Big Eddy Campground

Golden Rd, Millinocket, ME 04462, USA

4.0
This is remote and the roads are logging roads. Know your route before you embark on your trip. The folks at Big Eddy Campground are first class. The camp fees they charge are well worth it especially a hot shower! Sarah was very nice and willing to help me with all questions. I stocked up the fly library! The fishing was a little tough because of the warm water IMHO.I was there in September 27-29 and stayed in the Chesuncook Cabin and loved it!I drove a Subaru Legacy on the long road out from the West to pick up the Golden Rd east. Yes I had to go slow and yes the travel time was off the charts, but hey I was on vacation lol... - Sonder Blogger

Big Eddy Campground Introduce

For our local Maine community seeking "camping near me" with a touch of the wild, Big Eddy Campground, located on Golden Road in Millinocket, presents an intriguing option. Based on customer reviews, this campground offers a unique experience characterized by its somewhat remote location, friendly service, and a setting split by a river. Whether you're looking for a traditional campsite or the comfort of a cabin, Big Eddy Campground seems to cater to various preferences. Let's delve into the details shared by those who have stayed there.

Environment and Ambiance:

Big Eddy Campground is described as "remote," and access involves traveling on "logging roads," so it's important for potential visitors to "know your route" beforehand. This remoteness suggests a more secluded and natural environment, away from the hustle and bustle. The campground is uniquely "split on either side of the river," offering different ambiences depending on which side you choose. One side is described as "disconnected from the main office," considered the "wild side," and noted to be "much quieter." This appeals to those seeking a more rustic and peaceful camping experience. The presence of a river suggests opportunities for enjoying the water, although one reviewer noted that "fishing was a little tough because of the warm water" during their visit. Despite this, the riverside location likely contributes to the overall natural beauty of the campground. Be aware that the "wild side" might also come with encounters with local wildlife, as one guest mentioned raccoons trying to get into their snacks. Overall, the environment seems to be one of natural beauty and relative tranquility, with a choice between a more communal and a more isolated camping experience.

Services and Features:

Despite its remote location, Big Eddy Campground offers valuable amenities. One of the highlights mentioned by a reviewer is the availability of "hot showers," which are considered well worth the camp fees. The facilities are also described as "clean," which is always a significant plus for campers. The employees are consistently praised as "very helpful and friendly," with specific mention of "Sarah" being "very nice and willing to help with all questions." This suggests a welcoming and supportive atmosphere. The campground offers various accommodation options, including campsites and at least one cabin, the "Chesuncook Cabin," which one guest "loved." For those interested in fishing, there might even be opportunities to "stock up the fly library," suggesting some level of provision for anglers. The fact that the camp fees are considered "well worth it" indicates that the services and facilities provided are valued by the guests.

Potential Activities and Local Attractions:

Given its location in Millinocket, Maine, and the presence of a river, Big Eddy Campground likely offers access to various outdoor activities. Fishing is one obvious possibility, although water temperature can be a factor at certain times. The remoteness suggests opportunities for hiking and exploring the surrounding natural areas, although specific trails aren't mentioned in the reviews. The proximity to the Golden Road, a significant logging road, might offer scenic drives, but as noted, travel can be slow. The "wild side" of the campground, being quieter and more disconnected, might be particularly appealing for nature observation and a more immersive wilderness experience. While Baxter State Park is also located near Millinocket, the reviews don't explicitly mention the proximity of Big Eddy Campground to it, unlike the review for Wilderness Edge Campground.
