Big Sandy Campground Introduce
For local users searching for "camping near me" in the Swanton, Ohio area, Big Sandy Campground, located at 4035 S Berkey Southern Rd, presents itself as an option. However, it is crucial for potential visitors to be aware of recent feedback from campers, which raises significant concerns about the campground's facilities, management, and overall atmosphere. This introduction aims to provide an objective overview based on the available review information to help local users make informed decisions.
A Potentially Unpleasant Setting: The Environment
While one review mentions staying in the tent area with "plenty of space overlooking a pond," other aspects of the environment described in the feedback are far less positive. One camper explicitly states that "the swimming pond was horrible," suggesting that this water feature may not be suitable for recreational use. This could be a significant disappointment for visitors hoping for water-based activities within the campground itself.
Furthermore, concerns are raised about the general maintenance of the grounds. The review notes that "the grass was super long in most spots and the pot holes are bad." Overgrown grass can detract from the aesthetic appeal of the campground and potentially create issues with insects or accessibility. Poorly maintained roads with potholes can be particularly problematic for vehicles, including RVs and trailers, and can make navigating the campground difficult and potentially damaging.
The mention of the tent area overlooking a pond does suggest that some campsites may offer pleasant views and ample space. However, the negative comments regarding the swimming pond and overall ground maintenance indicate that the environment may be inconsistent and that certain areas of the campground may be poorly maintained.
Significant Deficiencies in Services: Services
The reviews paint a concerning picture regarding the services and facilities at Big Sandy Campground. One of the most alarming aspects is the description of the "bathrooms" as "really disgusting." This is a fundamental amenity for any campground, and such strong negative feedback suggests serious issues with cleanliness and maintenance. The specific details provided – "the one stall had a SMALL shower curtain for the door and the other stalls don’t even have locks on them anymore" – further illustrate the severely inadequate condition of these facilities. The lack of privacy and security in the restrooms is a significant concern for any camper.
Another mentioned service, the "playground," is described as "falling apart." This indicates a lack of maintenance and potential safety hazards for children who might use the play area. For families with young children, the condition of the playground is often a key factor in choosing a campground, and the description provided suggests that the facilities at Big Sandy Campground are substandard.
The review also mentions that the "bathrooms weren't convenient" for the tent area. This suggests a potentially significant distance between the tent camping sites and the restroom facilities, which can be inconvenient, especially during inclement weather or at night.
The interaction with the "old man" (presumably the owner or manager) as described in one review raises serious concerns about customer service and management practices. The aggressive and threatening behavior towards campers regarding their dogs, including cursing, screaming, and threats to shoot the animals, is completely unacceptable and creates a hostile environment for guests. The inconsistent enforcement of rules, as highlighted by the different treatment of campers with dogs during check-in, further underscores a lack of professionalism and fairness.
The initial interaction at check-in, where a camper was warned about immediate eviction if their dog barked, also suggests a potentially unreasonable and unwelcoming attitude towards pet owners. This, coupled with the later aggressive confrontation, strongly indicates that Big Sandy Campground may not be a suitable choice for those traveling with dogs.
Serious Drawbacks: Features
Based on the recent reviews, the features of Big Sandy Campground appear to be significantly lacking or poorly maintained. The "swimming pond" is described as "horrible," negating its potential as a recreational feature. The "playground is falling apart," rendering it unusable or unsafe for children.
The tent area offering "plenty of space overlooking a pond" could be considered a positive feature for those specifically seeking a tent site with a view. However, this is overshadowed by the inconvenience of the bathroom location for tent campers.
The proximity to a state park (within five miles or so) is mentioned as a potential advantage, offering access to additional recreational opportunities outside of the campground itself. However, this does not compensate for the deficiencies within Big Sandy Campground.
The most significant negative feature highlighted in the reviews is the behavior of the management, described as aggressive, confrontational, and inconsistent. This creates a hostile and unwelcoming atmosphere that would likely detract from any potential positive aspects of the campground.
