Campsites were clean, electricity and water at every site, bathrooms were spotless and heated, hot water was very hot, water pressure was great. Bathrooms are wheelchair friendly, as is the stalls. One of the two showers is as well.We saw fall foliage and loved the campground. A few round pen corrals have been placed throughout the campground making keeping horses there even easier. Open back 4 horse stocks are provided at every camp site. They are older and look a little rusty but would do the trick while camping. Wheel barrows, mucking pile areas, and shovels were provided. Buckets are not, we brought our own hay, grain, and enough buckets for water and food both. There were no water troughs that I saw provided.Trails were a lot of fun, I’d say some were intermediate thanks to a recent rain leaving lots of mud, some steep places, and some trail wash out leaving small ravine cracks in the path. The long loop looked more difficult than the Bear Creek Loop which was pretty easy. And I’d recommend shoes on your horses for rocks and gravel used on trails. But having them right there was great and we thought the adventure was fun. Our horses are good trail horses and did fine. There was a picnic table and grill and fire pit at every site and it’s far away from towns so the sky was gorgeous at night. We brought our own firewood and fire starters. The grill is not a waist high, stand alone one but instead it’s over the fire pit. Fit a cast iron pan and water kettle no prob.Area was quiet and not populated much. The road in does have a gravel stretch that is mostly one lane for 8 miles, with our rig it was fine but a huge rig would be annoying to drive into this place. Road was well maintained and no pot holes. There was one creek area with a small amount of water and a dip that we bumped a little on the dirt road.We were careful to put away all food and garbage properly each time we weren’t actively cooking. We also were very careful about our trash and making sure we left no trace when we left. This is bear country and we took it seriously. We left nothing that had any lingering food smells out, everything went back into the car and shut tight.I recommend the overlook area, the rock formations were really amazing and fun. The walk to the river view was easy (a few steps at the end make it not wheelchair friendly.) The view is gorgeous and you can see the whole area.I had a great time and would happily be back. - Leandra Collier

Bear Creek Horse Camp Introduce

For local residents in and around Strunk, Kentucky, particularly those who enjoy camping with horses, Bear Creek Horse Camp offers a premier "camping near me" experience. Located at Lee Hollow Rd, Strunk, KY 42649, USA, this campground is specifically designed to cater to the needs of both campers and their equine companions, providing a unique blend of comfortable amenities and excellent equestrian facilities. The positive reviews from fellow campers highlight the key features that make this campground a standout choice for the local community.

One of the most significant advantages of Bear Creek Horse Camp is its well-maintained infrastructure. Campers consistently praise the cleanliness of the campsites, which are equipped with both electricity and water hookups at every site. This provides a level of convenience often appreciated by those who like to have modern amenities while enjoying the outdoors. Furthermore, the bathroom facilities receive high marks for being "spotless and heated," a welcome feature, especially during cooler months. The availability of very hot water and great water pressure further enhances the comfort of the restrooms. Notably, the bathrooms and stalls are wheelchair friendly, and one of the two showers is also accessible, demonstrating a commitment to inclusivity.

For equestrian enthusiasts, Bear Creek Horse Camp truly shines. The provision of "open back 4 horse stocks" at every campsite makes it incredibly convenient to keep horses nearby. While one reviewer noted that these stocks are older and a bit rusty, they are deemed functional for the duration of a camping trip. The thoughtful inclusion of wheelbarrows, designated mucking pile areas, and shovels simplifies the task of horse care at the campsite. Campers will need to bring their own buckets for water and feed, as well as their own hay and grain. It's also important to note that water troughs were not observed by at least one reviewer, so alternative watering methods for horses may be necessary.

The trails surrounding Bear Creek Horse Camp are a major draw for riders and hikers alike. One reviewer described them as "a lot of fun," noting that some trails, particularly after recent rain, can be intermediate in difficulty due to mud, steep sections, and minor trail washouts. The Bear Creek Loop was mentioned as being relatively easy, while the longer loop appeared more challenging. Experienced riders found the trails enjoyable with good trail horses, but the recommendation to use shoes on horses due to rocks and gravel suggests that the terrain can be varied. The sheer convenience of having these trails directly accessible from the campground is a significant benefit for local horse owners looking for "camping near me" with excellent riding opportunities.

Beyond the equestrian facilities and trails, each campsite at Bear Creek Horse Camp is equipped with a picnic table, a grill, and a fire pit. The grill is designed to be used over the fire pit, accommodating cast iron pans and water kettles. The campground's location, far from towns, results in "gorgeous" night skies, perfect for stargazing. Campers are advised to bring their own firewood and fire starters. The quiet and unpopulated nature of the area contributes to a peaceful camping experience.

Access to the campground involves an 8-mile stretch of mostly one-lane gravel road. While one reviewer with a standard rig found it manageable, they cautioned that very large vehicles might find it annoying. The road is reported to be well-maintained with no potholes. There is a creek crossing with a small amount of water and a dip, which caused a slight bump for one reviewer. Local campers with larger RVs or trailers should consider this road condition when planning their visit.

Wildlife awareness is crucial at Bear Creek Horse Camp, as it is located in bear country. Reviewers emphasized the importance of proper food and garbage storage to avoid attracting bears. This responsible approach to camping ensures the safety of both humans and wildlife. The campground encourages a "leave no trace" ethic.

The area surrounding the campground offers additional attractions. The overlook area with "amazing and fun" rock formations is highly recommended. The walk to the river view is described as easy, although a few steps at the end make it not wheelchair friendly. The river view itself is reported to be "gorgeous" and offers a panoramic perspective of the area.

While the overwhelming feedback is positive, one reviewer suggested an improvement for the horse areas, noting that the concrete can be hard on horses' hooves. They recommended the addition of rubber mats or replacing the metal structures with softer panels. This feedback indicates an ongoing opportunity for the campground to further enhance its already excellent equestrian facilities.

Considering the platform category "camping near me," Bear Creek Horse Camp provides a specialized and highly regarded option for local horse owners and camping enthusiasts. The combination of clean and well-equipped campsites with top-notch equestrian amenities and access to scenic trails makes it a unique destination within the region. The positive reviews consistently highlight the cleanliness, the thoughtful provisions for horses, and the beauty of the surrounding environment.
