridge appear to be somewhat basic. The presence of a structure referred to as a "bath house" is noted, but its condition seems to be a point of concern, with reports of it being rundown, lacking consistent hot water (except in the shower), and experiencing drainage issues. The absence of individual campsite trash pickup and the need to use a potentially inconvenient dumpster are also important factors to consider. However, the positive mention of the owner's attentiveness suggests a personalized and helpful level of service.
Features and Activities: The primary feature of At the Ridge Campground seems to be its strategic location near a wealth of natural attractions. Campers can easily access the extensive trail systems, scenic overlooks, and recreational opportunities within the Nantahala and Pisgah National Forests. The proximity to Gorges State Park offers additional opportunities for hiking and viewing impressive waterfalls. Duke Energy's Bear Creek Station might be of interest for those curious about local infrastructure or perhaps offers access to nearby trails or viewpoints (though this is not explicitly stated). The abundance of waterfalls in the vicinity is a significant feature for those who enjoy chasing cascades and experiencing the power and beauty of nature.

Sep 24, 2024 · Lori SearsThere is no real bath house here. It is a very very rundown wooden building with no hot water except in the shower stall. Water backs up when showering. There is no trash pickup. We were told to take the trash to a dumpster but it was an old trailer requiring a ladder to be able to put the trash in it. The owner is very nice and attentive, and the land is lovely, but I would not return unless there are upgrades.
Jun 21, 2024 · Harriette NovakWe stayed in cabin 6 which was a quaint rustic cabin on the water with a serene and picturesque setting. At The Ridge offered a unique opportunity to enjoy nature while still having basic amenities. The cabin was clean and had essential appliances like an in wall heating/air conditioning unit, refrigerator, microwave and coffee pot. There was also a nearby shower, bath house, and water spigot. We did bring our own sheets, blankets and pillows. The owner Tom was a generous host who maintains the grounds and ensured we had everything we needed.
Oct 22, 2023 · JessicaGreat owners snd Staff! A hidden GEM!Clean, simple and very affordable.Thank you so much Tom, Sarah and Nate! Will definitely come back again and recommend to my students and congregants.Shalom :)
Jul 16, 2024 · matan peledGreat location but unfortunately, we left shortly after arriving. There were broken grills, tables and other various things littered all over the grounds. The grass hadn’t been maintained so the fire pits were overgrown which resulted in a massive amount of bugs. The bridge at the entrance looked old and we were hesitant to drive over it ( but I’m no engineer). We had heard great things about this campground, but it honestly needs a lot of work. It has a lot of potential, but I wouldn’t recommend it at this time. Definitely did not feel like this was a safe spot for my wife and me to enjoy the weekend.