The strong recommendations against staying at Big Sandy Campground if you have kids or dogs further emphasize the negative features and the overall unsuitable environment for these demographics.
Lack of Promotional Information: Promotional Information
The provided information does not include any promotional details for Big Sandy Campground. Given the overwhelmingly negative recent feedback, it is possible that the campground is not currently actively promoting itself or may be undergoing internal issues that are impacting the guest experience.
Potential local users are advised to exercise extreme caution and seek additional, more recent information from various online platforms before considering a stay at Big Sandy Campground. It would also be prudent to inquire directly about the current condition of the facilities, the campground's policies regarding pets and children, and the management's approach to guest relations.
The absence of any positive promotional messaging, coupled with the strongly negative reviews, serves as a significant warning sign for prospective campers.
A Word of Caution for Local Campers: In Conclusion
For local users searching for "camping near me" in the Swanton, OH area, the recent reviews for Big Sandy Campground paint a concerning picture. While the campground offers a location at 4035 S Berkey Southern Rd, the feedback highlights significant issues with the cleanliness and maintenance of the bathrooms, the dilapidated state of the playground, and potentially problematic management behavior, particularly regarding pets and interactions with guests. The "horrible" swimming pond and the inconvenience of bathroom access for the tent area further detract from the overall appeal. Based on this recent feedback, potential campers, especially those with children or pets, are strongly advised to exercise caution and thoroughly investigate current conditions and alternative camping options in the area before making a reservation at Big Sandy Campground.

Big Sandy Campground Reviews
This place deserves 0 stars to be honest. This place is a joke. I went on Friday and paid for 4 nights and he asked me if I had any dogs. I told him no and he said “Good, because if they bark, you’re out of here.” There was a guy paying in front of me, he asked him the same question and didn’t even say anything about the dog that was staying with them. The swimming pond was horrible, playground is falling apart, bathrooms are really disgusting.. the one stall had a SMALL shower curtain for the door and the other stalls don’t even have locks on them anymore. The grass was super long in most spots and the pot holes are bad.Fast forward to Monday evening and the old man comes out of nowhere with no warning on his gator and goes off on my aunt and uncle about their dogs. Yes the dogs bark, but usually at cars that would go by slow or other dogs/people they didn’t know. (they were in a fenced area or in the camper) He started cussing and screaming, threatening to shoot their dogs. Goes on about how my uncle is foul mouthed, yet my uncle didn’t even say anything, it was all the old man. My kids were right there and so were my little cousins. This place is definitely not dog or kid friendly.WOULD NOT RECOMMEND IF YOU HAVE KIDS OR DOGS!!

Oct 31, 2024 · Jill BealsIf you don't go over 5 miles an hour no problem if you get into it with eddy you just tell him to go f himself.camp for a long time as an 18 year old got kicked out many times it's like a Land of the Lost alcoholics.just carrying empty 5th with tea in it you'll get along fine and remember the permanent campers are all narcs nothing better to do especially if you go over 5 miles an hour. so if you're a a drunk for the weekend it's a great place to be.
Jul 29, 2024 · TamA RaahhIf I could give a zero I would. The old guy that runs this place is drunk half the time and belligerent. We paid for 7 nights and on day 3 he comes up cussing about my dogs that were barking at him because he was being a threat. Then he threatened to shoot my dogs. He said we had to leave and I said if he gives me my money back. He cheated me out of 50 bucks. This campground is unkept grass is not cut, water for swimming is dirty with leaches. No other campers came the whole time we were there and now I know why.
Jul 30, 2024 · Paula LewinskiThe owners are horrible and rude. NOT kid friendly. NOT animal friends. Owner threatened to shoot my parents dogs (they were in a fenced in area or in the camper the whole time.) They do not mow their grass areas, swimming area is atrocious, playground is falling apart, concrete is coming up in spots and a trip hazard and their bathrooms are disgusting. In women's room doors have no locks and 1 is just a shower curtain that does NOT cover the stall when in use. Id NEVER recommend any friends, family or strangers to go here.
