Benbow SRA Campground Introduce
Benbow SRA Campground, located at Fish Crossing Ln, Garberville, CA 95542, USA, is a well-known public camping destination situated within the beautiful Benbow State Recreation Area. As a managed unit of California State Parks, it offers a distinct camping experience for those searching "Camping Near Me" in the heart of Northern California's famous Redwood Coast. Its prime location on the South Fork Eel River and close proximity to the Avenue of the Giants make it a highly desirable spot for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts. For inquiries and reservations, you can contact the park directly at (707) 923-3238 or +1 707-923-3238.
Benbow SRA Campground's environment is characterized by a compelling blend of natural beauty and accessibility. It is set directly on the banks of the South Fork Eel River, offering "great beach access" to a popular swimming spot. The surrounding landscape is dominated by the majestic redwood trees, which are a hallmark of this region of Northern California. The campground itself is generally "in an open grassy area with a mix of sun and shade trees," providing a pleasant setting for campers.
A significant aspect of the campground's environment, as noted by customer reviews, is its "very close to highway 101 and very near a bridge." This proximity means that "80% of the campground is going to be affected by direct traffic noise," and cars going over the bridge can be heard "all night long." While some campers find that the noise fades once asleep, it's a crucial consideration for those sensitive to ambient sound. The "loop closest to the water is a little lower and buffered from most of the traffic noise," suggesting that site selection can influence the noise level. Despite the traffic noise, the location provides quick and easy access to the main artery through the Redwoods.
The Benbow State Recreation Area, encompassing the campground, is part of a larger ecological system that includes the Eel River, a designated National Wild and Scenic River. This offers opportunities for swimming, fishing, and kayaking. The campground is also an excellent base for exploring the "Avenue of the Giants," a scenic alternative to Highway 101 that winds through ancient groves of towering old-growth redwoods. This proximity allows visitors to easily access hiking trails, scenic viewpoints, and interpretive centers within the redwood forests. The presence of wildlife is common in such natural settings, and visitors should always be aware of local fauna.
Benbow SRA Campground provides a range of amenities and services typical of a California State Park campground, designed to support both tent and RV camping. The campground features 75 campsites, generally accommodating both RVs and tents.
- Campsites:
- Site Types: The campground offers a mix of "Standard, Electrical/Water, and Primitive" sites. Standard sites accommodate RVs up to 35 feet, while Electrical/Water sites can take RVs up to 40 feet.
- Hookups: Partial hookups (electric and water) are available at some sites, while others are dry camping sites. Each site typically includes a picnic table and a fire pit or ring.
- Site Layout: Campsites are described as "good sized," providing adequate space for campers. Reviewers mentioned staying in "campsite 6," which is "located right at the front," reinforcing the idea of individually designated sites.
- Restrooms and Showers: The campground is equipped with restrooms and coin-operated hot showers. While one review noted that "The toilets backed up and worked slow" during a busy weekend, the general sentiment was "grateful to even have them," indicating that these facilities are a valued amenity. The showers are a key convenience, especially for those who spend time swimming or hiking.
- Beach Access: The campground offers "great beach access" to the Eel River, providing a natural swimming hole. This is a significant draw, especially during warmer months.
- Playground: A "playground for younger kids" is available, making the campground family-friendly and providing entertainment for children.
- Camp Host: A camp host is typically present to assist campers and provide information.
- Potable Water: Potable water is generally available throughout the campground, with water spigots located within reasonable proximity to sites.
- Dump Station: A dump station is provided for RVs, allowing for convenient waste disposal.
- Firewood: Firewood is often available for purchase from the camp host or local vendors.
- Reservations: Campsites at Benbow SRA are reservable through ReserveCalifornia.com, especially advisable for peak seasons like "Memorial weekend," when the campground can be "packed to the fullest." While the campground might be "packed," a review still indicated "Great people all around in the camp ground!"
- Pet Policy: Pets are generally permitted in California State Parks campgrounds but must be on a leash no longer than six feet and attended at all times. They are typically not allowed on trails, in buildings, or on beaches.
Benbow SRA Campground's promotional appeal within the "Camping Near Me" category lies in its prime location, accessibility to the Eel River, and its status as a California State Park, which often implies a certain standard of facility and natural preservation.
- Riverfront Recreation: The direct access to the Eel River for swimming, fishing, and kayaking is a major draw, especially for water-loving families and individuals. The "great beach access" is a significant selling point.
- Redwood Exploration: Its proximity to the Avenue of the Giants makes it an ideal base for exploring the world-famous redwood forests, appealing to nature enthusiasts, hikers, and sightseers.
- Family-Friendly Environment: The presence of a playground, river access, and a generally welcoming atmosphere makes it suitable for families with children. The review noting "a ton of kids they had a bike gang of kids to play with" emphasizes this family appeal.
- RV and Tent Options: The availability of partial hookup RV sites and tent sites caters to a broad range of camping preferences.
- California State Parks Standard: Being part of the State Parks system suggests a level of maintenance and adherence to regulations, providing a degree of reliability for campers.
However, it's important to address the potential challenges honestly in promotional materials. The issue of highway and bridge noise is a consistent point in reviews, and acknowledging this allows campers to make informed decisions. While one reviewer mentioned rangers being "here to inform not enforce" regarding noise, suggesting a relaxed approach that could lead to late-night disturbances, this might be a specific instance and not representative of all park operations. Generally, State Parks do enforce quiet hours.
In conclusion, Benbow SRA Campground in Garberville, CA, offers a valuable "Camping Near Me" experience for those seeking a riverfront camping adventure amidst the stunning Redwoods. With its mix of partial hookup and dry sites, essential amenities like restrooms and showers, and direct access to the Eel River and the Avenue of the Giants, it provides a solid base for outdoor recreation. While potential traffic noise is a consideration, its natural beauty, family-friendly atmosphere, and proximity to iconic California attractions make it a popular choice for campers looking to immerse themselves in the unique environment of the Redwood Coast.

Benbow SRA Campground Reviews
We had a wonderful time at this campsite. It was memorial weekend 2021 and was packed to the fullest. There are restrooms and showers. The toilets backed up and worked slow but we were all grateful to even have them. We stayed in campsite 6. It’s located right at the front. The traffic noise once i was asleep wasn’t a problem. We did have a crying baby but that’s life no judgement from this mama of 3. We enjoyed our little site! There were a ton of kids they had a bike gang of kids to play with. Great people all around in the camp ground!
Jun 06, 2021 · Candace ThomasNice facilities great beach access but very close to highway 101 and very near a bridge 80% of the campground is going to be affected by direct traffic noise the loop closest to the water is a little lower and buffered from most of the traffic noise but you can still hear the cars going over the bridge, all night long. The rangers here are, in their own words " here to inform not enforce " which pretty much means do whatever you want go ahead and play your loud music with subwoofers until 2:00 or 3:00 a.m. no problem. Wear masks don't wear masks put 30 people in a campsite whatever you want.

Nov 23, 2021 · Ray Moondoe (MoonCrab Tarot)I did not get to see the campground, but shared the river with the campers for a day.So, I can vouch for a great place to swim, grill and picnic. The better shade was on my side of the river.
