Appalachian Mountain Club Echo Lake Camp Introduce
Looking for an exceptional "camping near me" experience that combines the beauty of Acadia National Park with the convenience of an all-inclusive stay? For local individuals and families seeking an unforgettable and affordable getaway in Maine, the Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC) Echo Lake Camp offers a unique opportunity to immerse yourselves in nature without the typical hassles of camping. Praised as one of the most affordable high-quality family camps in the Northeast by the Boston Globe, this charming and rustic camp, owned by the esteemed Appalachian Mountain Club, is remarkably located *inside* Acadia National Park itself.
Imagine a vacation where your lodging, abundant and excellent family-style meals (three times a day!), and a variety of engaging activities are all included in one incredibly reasonable price. At AMC Echo Lake Camp, this dream becomes a reality. Forget about the complexities of meal planning, grocery shopping, and coordinating activities. Here, you can simply relax and focus on enjoying the stunning surroundings and the camaraderie of fellow nature enthusiasts. The camp provides hot showers and flush toilets, adding a level of comfort often absent in traditional campgrounds. Accommodation is in canvas wall tents equipped with deck flooring, offering a rustic yet comfortable shelter for your stay.
The heart of the camp revolves around community and shared experiences. The dining hall and library, often featuring roaring fires, provide cozy spaces to gather and connect. A recreation hall with a busy ping pong table offers friendly competition, while a volleyball court provides an opportunity for outdoor fun. This vibrant community atmosphere is a significant feature of AMC Echo Lake Camp, fostering connections and creating lasting memories.
What truly sets this camp apart is the incredible value it offers. For a week-long stay (Saturday to Saturday), the all-inclusive rate (including all meals, lodging, and activities) is remarkably affordable at $781. Even better, Appalachian Mountain Club members receive a discounted rate of $707. Families with children will find it even more appealing, with AMC member rates for children at just $461 and for juniors at $603. This exceptional pricing for a full-service experience within a top-rated National Park makes AMC Echo Lake Camp an unparalleled option for a budget-conscious yet enriching family vacation.
Steeped in history, this charming and rustic camp has been welcoming guests since the 1920s. It is uniquely run by an all-volunteer executive committee, a testament to the passion and dedication of the AMC community. The hike and activity leaders are also experienced and certified volunteers, often with wilderness-medical training. This volunteer-driven model allows the full-time paid staff to maintain this "jewel of Acadia" without exorbitant costs, passing the savings on to guests.
For those eager to explore the natural wonders of Acadia, AMC Echo Lake Camp offers a fantastic program of daily guided hikes. Each day, several hikes are available to choose from, catering to various fitness levels and interests. These hikes are led by experienced volunteer leaders who are also wilderness-medical certified, ensuring both safety and insightful guidance as you discover the park's spectacular trails and vistas.
Echo Lake itself is a pristine, clear, cold, and deep lake that serves as a central hub for aquatic activities. Guests don't need to bring their own boats, as the camp boasts a fleet of kayaks, canoes, sailboats, and stand-up paddleboards (SUPs) available for use. Whether you're looking for a refreshing swim, a leisurely paddle, or simply to soak up the sun by the water, Echo Lake provides ample opportunities for enjoyment. For those who prefer to admire the scenery from a distance, comfortable Adirondack chairs on the deck offer gorgeous views and a perfect spot for relaxation.
Food is another highlight of the AMC Echo Lake Camp experience. Professional chef Tina Lunt has been the camp chef for many years, and her creative, fresh, family-style cuisine has nourished countless hikers exploring Acadia. Her culinary skills are so renowned that she was even featured in AMC's Outdoor magazine. Guests can expect delicious and satisfying meals that cater to a range of tastes and dietary needs within a family-style setting, fostering a sense of community around the table.
While the provided information is from 2019, the enduring reputation and unique offerings of AMC Echo Lake Camp suggest its continued appeal. For those considering a visit, it's advisable to check the Appalachian Mountain Club website for current availability and rates for the upcoming season. The glowing testimonials from long-time visitors, including one who has been returning for over 40 years and a first-time guest who described the camp as "magical," speak volumes about the lasting appeal of this special place.
To make the most of your stay, consider the helpful tips from a seasoned camper: while the camp provides blankets, sheets, and pillows, those who are particular about bedding might want to bring their own extra blanket or mattress topper for added comfort. Flashlights are essential for navigating the camp at night, and children often enjoy playing flashlight tag. The camp fosters a strong sense of community, so bringing musical instruments, jokes, or a favorite poem to share at the Friday night talent show is encouraged. While games are available, you're also welcome to bring your own group games to share and connect with fellow campers. AMC Echo Lake Camp is truly a place where you're likely to make new friends and create cherished memories.

This is without a doubt one of the best places to spend a week visiting a top rated National Park. AMC Echo Lake is welcoming of individuals and families, all meals are prepared and there are led hikes daily.
Aug 09, 2024 · Dr.Tim HeathEcho Lake camp has been reviewed in the Boston Globe as one of the most affordable high quality family camps in the Northeast. This camp is owned by the Appalachian Mountain Club, and is actually INSIDE of Acadia National Park. That's right--it's INSIDE the park. You'd think that a full service camp (think abundant and excellent family-style meals 3 times per day, hot showers, flush toilets, canvas wall tents with deck flooring, a dining hall and library with roaring fires, a rec hall with a busy ping pong table, a volleyball court...) would be ridiculously expensive, but no. All inclusive (all meals/lodging/activities) for one week Saturday to Saturday is $781, or if you are an Appalachian Mountain Club member, it is $707. AMC member rates for children ($461) and juniors ($603) are even less! The charming and rustic camp has been around since the 1920's and is run by an all-volunteer executive committee. The hike and activity leaders are also experienced and certified volunteers, which allows the full time paid staff to operate this jewel of Acadia that won't break your family's bank. Each day there are several hikes to choose from. Each one is led by experienced, wilderness-medical certified hike leaders. Echo Lake itself is a clear, cold, deep lake for swimming, sunning and boating--no need to bring your own boat! The camp has a fleet.of kayaks, canoes, sailboats and SUP's. Gorgeous views from the nap-inducing Adirondack chairs on the deck mean you can also enjoy the lake from afar. The food is wonderful. Professional chef Tina Lunt has been the camp chef for years and her creative, fresh, family style cuisine has nourished thousands of hiker miles through spectacular Acadia National Park. Her food is so good that there was an article written about her in AMC's Outdoor magazine. There's still space available for the summer of 2019! I have been going to this camp on and off for the past 40 years. I thought the magic was because this place is like home for me, but I brought a friend last summer and she said "How come we've never heard of this place? It really IS magical."Tips: They have blankets, sheets and pillows for the beds that are in each tent. However, I am particular about my bedding so I bring a fluffy blanket and a mattress topper! My kids like to bring their sleeping bags and use the cozy camp fleece blankets on top when it gets extra chilly.Flashlights: essential for getting to and fro in camp at night, AND for your kids: they can play flashlight tag with new friends!Community: Bring your musical instruments, jokes or a favorite poem for the talent show on Friday night! There are plenty of games to play there, but you can always bring your favorite group game to share, too! This is a place where you'll make new friends.
