Great Meadows Campground

Rock Creek-Fireroad 137 Rd, Stearns, KY 42647, USA

4.0
During the hot summer months, this is a nice place for a picnic, camping trip, nature visit, or a cool dip in the frigid waters of rock creek. The shelter house is situated on the creek with picnic tables, paved walking path, grills, and restrooms nearby. A short drive past the shelter house you will find 2 campgrounds. The first campground is called "Deer Loop". Here you will find gravel campsites with fire pits, picnic tables, lanter poles, and plenty of shade from the sun. The second campground is "Racoon Loop". Here you will find all of the amenities as Deer Loop with the added backdrop of rock creek flowing beside the campsites. Water and electricity is not provided at either campground. Besides the designated campgrounds, you also have a few options for some more private primitive camping. Just look for the gravel pulloffs. Be aware of the narrow gravel road leading to these areas and watch out for those crazy drivers. - Adam

The journey to Great Meadows Campground itself is part of the charm, with scenic overlooks along the road offering glimpses of the natural beauty that awaits. As you arrive, you'll find a well-maintained shelter house situated right by the creek. This central area serves as a hub for day visitors and campers alike, providing essential amenities for a comfortable outing. Here, you can enjoy a delightful picnic at one of the many tables, utilize the convenient grills for a barbecue, and take advantage of the nearby restrooms. A paved walking path meanders around the shelter house, perfect for a leisurely stroll and enjoying the picturesque surroundings.

A short drive past the shelter house unveils the two main campgrounds within Great Meadows: Deer Loop and Racoon Loop. Both campgrounds are thoughtfully equipped to provide a comfortable and enjoyable camping experience amidst the natural beauty of Kentucky. Deer Loop offers gravel campsites that are generously shaded, providing a welcome respite during the warmer months. Each site is equipped with a fire pit, ideal for cozy campfires and outdoor cooking, as well as a picnic table for convenient meal preparation and gathering. Lantern poles are also provided at each campsite, offering a practical solution for lighting up your evenings under the stars.

Racoon Loop, the second campground, mirrors the amenities of Deer Loop, offering gravel campsites with fire pits, picnic tables, and lantern poles. However, Racoon Loop boasts a unique and highly desirable feature: the gentle flow of Rock Creek alongside the campsites. Imagine falling asleep to the soothing sounds of the creek and waking up to the tranquil views of the water. This proximity to the creek enhances the camping experience, offering opportunities for relaxation and a deeper connection with the natural environment. It's important to note that neither Deer Loop nor Racoon Loop provides water or electricity hookups at the individual campsites, allowing for a more traditional and immersive camping experience.

For those seeking a more secluded and adventurous camping experience, Great Meadows Campground also offers options for primitive camping. Scattered along the area are several gravel pull-offs, providing more private and dispersed camping spots. These areas allow you to truly immerse yourself in the natural surroundings and enjoy a greater sense of solitude. However, it's crucial to exercise caution when accessing these primitive sites, as the gravel roads leading to them can be narrow. Additionally, be mindful of other vehicles on these roads to ensure everyone's safety.
