For local adventurers seeking a truly special and somewhat secluded "camping near me" experience, Beaver Lakes Campground, located at 73 Columbia Gas Rd, Calvin, WV 26660, USA, comes highly recommended by those fortunate enough to have discovered it. While it might be a little off the beaten path, as noted by a delighted reviewer, the rewards of finding this campground seem to far outweigh the initial challenge of locating it. If you're yearning for a sprawling property to explore, diverse camping options, and a host who goes above and beyond, Beaver Lakes Campground could be your next treasured local escape.
One enthusiastic guest described the host as "wonderful" and the property as "huge" with ample space for exploration. This suggests that Beaver Lakes Campground is not your typical cramped camping area but rather an extensive natural expanse offering a sense of freedom and adventure. The variety of accommodation options caters to different preferences and needs, including cabins for those seeking more comfort, tent sites for traditional campers, and RV sites for those traveling with their own mobile homes. The availability of group and even remote camping areas further highlights the campground's ability to accommodate various types of camping experiences, from family gatherings to more solitary retreats.
The same reviewer praised the host for being "very helpful," often checking in on guests and providing valuable recommendations for local exploring. This personal touch can significantly enhance a camping trip, making visitors feel welcomed and well-cared for. It suggests that the management of Beaver Lakes Campground is dedicated to ensuring a positive and memorable experience for their guests, going beyond simply providing a campsite.
Another glowing review echoes the sentiment of discovering a "gem of a campground," one so special that the reviewer was initially hesitant to share its existence, wanting to keep it a secret. This speaks volumes about the unique appeal and quality of Beaver Lakes Campground. The fact that the campground is described as "difficult to find thank goodness" hints at its secluded nature, suggesting a peaceful and less crowded environment for those who make the journey.
The reviewer who stayed in what they referred to as "level 2" noted the presence of many sections within the campground, which allows for a sense of spaciousness even when there are other campers. This layout ensures that everyone is spread out, contributing to a more tranquil and private experience. The host, John, is specifically mentioned as "exceptionally kind," and his gesture of pointing out free firewood (though not guaranteed) underscores the welcoming and helpful atmosphere of the campground.
Beaver Lakes Campground caters to different types of campers with its various levels suitable for RVs and "fantastic high mountain spots for tents." This diversity in terrain and campsite options allows visitors to choose a setting that best suits their equipment and preferences, whether they prefer the convenience of an RV hookup or the more rustic experience of a mountaintop tent site with potentially stunning views.
Nature lovers will appreciate the presence of "quite a few deer" on the extensive property, indicating a healthy local wildlife population. Importantly, hunting is not allowed, ensuring a safe and peaceful environment for both campers and animals. For those who enjoy fishing, Beaver Lakes Campground offers catch and release fishing, providing a relaxing activity without impacting the local ecosystem.
Convenience is also a factor, with gas and simple groceries located just 100 yards from the campground entrance. For more extensive shopping needs, a larger store is about 5 miles away, striking a good balance between seclusion and accessibility to essential supplies. The reviewer also noted good cell service with T-Mobile (4 bars), which can be important for staying connected or in case of emergencies, while still allowing for a break from the digital world if desired.
The price is simply listed as "$," suggesting that Beaver Lakes Campground offers good value for the experience it provides, especially considering the extensive property, diverse camping options, and the positive interactions with the host. However, to get the most accurate and up-to-date pricing information, it is essential to contact the campground directly.

Beaver Lakes Campground Reviews
Wonderful host, huge property to explore. Cabin, tent or RV sites, even group or remote. Very helpful host, checked on us often and gave great recommendations for local exploring.
Oct 05, 2024 · Carol MitchellA little late in sharing this gem of a campground. Usually we never tell anyone about a place like this but I just have too.The campground is difficult to find thank goodness but it’s worth it. I stayed up in all refer to it as level 2. There are many sections so it could be crowded yet everyone is spread out. John is exceptionally kind and that goes a long way. He had been clearing brush and pointed out that the wood was free. Don’t expect that but it was a warm change. There are several levels for RV’s and fantastic high mountain spots for tents. Also their are quite a few deer, hunting is not allowed on the extensive property. Fishing is catch and release, gas and simple groceries are 100 yards from the entrance, a larger store is about 5 miles away. Cell (T-Mobile) was 4 bars. Price $.Now you’ll understand why we don’t tell people about places like this.
Nov 06, 2022 · Chuck FitzpatrickI stayed at this campground in May 2021 on a kayaking trip to the Gauley River. The campground was beautiful, large, and quiet and the owner provided top notch customer service! He was very communicative and waited up extremely late until we arrived so he could personally show us to our campsite. I was glad he did because it was a long drive through the campground in the dark and I might not have found the way to the right place without him. The tent camping area is serene, on top of a plateau with an amazing view. It was very quiet, and the area available for tent camping was quite large. There was only an outhouse but it didn't even smell bad! There was water available in the primitive camping area. The owner talked about plans for adding a shower house in the future. I will definitely be staying here again next time I am in the area. It is clear the owner cares about campers having a positive experience.
Feb 24, 2022 · Mary SpikowskiThis is an amazing campground where you will find organic camping location with the luxury of full hookups. John is an awesome host and made sure we had everything to our liking for our stay. He even let us explore his vast property to enjoy views and serenity. This campground is away from rush and about half and hour away from New River Gorge National Park and several other places to hike and enjoy the streams of Birch River etc. Will definitely come back again when visiting the area or passing by which we do atleast once a year.
May 31, 2021 · Raheel RaoThe entire experience with John was incredible. He is a fantastic host that goes above and beyond anything we expected. It started when we pulled off the scenic road onto the property and John welcomed us and gave us the grand tour (after sharing some stories about his family and great pictures of some fish). We decided to take our vintage airstream to a remote site that had the most spectacular view of the valley below and mountains all around us. Our son and his wife pitched a tent near the fire pit that was well stocked. John checked in on us, brought more wood, a modem-day fire starter, as well as a bag of potatoes - which we sliced up and cooked on the open fire to add to our steaks we brought for our first meal in this beautiful location. We explored a part of the property on our hike the next morning and saw deer, rabbits, and a speculator amount of fall colors before heading out to the Gauley River area for more site seeing. There had been some rain during the night and the road from our site was a little slippery coming down the hill. We stopped at the house when we returned and John said the weather forecast was for more rain, but would make sure to bring his tractor out in the morning before we left to make sure the road was in good shape for us. I cannot express how great it was for John to come out and make sure we could safely get down the hill. This exemplifies our experience with John and is also the reason we will be coming back.
